Ickle - a hobbit, suspicious to other hobbits, as he or she actually goes near water and has been known to row a boat on the river Brandywine.

Frodo, who was a Brandybuck by heritage, changed his name to Baggins when he was adopted by his cousin Bilbo Baggins. His horrible cousins the Sackville-Bagginses didn't like the fact that Frodo inherited Bilbo's hobbit hole instead of them--they told him he was merely one of those backwoods Brandybucks, and not a bonifide respectable Baggins.

Well, I did love the Mudcat but I am rapidly going off it, not because of the people here but becuse of the way it appears to be run and I am getting pissed off.

Towards the end of last year, I sent a personal message to Max regarding an mp3 I wanted to send to for the Mudcat Radio- only me - no big deal but no reply.

Around the same time, I discovered a security problem in Mudcat that was serious. If you think the anon/ guest business was a problem, imagine what it was like when http://www.mugat.org/admin was PUBLICLY available. Yes, I am not joking I had free access to all of your member details. I have not got those but if anybody doubts my word, I will send them an HTML file which unless there was a much later change in the system, will allow anybody to assume anybody elses identity and allow posting to any thread (only included members who existed at that time)- at a minimum you can have the member ID for anybody.

Addmittedly Max was on holiday when I first posted but it took several attempts befroe there was any reply (I had got another mudcatter involved by that time but don't know whether that person had any involvement).

A couple of weeks ago, another Mudcatter posted to me as she wanted to send some songs to the Mudcat radio but the files were larger that her email account permitted. I agreed to use another method of transer and recieved the files and sent Max an email asking if he wanted them. Again, I have received no reply and I am stuck in the middle.

2 Days ago Max sent messages to some of us with ICQ, I tried to set up a room and tonight while he was on, tried to ask him what he thought - no reply. Most people at least have the courtesy to say "can't chatnow" or "will reply later"...

Max my be a busy man but this is the 4th time and I am sick of it. (And 2 of these involve something he says he wants contibutions or and 1 was probably the biggest security problem Mudcat has had)

The problem I have had is more a matter of getting a response from Max than anything else and I wouldn't worry too much about the security issues mentioned or linked to by "thread watcher".

In case anybody is worried, I must make it clear that the issue concerning member details such as address and phone number was closed and although a hacker could probably find them, it is beyond the reach of most of us (and that includes me) and I do not have and didn't look at anyother member detials except mine and the member I asked to help when I seemed to be unable to persuade Max that there was a real problem.

There are still what I consider to be minor security (this post may demonstrate one) problems here but overall, I believe the site is secure.

Has anyone on this thread thought to ask Max (a) how many mails a day he gets from MudCat readers in addition to his ordinary volunteer duties watching over the system and getting it up when it's down, tending to improvements and keeping up with sysadmin issues? I am a strong believer in good comm ddisciplines, but I also know you have to be circumspect about demanding things from people who are already turning out great work on a volunttary basis. Unless you're willing to do a better job in their place. This sort of community works on freely granted goodwill, not on rosters of duty and tasking. Let us not harass the giver of golden eggs.

I have to be very careful here. I am fighting a very strong urge here to tell you to leave. I understand that you feel personally offended here, but the man has created a site that is incredibly popular. He does it out of love for the site, and it is rapidly driving him to bankruptcy. He does it in his "spare" time, that is, while he is could be earning a living or playing with his kids or having a life. I know this is terribly hard to understand, but perhaps he just doesn't have time to answer your email. The Mudcat exists because Max is fucking nuts enough to keep it going. I, for one, will not allow ANY criticism of the man. Now maybe you are just having a bad bit of it, and if so I sincerely hope things get better. But if your criticisms reflect a genuine belief that perhaps Max could quit his day job in order that he might more efficiently answer emails from all of us................well, it's been nice knowing you, and perhaps it is indeed time for you to look for a more efficiently run site. Thanks for all your contributions, and goodbye.

Mick

Amos, I don't think Jon's saying that he's annoyed by a lack of response to his messages to Max constitutes "harassment." It's Jon's statement of how he feels.

It makes it tough that Mudcat is run by a one person staff (not counting elves). But even the understanding that Max is a busy guy doesn't prevent one from feeling ignored when he doesn't get a response.

