A PAIR OF B.V.D.'s
(Mrs. Kenneth Larson)

She had a --she had a --
She had a pair of B.V.D.'s;
She had a -- she had a --
She had a pair o B.V.D's;
She wore them in the summer,
She wore them in the fall;
But the last time I saw her,
She didn't wear them at al!
She had a -- she had a --
She had a pair of B.V.D.'s!

From Songs and Ballads: Folk Material and Old Favorites, Collected by [James] Kenneth Larson in McCammon, Idaho. Undated [c1933], typescript. Tune not indicated. But other examples use Ja-da as the tune.

Ja-da Ja-da
Ja-da ja-da,
ja-da-ja-da-jing-jing-jing
Ja-da Ja-da
Ja-da ja-da,
ja-da-ja-da-jing-jing-jing

Now that's a sexy melody
It so southing and appealing to me
Ja-da Ja-da
ja-da-ja-da-jing-jing-jing

Matches, matches
M-A-T-C-H-E-S
Matches, matches
M-A-T-C-H-E-S
Strike them on the windows
You strike them on the glass
I even met a girl that
Could strike them on her ankles
Matches, matches
M-A-T-C-H-E-S

She had them
She had them
She had a pair of BVD's
She wore them
She wore them
She wore them down below her knees
Now she wore them in winter
She wore in the fall
When she ran around Hollywood
She didn't wear them at all

Transcribed from the LP CENSORED with Billy Devroe and the Devil-aires, undated [1958].

Shimmy, shimmy
Shimmy in your BVDs...
You wear 'em in the springtime
And you wear 'em in the fall,
You wear 'em in the winter
If you wear 'em at all...

I have always wondered what BVD's are.
Answers on a postcard please.

Roger, I'm fresh out of postcards, but I do have access to Google. Wikipedia says, "BVD is a brand of men's underwear, which are commonly referred to as "BVDs". The brand was founded in 1876 and named after the three founders of the New York City firm: (Joseph W.) Bradley, (Luther C.) Voorhees, and (Lyman H.) Day (thus "B.V.D.")."

Ah. On this side of the Pond we might refer to them as "St. Michael's." Not so poetic, and doesn't rhyme with anything.
