Subject: RE: Any songs about slugs? From: RTim Date: 11 May 25 - 01:05 PM This is a True story...I have been to the Cheese Museum at Hawes and read it myself.... "We went to the Wensleydale Cheese factory last week and in their museum I noticed that slugs used to be boiled and the liquid strained off and bottled to be used as rennet to make cheese, at a time of year when they hadn't any calves stomachs - the slug solution has apparently the same enzymes. It said that the cheese tasted just as good. Anyone into cheese making want to try it?" Tim Radford |
Subject: RE: Any songs about slugs? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 11 May 25 - 01:35 PM The US Pacific Northwest is noted for its large variety of and large-sized slugs; I'm sure I heard a few songs about them growing up. Too bad Bob Nelson (Deckman) is gone, he would have several to offer. |
Subject: RE: Any songs about slugs? From: Robert B. Waltz Date: 11 May 25 - 02:17 PM To respond to the original question, the most obvious example of a slug song is "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" -- a New Zealand version has "Little boys are made of slugs and snails." "You Can't Ride In My Little Red Wagon" may have the chorus "Slug, slug, slug, slug, slug," though it's not clear if that's the invertebrate or the verb for hitting someone. |
Subject: RE: Any songs about slugs? From: Jack Campin Date: 11 May 25 - 03:16 PM "The Salting of the Slug" will be in the DT. I first came across it without the tune and assumed it went to "The Rising of the Moon" - it doesn't but both work. |

Subject: RE: Any songs about slugs? From: Bill D Date: 25 May 25 - 10:42 AM Hmmm. says it doesn't work. I'll just post it. YUCKY BUGS - Dan MacArthur We planted the cabbage at the end of the garden Sat back home and watched it grow They aren't much trouble; no one really likes to eat them 'Cept some little tiny bugs we all know. They don't have to grow in very good soil So it comes as a kind of a surprise That those cabbage worms will eat 'em 'till there ain't nothing left If you don't squash the little butterflies. Chorus: So come on down, let's go out and have a bug-squashing party tonight We'll squish those little buggers as they begin to flutter 'Till our fingers have turned all white. We'll clean the cabbage worms out of the cabbage patch And everything will work out right So come on down, let's go out and have a bug-squashing party tonight. Take a ramble through the brambles growing six feet tall Grab some berries and pop 'em in your mouth 'Cause it takes a lot of time to keep your berries healthy Takes water to keep away the drought. And then those little green bugs will come along and eat 'em 'Till the vines fall over in the rain But if you grab those little bugs, you can squish 'em in your fingers And your berry patch is healthy again. So come on down.... We'll kill those Japanese beetles in their shiny green armor If they don't get away in flight. They're loving each other all over the bushes Completely unaware of their plight So come on down.... Now slugs is bugs that nobody loves But everybody understands That they look disgusting, and they taste disgusting And they feel disgusting in your hands. But of all the little bugs that grow in the garden Slugs have a special place in my heart Because they like to drink beer, they'll drink any kind of beer And they never quit drinking once they start. So come on down, let's go out and have a slug-drowning party tonight No, they can't tell if they're floating in Guinness Or sinking in Miller Lite. They ain't particular and they got no taste And they'll drown in any beer in sight So come on down, let's go out, and have a slug-drowning party tonight. Now, I never would have believed I'd be telling my kids It's okay to kill another living thing And I know what you mean when you tell me even Japanese Beetles can learn how to sing. And I agree when you tell me every living thing Should have a chance to live the way that they wish But if I go and plant it, why then gol-dernit If you eat it you're gonna get squished. So come on down.... 'Cause we don't like to spray 'em and we don't want to zap 'em And we don't want to cause 'em any fright. If they'd leave us alone, we'd leave 'em alone And everything would work out right But come on.... |

Subject: RE: Any songs about slugs? From: Steve Taylor-Howlett Date: 28 May 25 - 06:18 PM I wrote a song about slugs. Maybe I’ll pop it on here when I get back home. It was inspired, if that’s not too grand a word, by our experience in moving from the desert-like conditions of South Yorkshire to the more fertile lands of the West Midlands, where the garden pests grew to an enormous size. The tune was taken from Gary and Vera Aspey’s setting of Cicely Fox Smith’s “From the North”, so I originally called it “From the heart”. We now call it The Warwickshire Slug-hunting song, or just Slug. |
Subject: RE: Any songs about slugs? From: Bruce from Bathurst Date: 29 May 25 - 11:41 PM "Banana Slugs Racing Down The Field" is on Strange Noises in the Dark by The Austin Lounge Lizards. Subject: RE: Any songs about slugs? From: Gorgeous Gary Date: 31 May 25 - 05:27 PM A friend of mine who sometimes does concerts for kids loves to sing a song titled "The Banana Slug Song". I always forget to ask for the lyrics, all I remember is the chorus which goes: "Oh, banana nana nana nana nana nana nana nana nana nana nana nana SLUG!" The verses are from the POV of a banana slug telling you about all his/her lovely qualities. Gary |
