Hi all, I am trying to ad some more knowledge for my fingers, I am playing with a girl witch is a friend of mine, she is from Scotland, and we are practicing tunes, and I would like learn to play kid on the Mountain in dadgad chords, if any of you mudcatters are already doing just that and could help us out here I would be glad, it would take my mind of those feckin volcanos who are about to blast near our Capital.
All the best Skarpi Iceland.

Thanks, yes it is bit tricky to play.
Today I used standard tuning and used, down, up, down
Dow,up,down, and it worked if we played it slower than we did before.
I will find my best way ás always.
All the best Skarpi Iceland

it can be done with 3 chords which are eminor d major and g major, the best thing is to learn to sing the tune and then try the chords
it starts with e minor so first part is first bar em d eminor 2nd bar e minor. 3rd bar e min d   g major
4th bar g major the d major.
you can use a power chord[ first and fifth or e modal instead of e minor if you are in dadgad

Hi, Skarpi. I got interested in "Kid on the Mountain," and I went to the Session page mentioned by gillymor. There are a lot of different tunes called by that name, and some are more interesting and more guitar-friendly than others.

I hope you and your friend are not just playing by ear. If anybody can read music, it would be good to play the different versions and pick out the one you like best. I think that it's good to avoid tunes where the guitar chords change many times. For example, I think the tune from Maxhe is a good one.

As for the volcano, I don't think you have cause for worry. This article (which I hope you can find in Icelandic) explains a lot.

https://www.visiticeland.com/eruption/

"The nature of eruptions in Iceland is diverse, from small effusive eruptions where lava flows quietly from fissures and crater rows to significant explosive eruptions in ice-covered central volcanos that produce large ash plumes—literally where fire meets ice."

The new volcano at Litli Hrutar looks like the first kind, small and effusive. It will not explode like Ejafjallafellajokull did, because it is made of a different kind of rock which does not trap gases and cause pressures to increase to deadly levels.

It looks like this newest volcano is dying out already, and the twenty-four miles between it and Reykjavik are plenty, I think.

I have been looking at videos of the new activity, and I do feel that some spectators are getting too close. Some people in Iceland act like these are pet volcanoes, but molten (melted) rock and poisonous gases are no joke.

Yes, don’t forget that these tunes were never intended to be accompanied by full chords on harmonic instruments like guitars, nor so many chord changes that the tune becomes secondary to the accompaniment. Best to keep to minimal changes and focus more on the 9/8 rhythm and the drone like quality of power chords (those without thirds in them); however this particular tune to my mind does sound good when it returns to the Em in the right places, and to G when it opens up in the later sections, as well as the general bouncing interplay between Em and D chords.

The important thing about slip jigs is the emphasis, according to Alistair Anderson the emphasis is on the first of each group of three, so in 9/8, which is slip jig time which is the tempo of kid o the mountain, i would hit 1, 4, 7 beats with my thumb or a downwards plectrum pick, because i find it easier to stress those notes with a downward motion, hope that helps you

Here is some more info on emphasis,
this time irish polkas, according to Matt Cranitch who plays with Jackie Daly there is an off beat emphasis.
It might be worth experimenting with a down thumb OR DOWN PICK on the offbeats

Some tutors recommend a strum for slip jigs,
so strum, down up down for a group of 3 so in 9/ 8 time you might do 3 of those
