(jan 31) One drastic way to change our relationship with nature is to be recovering from illness. I go out, weak but well, and it is all different. January is now a beautiful greypearl everywhere, and it is as if I have a skin too few. Partly because I am translucent, with so little strength, the wind goes through me unopposed, but so do the colours and the shapes. I don't analyse or think about them: I am too tired to do anything but just let them happen. And without any filter, it makes sense that the bend in that ash tree is sympathetic; that the off-green moss between the swirls of snow is a dream of mine that I must have had, but don't now remember; that it is all too much for one short walk. If one could only have such experiences -- that everything comes in unguarded -- when one is strong: but perhaps in this, as in so much else, it is our strength that makes us weak. Time to go back to bed....

Peter is it so good to see you on here and to read your eloquence.

I think in moments of extreme weakeness, when our bodies are almost spent from the energy it takes to recover, when our minds have almost been put on hold because all of the concentration, subconciously, has had to go to survival in a langorous *sickbed* way, we are sometimes most open to a surreal, other world such as you describe or at least another veiw of what has always been there.

Tomorrow, I hope the wind and colours and such don't go through you, though, as then I shall you are getting better.

....Echoes of Aldous Huxley's The Doors Of Perception wherein the brain, not under the influence of certain hallucinogenic toxins, (or, I presume, in your case, fever) acts as a reducing valve. The trick is, as you indicate, Peter T., is how to keep the doors open without becoming eyeball deep in "chemical refreshment (Zappa)."

Much food for thought. Love your perceptions, but sympathize with your weakened physical state. In that sense, I'm glad you're on the mend.

Regards, Neil
