If you'd like to read Part I, click here. -------------------------------- The newest additions to the Mudcat Songbook are both by Mbo. Subject: RE: Pt. II - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Áine Date: 28 Jan 00 - 02:15 PM The rumor had it that there was a great song on the 'How Many Folkies Does It Take...' thread, and the rumor was right! I've just added 'How Many Folkies Does It Take To Change A Lightbulb' by Amos to the Mudcat Songbook under the Thread Songs category. If you want a good chuckle to end your weary winter work week on, this song will do the job! Funny stuff, Amos! -- Áine |
Subject: RE: Pt. II - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Áine Date: 28 Jan 00 - 03:21 PM Like I've told Amos already -- when yer hot, yer hot! Subject: RE: Pt. II - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Áine Date: 28 Jan 00 - 06:34 PM Well, this has been a Red Letter Day for the Mudcat Songbook!!! It took Amos no time at all to win the First Ever Mudcat Song Challenge with 'Miz Henley's Revenge', a gem of a song about a fella escaping down a pole to avoid the police! And our own dear Mbo just sent me another one of his beautiful romantic songs, 'Firefall', full of unrequited love . . . ah, youth . . . Please check out both of these newest additions to the Mudcat Songbook ASAP! You'll be sorry if you don't, I guarantee! -- Áine |

If you haven't checked out the SONG CHALLENGE! thread, do so now and see where Amos' and LEJ's songs came from! And Mbo's been writing something sad and romantic again (very nice). And yes, I've added a little ditty myself. There ya go, have fun!

Subject: RE: Pt. II - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Áine Date: 30 Jan 00 - 07:07 PM As angst ridden as he was, our own dear Amos managed to write a song about the Great Mudcat Server Crash of 2000 -- which I just put in the Mudcat Songbook. Take a look at 'The Crash Of The Mudcat Server' by Amos -- that is, if you're not too busy catching up on all the threads you missed while the 'Cat was 'away' . . . -- Áine P.S. Subject: RE: Pt. II - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Amos Date: 30 Jan 00 - 11:57 PM Well, dear, I don't know how to make a maid for a day -- it's like that lightbulb joke, q.v., about pregnant women being different from lightbulbs. Way I see it, you get to be a maid, and then you don't. But most folks I know don't regret the change. :>))Tell you what though; I run a mean vacuum cleaner, wash dishes, can lay tile and put up drywall, and have been known (under severe protest) to do Windows although by preference I choose Unix or OS X. But those are a different color of Jobs altogether. I would gladly be your virtual slave, for a virtual day, to provide you with virtual housecleaning in consideration of your well-earned honor in the virtual contest. Consider it done! Mbo and I have tranformed your domicile to sparkling newness in every corner! A |

II - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Áine Date: 01 Feb 00 - 06:35 PM I tried to post this earlier today; but, my 'message failed to post' . . . so, I'm going to try it again: Added this afternoon to the Mudcat Songbook were: 'When A Packet Hits A Pocket' (Author Unknown) submitted by Patrish -- another great song from the 'Hatin' 'Puters' thread. 'Gastronomic Passions' by Amos -- I'm not explaining this one; so, you'll just have to go to the 'Mudcat Tavern #Who Knows?' thread to find out about it. Subject: RE: Pt. II - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: GUEST,Rich(stupidbodhranplayer..) Date: 03 Feb 00 - 07:11 PM Here's one I've been playing around with. It's to the tune of *The Devil Went down to Georgia* The Devil went down to Dingal, he was looking for a soul to steal, a little trip to the side for polkas and slides, He was tired of jigs and reels., Twas a ceili night in the pub's dim light and a man played the fiddle hot!, Well a Kerryman would be easy prey or so the Devil thought., The Devil said back home on Downing St I've been known to play myself.,(and he insincerely bent his arm to drink the young man's health), Says the Devil "You play a fine fiddle lad but if you take from me this cue, 6 counties I hold against your soul cause i think I'm better than you", The boy said my names Padraig, and it might be a sin, but I'll take your bet, you heathen Brit cause I'm the best that's ever been. Paddy you best play lively now, no time to play slow airs. coz Hell's broke loose in Kerry and the devil don't play fair., And if you win your island home will finally be whole, But if you lose the Devil takes your soul. The Devil opened up this case and he said I'll start this show, and the whole world looked the other way as he stepped on Padraig's toe. And he pulled a bit of rosin from a fancy velvet sack, and played a tune so foul it'd curl the hair off of Margaret Thatcher's back. When the Devil finished Padraig "said that's pretty weak old hoss, so sit down in that chair rigt there, let me show who's the boss." Kid on the Mountain,Mother and Child, Sweeney's Polka, Miss McLeod's, Bucks of Oranmore, Harvest Home, A slide whose name's no longer known, Plough and the Stars, Doctor O'Neills, The Foxhunter's (both the jig and the reel)Paddy finished his rake with the Flowing Bowl. And clearly he would be keeping his soul. The Devil bowed his head because he felt a little sick, With the tunes of 32 counties, Padraig had him licked! , But as previously mentioned the Devil don't play fair and the borders on the map still show those counties six as theirs. But as for the true victor well, you and I both know, and I'm proud to say the Devil stays away when and Irishman lifts his bow.
Well that's my contribution, put in the book if you like. Slan, Rich |
Subject: RE: Pt. II - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Amos Date: 03 Feb 00 - 07:17 PM Rich: Ths is terrific -- a beautiful meeting of old and new, Irish and Georgian! Here's a small suggestion in the preparing of messages in the Mudcats unique environment. Type the characters " " (without the quotes) each place where a line should break, twice between complete verses. There are easy ways to do it -- one is to copy the characters once, so you can paste it as many times as you want to. I love this adaptation! Thanks! Amos |
Subject: RE: Pt. II - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Amos Date: 03 Feb 00 - 07:38 PM Sorry -- that should read "the characters (LEFT BRACKET) B R (RIGHT BRACKET) using the angle brackets and br in lower case". It disappeared because I typed it. I know there's a literal in html but I have gorgotten what it is. :>)) |

Subject: RE: Pt. II - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Áine Date: 04 Feb 00 - 08:58 AM [Thanks Amos! I was going to around to doing that last night; but, between the hockey game and the new SONG CHALLENGE! WINNERS Page, I didn't have enough time.] This morning's (yawn!) additions to the Mudcat Songbook are: The Devil Went Down to Dingle by Rich (Stupidbodhranplayer etc.,etc., etc.), a great parody on 'The Devil Went Down to Georgia' AND The Little Family by McGrath of Harlow, a very moving song about the cost of war. These are both wonderful submissions -- please go and look at them. Keep playing, singing, and writing, Áine |
Subject: RE: Pt. II - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Amos Date: 04 Feb 00 - 09:44 AM Well, between hockey, four kids and the Mudcat I'm not surprised you're burning the candle a bit short. We appreciate you! Favour request: next time you're slashing HTML code on the Songbook, would you change then name of "Fred Dyer's Bees" to "Wired Bees" for me? I actually have no reason to think Fred Dyer is the opportunist I described in the song, and have no wish to slander him. Tracking bees on an oscilloscope, and wiring up their little fannies, is a durrrrrty job, but someone has to do it. Thanks, luv. A |
Subject: RE: Pt. II - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Áine Date: 04 Feb 00 - 10:08 AM Dear Amos, Correction noted and made! The kids and I are off to a museum field trip, so I'll catch ya later on the backside, OK? (No, not THAT backside -- ya know, the CB-talk backside -- ya know, the return trip . . . or did I completely just embarrass myself for nufin'?) -- Áine |
Subject: RE: Pt. II - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Amos Date: 04 Feb 00 - 10:22 AM I believe the expression is "Catch you on the flipflop, good buddy". ;>) A |
Subject: RE: Pt. II - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Áine Date: 04 Feb 00 - 10:26 AM Just don't fall off the stage when you flip that flop, Amos! (like Gary Bauer did last week - hahaha!). -- Áine |
Subject: RE: Pt. II - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Amos Date: 04 Feb 00 - 11:14 AM I'm not the one that usually falls over when my flip flops. Wouldn't know about on stage, though...hmmmm. :>)) A |
Subject: RE: Pt. II - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Willie-O Date: 04 Feb 00 - 11:42 AM Henh, I blew out my flip-flop. stepped on a pop-tart. No, that ain't it. Aine, I sent you the words to my Talking Maple Syrup Blues as a followup to my other sugarbush song--did they get lost in the shuffle? Great productivity rush on the Cat and in the songbook--your work is appreciated. It's turning into quite the reference. Pretty soon you should send it to the Ballad Index project. ;>= New variants just discovered! W-O |
Subject: RE: Pt. II - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Áine Date: 04 Feb 00 - 02:46 PM Willie-O, Nope, can't find the Talking Maple Syrup Blues --- me thinks the song was probably a victim of the great C drive crash. Please, please, send them to me again. Everything seems to be up and working as normal these days (backup, backup, backup!!!). I promise to place your song in the Songbook ASAP when I get it. -- Áine |
Subject: RE: Pt. II - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: GUEST,Rich Date: 04 Feb 00 - 05:28 PM Amos' [] Thanks, I'll try the brackets. Every time I've tried to post in columns my post ended up lumped together, as it did in the song. [] And to Metchosin, THe stupid bodhran player tag is just to sort of a way of reminding myself of of my place in the musical food chain, and besides it's better coming from myself than from someone else. But thank you. [] Slan [] Rich |
Subject: RE: Pt. II - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Amos Date: 04 Feb 00 - 05:39 PM Rich: It's the angle brackets left and right, not the squared off ones. ..> and ..< . Hope this displays okay. A |
Subject: RE: Pt. II - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Áine Date: 04 Feb 00 - 05:42 PM Dear Rich, As a fellow bodhrán player, I believe our place in the musical food chain is at the TOP! I know we have to take a lot of slagging; but, what would Irish music be without us? I would even hazard a guess that the bodhrán was the *first* true instrument of Celtic culture, being that it probably arose from the winnowing drum. I placed your tag along with your name on the page with your song so that fellow Mudcatters would know who you were. If you would rather I remove it, I'll be happy to do so. Let 'em make fun us, *we* know who's the most important person in any ceilidh band! -- Áine |

