Threads expanding and I hear a little mockingbird has counted out and found the new tavern number, so grab your drinks and instruments and prepare to beam over to MudCat Tavern # 21

Fantastico, dear Mbo! Oh goodness, and I promised RtS *not* to be poetic anymore . . . Do you think you could sing some of it for me too? You'd just have to change it from first person to third person; and with your amazing grammatical skills, that should be a breeze!

Aine, I'm glad you like the tune! Oh course, that MIDI program doesn't do full justice to it. I think I'm going to record a little bit of the song how it should be played, and send it over to you. Much more realistic!

Tell you what, get one of those big bottles of Metaxas with a tap on front, put it in the cornerwith the tap towards me, gimme a big scone ( or some sticky Greek sweet: kataifi or folya for preference) and I'll be quiet as a mouse (until about the seventh glass, that's when I might start "singing")while you guys sing & play and.... whatever else seems to be going on with the clotted cream over there!

RtS - you STILL have to skirt the jello pit and the velcro-jumpers! And I'm gonna ask LEJ if we can move the taps to the FRONT of the bar for easier self-serve....

But Amos, YOU got the last (and best) scone now, didn't you?

Roger, Mbo, Amos and I now take the pledge not to wax poetic from here on out in this thread; unless it's about incandescent pickles, heads on sticks, or naked men on poles. Will that do ya?

Go on, big fella, spill your beer on the bar and knock the corn chips on the floor!! It's your tavern too, so go for it!

You can see why our Áine is so terrific with kidlets.

She's a master at motivation!

What I wouldn't give for a Golden Cow Chip now. (Sigh)

The better man has won it, though. I'll just have to try harder next time! See what I mean?

Ah, that Aine is a wonder.

Grumble,grumble... When I saw we were back to the traditional Tavern I thought: "Good, I don't have to dress up in period costume or use period language."
Now I find you have to be a poet, a lyricist or a multi-instrumentalist to get a drink round here.
It was (sigh) much easier when we just had to skirt round the jello pit and avoid the velcro jumpers!
OK I'm a totally non-musical kazoo player so gimme a drink or I'll prove it![rats come out of holes and start throwing themselves on the traps]

seriously - I could probably play around and come up with a tune for it, but if I'm gonna botch-up the song and sing it, it would be fun to have a tune to your lyrics.

Mario, I wrote those lyrics when I had just turned 18--before I started college--I had these great long periods of time to think of lyrics--now the pressures of printmaking (if only you could see how much ink and asphaltum I have on my hands right now!) are eating up my time--but I sense possibly a new songwriting revolution for me in the future....I tried to write music for it a few days after I had written it--I wasn't at all into tunewriting back then, (in fact, I was really bad) so I never gave it a second look. But I just might try something now. Since I'm up on Renaissance lute, vilhuela, and classical guitar music now, I might be able to come up with a tune for it!

Sweetly said all. I must confess the layers of reality do collide here and there -- leaving the Tavern, I realized I had departed rudely, not with proper adieux, but that was because, in that spacetime, I had had too much Rofli Oil or whatever that brew is called. Phew!

At the same time I was hitting the midweek fatiques in California, so had to shut down the mac and retire for the night, hence my departure.

A third layer at work (due to the fatigue) was that it was growing hard to come up with Elizabethan couplets, and thus keep up a decent conversation.

The tavern, and my office at home, and the far off universe of Elizabethan thoughts and phrases, all bubbles which slid together and collapsed in the welcome surfeit of sleep. What a strange way to live -- like a multilayered mousse with a candle in it!

What a brilliant and fun crew y'all are! Thanks for the evening.

Ah, Mudcat discourse, once so plain,
A loftier tone somehow has ta'en:
We're Amos'd here and Emboed there
And Áined and Sorchaed otherwhere.
No more the possum blower rules,
Nor farts ignit by other fools!
Nay, high romance hath now the sway
Where banjo jokes once ruled the day...