Mick, I sent my message before I read yours. If you think that someone should leave this place because they think it's not perfect, or if you think people shouldn't be allowed to complain, or if you think Max wouldn't care if people were upset about something, I THINK you're wrong. Can you possibly consider the feelings of both Max AND Jon, or would you rather have people just shut the fuck up and pretend they're happy?

I don't want to hear anyone inviting people to leave because they don't personally like what that person has to say. Maybe if you don't want to hear people say how they honestly feel, you're the one that better take a hike.

My last contribution in (at least) this thread. Thanks for all your contributions, and goodbye.

Jon, Jeri:

Not getting answers to any well-intended communication is frustrating, and I think we all understand that. It is natural to feel ignored if you don't get an answer when you have communicated.

There are, however, times and places when the best thing you can do is a gentle repeat of the question, or a graceful silence in the spirit of contribution to the community; just feeling annoyed is not, by itself, sufficient grounds for acting annoyed..

Estimate those among whom you are communicating, and choose accordingly.

Mick I may get a life and may leave but before I do you get real... In one of the examples I quoted above, there was a page http://mudcat.org/admin.... It was publicly avaialable.. Thehere has been much paranoia round here but I kept that quiet and it appeared to need the help of another Mudcat member to get it sorted... The fact was I wasn;t listend to and much as I like the efforts Max has made, to have that publicly available is serous busnissess. Try to reconsider your stance here. If Max read for content and priorities that was urgent and if it had not of been for my good will, could have been badly abused. It should not of even taken the attempts of another person to help me...

Get real, think aboout the consequencses if someone else had found that... I posted to Max - get your head striaght man. I tried to stop what Max should not have allowed in the first place and was ignored

I am wrong, and I humbly and sincerely ask Jon's forgivness. It was very early in the morning, I was very tired, and I have been very distressed at where the Mudcat has been going lately. Tie that up with an murderous work schedule and you have a perfect prescription for an exercise in very poor judgement. Jon, I want to apologize to you publicly for my attitude. It was not a show of what is good about the Mudcat. I hope you will consider accepting it. It is sincerely offered.

I am posting this as a second message because I did not want it to dilute from the sincere apology I was offering for the tone of my previous message. That needs to stand on its own. Jon did not have that coming, and losing him would be a tremendous blow.

What I do want to add is that in the apology, I do not want to lose that which I feel is correct in my post. Any 'Catter who is not aware of the tremendous price that Max pays to give us a site that we have come to love so, needs to become aware of it. I would not like to be ignored either, but if you would examine the load that Max is under to provide us all with the enjoyment we get here, then latitude when he errs should be the rule. And not knowing all the details, I am not even sure he erred. But I do know this; public chastisement of him should not be tolerated. Just sitting reading the original post, I thought of at least 4 other ways the message could have been gotten to him. And none of them involved scolding him publicly.

As to those among you who found my inviting someone to leave, you should remember that it was the original post that raised that spectre. While I had no right to come off so imperious, I was responding to the original post. I still stand by my contention that Max must always be given the benefit of the doubt in these circumstances. The sacrifices he makes on our behalf demand that. If there is something that needs fixing, offer assistance and not criticism.

Mick

Well, this is going to be my last post on this thread...really...no, I mean it this time.

Mick, I'd come home from a wonderful party at Animaterra's to find your message. It was late and I got extremely pissed off, (in case you couldn't tell) and working on a migraine, although I didn't know it at the time. From Max's end, he's working his butt off on a labor of love. From Jon's end, Max didn't answer his posts about a very serious matter.

Re: "If there is something that needs fixing, offer assistance and not criticism." - if one does the amount of work Jon did to document the problem, and go to the trouble he went to to make sure Max was aware of it, isn't this going above and beyond what's needed to meet the "offer assistance" part? Don't you think it shows he's willing to help? I'd volunteer my services as personal secretary, but I doubt I could fulfill all obligations from a few states away. ("Max, you got 312 messages from MudGroupies who all want your body and/or naked photos, 3 messages from people who keep tossing their cookies, and 1 from Jon, who's just discovered where you keep everyone's credit card numbers and the launch codes.")

I am posting as guest becuase I have already taken the descision that I am leaving Mudcat, at least for the time being, have deleted by cookies and can't be bothered to re-join for one last message.