Subject: RE: Pt. II - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Áine Date: 04 Feb 00 - 08:54 PM I've added the last (but certainly not least) entry in the SONG CHALLENGE! Part 3 to the Mudcat Songbook. It's 'I'm A Ping Bee' by The Shambles. You can find it on the SONG CHALLENGE! WINNERS page under the Golden Cow Chip Award with Cleigh's Blue Fume Shield winners for a wonderful blues rendition in a challenge. Check it out, along with all the other songs! Have fun and enjoy, Áine |
Subject: RE: Pt. II - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Susan A-R Date: 04 Feb 00 - 09:38 PM I believe that the maple sugar song Willie O mentioned is on a thread having to do with Ice Harvesting. Also, get him to submit The Scheduled Power Outage and a few others from his Legends Seldom Heard tape. I have a few burried in the threads somewhere. I'll go hunting. Susan a-R |

Subject: RE: Pt. II - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Áine Date: 04 Feb 00 - 11:47 PM The last addition for the day is: 'Love Unexpected' by Mbo; a SONG CHALLENGE! winner and a wonderful song about (what else?) love and its mysteries. Grab the tissue box before you read this one -- it's gonna getcha! Look for this beautiful creation on the SONG CHALLENGE! WINNERS page. -- Áine |
Subject: RE: Pt. II - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Áine Date: 05 Feb 00 - 09:48 AM The latest addition to the SONG CHALLENGE! WINNERS page is not a song, but a poem by Amos entitled 'The Night Before We Met.' It reminds me of the sean-nós 'call and answer' songs of Ireland, and is equally moving and beautiful. Very appropriate for the Month of Love. Read it and enjoy. -- Áine |

Subject: RE: Pt. II - Additions to Mudcat Songbook From: Áine Date: 05 Feb 00 - 07:38 PM This evening's addition to the Mudcat Songbook is a beautiful ballad from Barry Taylor entitled 'An Emigrant's Daughter,' and tells the true story of the voyage of his Irish ancestors from County Tyrone to Canada in 1842. And being Barry Taylor, he's of course included a midi for the tune. Well done, Barry! Go and have a listen and enjoy. -- Áine |