And she replies:

What ho, my stranger, sweet and kind
Over repasted with drink so fine
That he now leaves the Tavern here
And maidens weeping in their beer
And sweet young minstrel made of stone
From whom no woman now could hone
Twa words of love requite or no
Stands now without in falling snow
Ye gods if there be justice here
Send soothing music to mine ear
And calm the raging heart within
And save it from all mortal sin
By leaving I doth recognize
The pain of silence 'twain the prize
Of having two such songsters dwell
Within the realm of hill and dale
But lo' what sound do cometh close
Tis the sound of mudcat boast
What frolick to my ears bestow
Of laughing kats with spaws in tow
Oh happy day, geraw, geree
I see a future bright for me
An end has come to lonesome days
Beginnings bright in Mudcat Days!

And then Mbo replied:

In the golden days of yore
In a simple time that is no more
There was a lively troubadour
Who loved to turn a tune

He lived for many kinds of song
From galliards to ballads long
And never known to play a note wrong
Under the sun or under the moon

He was the knight's and guard's delight
They all rejoiced at just one sight
In the dark there burned a light
Of intellect and wit

A large, round, tawny lute he played
A great one he himself had made
With fancy-crafted wood inlayed
And for it, many works were writ

At the castle, at the fort
He even graced the King's own court
With songs and dances of every sort
Never would he quit

And when the King went off to war
With soldiers, knights, squires, and more
They took the lively troubadour
With them on their way

On a horse's back he spent
Playing marches as they went
And at night, in his tent
The soldiers came to hear him play

And when a heavy fight ensued
To his lute he stayed glued
With his tunes he set the mood
Above the battle's roar

But alas! An arrow stray
Pierced him in an awful way
Prostrate on the ground he lay
The lively singer was no more

The noble soldiers, with honor due
Erected there, a statue to
The courageous little lutenist who
Had died in glory, brave and true.

Just a little something I wrote a while back. I thought it might work since we're doing the high-diction thing. BTW I love high-diction!

But my lyre lacketh lust betimes;
'Twere meet I polish all its gentle lines!
A song, fair damsel, aye, anon, anon. (Takes out lyre and polishes it with his cape, running the corner of the cloth between the strings and humming. Then tightens a string, plucks, and sings a ditty, glancing at the assorted scones about brightly):

Sir Russel, and not I, did author this;
but I will borrow it to please the house, appended with a kiss! (strums)

WHEN the breath of twilight blows to flame the misty skies,
All its vaporous sapphire, violet glow and silver gleam,
With their magic flood me through the gateway of the eyes;
I am one with the twilight's dream.

When the trees and skies and fields are one in dusky mood,
Every heart of man is rapt within the mother's breast:
Full of peace and sleep and dreams in the vasty quietude,
I am one with their hearts at rest.

Aye, and deep and deep and deeper let me drink and draw
From the olden fountain more than light or peace or dream,
Such primæval being as o'erfills the heart with awe,
Growing one with its silent stream.

From our immemorial joys of hearth and home and love
Stray'd away along the margin of the unknown tide,
All its reach of soundless calm can thrill me far above
Word or touch from the lips beside.

(Ends with minor flourish and bows to a light patter of applause, Retireth unto his Klugle Rauschelle.)

And she replies:

Dear sir, quoth she, such couth have ye
As the singing birds perched in yon tree
Thy words are mild and justly spake
Thou art no rover, thief, nor rake
From yonder castle I now here come
Twas thy sweet music which drew me from
Sing for me now, oh minstrel wise
With words of truth, no compromise
For I have traversed brack and briar
And take you for no lacklust liar

. . . and brushing past him, smelling lightly of Egyptian musk, she picks up the carafe of Kraffish Royoil and pours him another cuppa.

