I'll be in Halifax for a week, June 18 thru 23rd. Can anyone point me to good places for local music. I'll be staying right downtown. Any special artists or groups I should look out for?

There's a pub in Dartmouth called Celtic Corner that seems often to have fiddle music. You'll need a ride there.

Check out who's playing and/or sessions at the Old Triangle right downtown Halifax (Dave MacIsaac and Louis Benoit on Mondays or Tuesdays). That would be my first stop if I were staying downtown.

In Dartmouth, NS, just over the bridge, at the folklorist Helen Creighton's old house, Evergreen House, now a museum:

Trad Night
Helen Creighton Folklore Society

An evening of balladry and songs of old! Open Mic. Participants are asked to choose songs from the Helen Creighton Collection or similar collections.

When: Every second Thursday of the month

Time: 7-9pm

Where: Evergreen House aka the Dartmouth Heritage Museum

Cost: Donation

There are also regular events called I Sing Therefore I Am and the Helen Creighton Folk Club. Check the website (google is your friend here) for more info.

Come try the 3 Pigeons pub, near the railway station, you can get a good sing around going in there.

When travelling in Ireland, I found that the front desk of a hotel was a good place to ask about traditional music. Also the Tourist Information Office. See if it works in Halifax.