Following Mick's example, I do appogogise publicly to Max (and any others that I may of offended) and I know that I should not of done what I did publicly in this thread.

The reason for my leaving is nothing to with not getting a response from Max but because Mudcat has been taking over too much of my life and also that I have been getting very bitter over a lot of things lateley.

I wil not and do not excuse my behavoiur but I have just seen the folk club and the 2 sessions I started localy turn sour on me and at the moment (they still run but I am no longer wanted or part of them after over 20 years of trying to help get things going and keep things going round here), I am feeling pretty useless and it was starting to feel that every attempt I made to try and do anything constructive was almost automatically rejected and I suppose I have been trying to use Mudcat to fill a gap in my life and that is not really a healthy thing to do.

I have made many good friends in Mudcat and I feel no animosity towards anybody and assuming Max will forgive me and let me re join, I will probably be back sometime in the future.

I had started an active list to provide a common meeting place for Mudcatters and looks as if it should be useful at times like the Mudcat radio. It is still in its infancy and currently has 16 members. If anybody would like to take on ownership of the list (it was always my intention to hand it over to someone with better resources than me if it worked anyway) please let me know either by e-mail (jonbanjo@freeuk.com) or ICQ 52197911

Hey, Jon!!!

I can't speak for Mudcat in totobut if we-all can fill a gap in you rlife, for my part I'm glad to help. Mudcat fills a gap in my life, too, and I don't think its a bit unhealthy at all to have a gap filled by such a good bunch of folks, including yourself. Don't just walk out mad. I can dig there was a communication error, human-style, but you (and we) are probably big enought to ride through that whole.

Anyway, I hope you don't go off bitter, because anything Mudcate does for you is possible because you have done things for Mudcat, in my perspective. So thanks, and hang around.

Add something physical -- scubadiving, horseback riding, welding giant statues, splitting rails, frequent sex, and cooking buffalo steaks -- quick!!

There is a solid world that is waiting for you to throw yourself into it!!!

Actually since you are in pursuit of a design degree making several copies of the MudCat Non-Tunable Bass Profundo is a good start; and Dave would enjoy very much receiving an authentic 1:32 scale model of the fishing schooner Bluenose, the greatest Canadian sailing craft ever sunk by a damn-fool gringo!

Or a a model of some other lifesized beaver thing would be equally welcome, I am sure!!

Love ya, man!

Amos, hoofing it around East Carolina University is physical enough, especially with this heavy pull cart I have to haul around. Oh, the pains of being an art student!

I used to snorkel in Okinawa, but not anymore. Horses? I'd probably fall off! I can't weld--graphite & computers are my medium. I never split rails, but have hacked up my trees with a chainsaw than I can count. Sex? Like alcohol. Don't touch the stuff. I don't know about buffalo steaks, but I'm a very good barbequer--or so I've been told!

Jon,

I understand completely how their are times when you need to get away. I have had to make such choices recently due to family, job and my band. But I would point out to you that if you were to but do a name search on yourself and reread your posts (as I did, before I apologized to you) you would find that you have been a very valuable participant here. The fact that we may disagree from time to time, or even act stupidly as I did, just proves we are a community. We are entitled to that. Would you just consider just cutting back your visits, if that is what you need for yourself? The thing that you wouldn't get by leaving us is the validation that comes from your good work. You uncovered an important piece of security information, you have exposed us to Jeri's wonderful compositions, and many other things. But most importantly you have let us be exposed to a very nice person. Please give it some thought, won't you?

With regard to the other fella who has a pathological need to make himself feel better by cutting on folks he feels insecure about..........Don't worry young fella, when you grow up you will learn to be able to understand what an honest apology looks like. And, you will also learn what honor is about. Like when the last time you went off on one of your rants, you referenced a personal message. Bad form, Rog-o. Now, please leave your unwanted analysis out of this and let us convince Jon that the Mudcat is better with him than without him. I welcomed you back when you came back, prove to me that I was right in doing so and drop this silliness here. We both have better uses for our time.

Sincerely,

Big Mick

Oh, okay. As long as the Real World is not being neglected entirely I feel I can trust that you will exercise Wise Judgement in living your life; so I do not need to offer more useless advice. Sorry if I interfered, I was just worried that you were living entirely on messages!