Holy Mudcats! you guys been busy while I was gone! Please pull me a pint of anything that's wet and malty. Whoooeee, that does hit the spot. Been gigging and it made my day. The "band" I play with is actually a non profit club, and every month we play at the local Care Center, pro bono. None of us ever really want to GO, but once we get there, its OK, sometimes great. Tonite was one of the great ones. I really did not want to GO; it's cold, I've been sick, excuses, excuses, but I went anyway. Made my day. All the folks were very lively tonite, and it was Birthday Party nite so we even got CAKE! I get tired, I get cranky, I don't want to practice, my fingers get sore, and then we get one like tonight and I remember why I play music in the first place. I do it to bring joy to others as well as myself. These folks in the nursing home have little enough to look forward to. The least I can do is help lighten their load for a few minutes once a month. Someday I may be there too, and I hope that someone will come in and bring me something I love when I can no longer play. Bless all with whatever blessings you believe in.
Off my soap box. I'm gonna drink this brew and go practice html on my very own notepad so I don't drive you all to nutso. Believe it or not, up until a few months ago I really thought that html was shorthand for "hotmail" (!!!)
I always intended to die computer illiterate; I said if God wanted me to be computer literate She would have put a socket in my head. Looks like She did, courtesy of Mudcat.
Slainte, Sorcha

(The first quote was a classic rakehell from the 17th Century, Herrick yclept.)
(Recites:)
My motives madam, thou mayst right easily know!
As pure throughout as white and blinding snow
N'e'er to bring thee nor strife nor fright
But for simple joy to bask a while
Within the radiance of thy smile
ANd thus to mine own soul bring delight!

Bowing again, he sits down abruptly on a barstool and grabs on to his coffee mug for stability.
A sweet aroma of Raffish Kroyeel fills the air.

Oh Lord Amos, you've got my head spinning and I haven't even had that LARGE mug of the black vile stuff yet. (That quote up above is a Gordon Bok ism, I do believe)

Now about those beer crackers. I make these wicked things with lots of butter and cumin and a bit of hot pepper (If you like the hot, you can increase it) and I bet they'd fill the bill. Hmmm, they'd probably ship if I auctioned them, but it might be easier to post the recipe. I'll track iit down. I'm cooking too darned much to do much exta. Though I did a party for our local folk series this past weekend. All of the volunteers got together and jammed and ate lots. What a blast! reminded me of this here tavern.

Hmmm, food, music and um scones. My my my, all of life's major pleasures.

What modus operandi hidden

Do touch my heart and be well bid
His voice is wondrous, liquid, fair
In admiration of my hair

It is none other than the charming Ann, who has refreshed herself and is no longer sticky, nor crumb covered. The mysterious gentleman in the corner sets down his Roffe Koyale and bows, sweeping back his loong cape. He recites:)

"A SWEET disorder in the dress
Kindles in clothes a wantonness:—
A lawn about the shoulders thrown
Into a fine distractiòn,—
... A cuff neglectful, and thereby
Ribbands to flow confusedly,—
A winning wave, deserving note,
In the tempestuous petticoat,—
A careless shoe-string, in whose tie
I see a wild civility,—
Do more bewitch me, than when art

Is too precise in every part."

Welcome, sweet coz! Share for to care a Roffee Kyale? A joy to see you.

I guess it was the talk about scones of stone above, but I just got to wondering: does anyone make a beer/ale equivalent of biscotti, the hard cookies you have to dip in coffee to eat? Someone of you culinary types ought to come up with a hard salty pastry that would be enhanced by dipping in Porters or Guiness or Green Death, and that would enhance the experience of imbibing the heavenly brews. They could be called Mudcat Munchies and sold--at first--via the auction; Muddies would be encouraged to introduce them at their favorite watering holes and they'd be bigger than McDonald's and Max could quit his day job and there would be peace on earth forever and ever, amen.

It's the royale,/i> part that gets you confused, Mario -- this here is a Damocracy -- goverment by the Dams. Or the damned, depending on how you spell it.

I can't parsley imagine world peas. But gimme some cafe royale and I'll conjure it up with one jicama imagination. Lettuce now be up and doing!
As for Mick being around, he's been around the pea-patch, and he's more around than he used to be for sure.
