Subject: Obit: Risteard MacGabhann - Irish educator From: Felipa Date: 07 May 23 - 07:34 PM I am one of a great number of people who are indebted to Risteard (Dicky) MacGabhann for his help in many areas of the arts and education in the Derry area, N. Ireland. Risteard, who died on 7 May 2023, recently had a public launch of his Irish language song collection "Claisceadal Cois Baile" published Dec 2022 by Colmcille Press. This book is the culmination of several years of weekly "claisceadal" song learning sessions tutored by Risteard. Risteard also used to play accordian at local sessions and to sing with a choir at an Irish language mass. When the annual Oireachtas na Gaeilge festival was held in Derry in 2006, Risteard was chosen as Uachtaran (president). He was a very learned man, and was generous with sharing his knowledge. https://www.derryjournal.com/heritage-and-retro/heritage/derry-musician-risteard-mac-gabhann-releases-great-irish-songbook-claisceadal-cois-baile-4039325 https://www.irishnews.com/news/northernirelandnews/2022/12/12/news/labour_of_love_leads_to_unique_gaelic_song_collection-2938503/ interview Risteard did on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta a few weeks ago - there is a hoarseness in Risteard's voice due to his illness:https://www.rte.ie/radio/rnag/clips/22241582/ |
