Anybody here seen my old friend Abraham
Can you tell me where he's gone
He freed a lot of people
Seems the good die so young

Anybody here seen my old friend Martin
Can you tell me where he's gone
He freed a lot of people
Seems the good die so young

Anybody here seen my old friend John
Can you tell me where he's gone
He freed a lot of people
Seems the good die so young

Maybe someone else can touch it up.

I've sung this as a sort of medley with Where have all the flowrs gone...and at least a simple version only needs 3 chords

(G(Anybody here seen my (C) old friend (G) Abraham
(C)Can you tell me where he's (D7) gone
(C(He freed a lot of (D7) people (G) now (C)I just turned a(D7)round and he was (G) gone.

I'm sure some of you real guitar players have a more elegant version (I'll be watching!) but this is servicable.

Arkie, Here's the "touch up."

ABRAHAM, MARTIN AND JOHN
Written by Dick Holler
As recorded by Dion on "Dion" (1968)

1. Anybody here seen my old friend Abraham?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot o' people, but it seem the good, they die young,
You know I just looked around and he's gone.

2. Anybody here seen my old friend John?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot o' people, but it seem the good, they die young,
I just looked around and he's gone.

3. Anybody here seen my old friend Martin?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot o' people, but it seem the good, they die young,
I just looked 'round and he's gone.

BRIDGE: Didn't you love the things that they stood for?
Didn't they try to find some good for
You and me?
And we'll be free
Someday soon; it's gonna be one day.

4. Anybody here seen my old friend Bobby?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
I thought I saw him walkin' up over the hill
With Abraham, Martin, and John.

ABRAHAM, MARTIN, AND JOHN
Written by Dick Holler, recorded by Dion

[D] Has anybody [F#m7] here [Em7] seen my [A] old friend Abraham?
[D] Can you [F#m7]tell me where he's [Em]go—[A]--ne?
[Bm] He freed a lot of [F#m(7)] people,
But it [Em] seems the good, they [G] die [A] young.
[G] I just [A] looked 'round and he was [G] gone. [D]

[Bm] Didn't you [F#m7] love the [Em] things that they [G] stood [A] for?
[Bm] Didn't they [F#m7] try to [Em] find some [G] good for [D] you and me?
And [C9] we'll be free...
...[G] someday, [Em]soon, we're gonna be [A] wonderin'...[D]

D = X00232
F#m7 = 242222
Em = 022000
G = 320033
A = 002220
Bm = 224432
C9 = 332033

Have fun. D seemed to work best for the simplest voicings for that m7 sound.

I hadn't come across the last verse or bridge before - MOR radio in the UK often truncates.

Abraham = Lincoln
Martin = Luther King
John = F Kennedy ?
Bobby = Kennedy ?

Sorry to be an iggerant limey!

Alan

Apparently, Dion was not the author.

Links in previous threads say:

"Words and music by Dick Holler"

I just listened to a recording by the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus. The album is "California Freedom Tour 2010."

They added a verse at the end:

"Has anybody here seen my old friend Harvey?"--referring to Harvey Milk, I presume. An appropriate addition, in my opinion.
