Subject: Origins: Erin's Green Isle (The Irish Rovers) From: GUEST,Greum Date: 20 Jun 24 - 05:16 AM Hi folks. Does anyone know the origins of Erin's Green Isle as sung by The Irish Rovers? I have been unable to find any other versions online, so I'm guessing it was written by the band. Lyrics (with a couple of holes) are: I have wandered the pathways and byways of Erin’s green isle Enthralled by her beauty encountered for mile after mile From the port of Kinsale to the north coast of Antrim so wild Where nature prevails and your heart it will soon be beguiled. When the mountains and glades are ablaze with the colours of spring When the weavers are singing their songs how the valleys do ring While building their nests in the bushes of hawthorn and broom And the wild purple of heather that covers the hillsides and blooms. There are castles and towers, reminders of days that are gone And you’ll still hear the legends and stories and the music on And when I’m far away no matter where I chance to roam I will always think fondly of the green hills of my home. |
Subject: RE: Origins: Erin's Green Isle (The Irish Rovers) From: Reinhard Date: 20 Jun 24 - 11:36 AM The Discogs.com page for The Irish Rover's 2000 album Down By The Lagan Side says that Erin's Green Isle was written by their band member George Millar. There is also a somewhat blurry image of the song's lyrics. A few corrections from that: Verse 2 line 2 "weavers" -> "wee birds" Verse 2 line 4 "purple of heather that.." -> "purple heather it covers the hillside in blooms" Verse 3 line 2 "music on" -> "music lives on" Verse 3 line 4 "green hills" -> "green rolling hills" |

I'd not got round to listening to the song again - but I would probably still have been left with weavers! lol |