Mick, you know what temptation is like and I obviuosly have come back for one more read...

I genuinely do belive that I need to take a break from Mudcat I but feel that it needs to be said that whatever comments were exchanged between yourself and me are not an issue here and there is no bad feeling from my side.

I am likely to return but think I need to get more of a grip of my own life (so that I don't let places like Mudcat have as much control over my life as I had allowed) before I do.

Jon

(Hoping this makes it clear that I have no bad feelings towards anyone - please let's have nobody blaming others for my descision and although I got angry, is ultimately based on my life and is nothing to do with any Mudcatter)

Mick.

I have already contacted Jon privately, if he receives enough of our support I hope that it may cause him to, reconsider his decision.

As you seem incapable of replying to me personally and appear to NEED to do this in public. I will answer you publicly and apologise in advance to all the rest of The Mudcat who are not interested in our personal disagreements. However I will try to resist the temptation of responding to you in the same 'tone ' as you seem to need to do, to me. For no one here needs to "prove" anything to YOU. There may be something YOU could demonstrate to those here though. A little humility perhaps?

The 'tone' of my last posting was ill conceived and I regret that. I did not take my own advice and think again, before posting. As a synopsis of where we are, it still stands up pretty well though but I will try here to concentrate on the issues.

You may not welcome my analysis of events but when you post publicly, you are open to the danger of maybe getting what you deserve, rather than what you necessarily want.

It is of some surprise to me, that you feel that you have to respond to criticism of your actions, for I may have expected some criticism if I were in your position. It would be the shame, guilt and embarrassment of receiving praise, in this situation, that would cause me far more concern. For you are still at the party and receiving toasts! Jon is not.

To those who feel that I am being hard on someone who has apologised, I can only say that I understand that view but that this whole episode is repeating a sad and sorry pattern. One where Mick's victims, get hurt and leave and where Mick stays, accepts no responsibility and never appears to learn from the experience and as a result will repeat it.

As to an honest apology? Yes I do know how to recognise one. It is NOT one that is immediately followed by an attempt to regain 'the moral high ground' as yours was. If you could only have stopped at that point I would have had the utmost respect for you and honestly felt that we may have moved on. The apology mentions the word "humble" but I see little subsequent evidence of that humility and the real test of an apology is whether it is accepted and effective in making the hurt party feel better?

We have been here before have we not? Each time after you have 'fired from the hip' and directly and indirectly driven folk away. Jon had other reasons, which he clearly stated but the 'tone' of your post would have hardly helped, would it, maybe a case of 'The Straw That Breaks The Camels Back'?

All I would ask of you now and all I have asked of you before is, that you think of the possible effect of your "fierce rebuttals" on all other posters, before you post them? If it is addressed to an individual, maybe it should be sent to them privately and that may at least, prevent all this public grief?

I note that you say you did a name search on Jon, after your 'apology'. MICK, why on earth could you not have done that before you asked him to leave?

You repeatedly see my criticism of your actions and their results, on this issue as a criticism of you personally and you don't like it. Can you not imagine how your victims feel especially as you 'pull no punches' and speak with the authority of Mudcat and the silent majority ? If I were to say sorry to you now, for making you feel bad, it would not make you feel better automatically?

When our children were young, we used to say to them, "the fact that I do not like some of the things you, do, does not mean I do not like YOU". If that could be the unsaid message of ALL our postings, it may help. Can we please at least learn something from the "silliness', this time?

Folks, I will not respond to these anymore. There are obviously issues at work here that I will attempt to deal with privately. I will debate issues always. That is part and parcel to my participation. but I will not address motives here ever again. I think that is good sauce.

I invite you all to examine my posts here and make of them me what you will. Those that know me know that the apology was honestly given for the thing I did wrong which was to use an unkind and imperious tone, as well as invite someone to leave. I don't know what else I can say on that issue. As to the issue of criticism of Max, which was a separate issue, I stand by my post. As to Roger's anger towards me, I can't do much more about it. I will no longer address it or respond to people who presume to tell me what my thoughts and motives are. Roger, for the good of this place, please let this die. I am out of this thread.

Mick

Shambles has just given us the best example of a qualified apology. Who are you to reprimand Mick? Asshole.
