First get the Phil Ochs ablum of your choice.
Humm the intro ad nosium.
Go to Ireland for most of your youth
learn to play the Uilleann pipes
Try and get a good set -See seth galaghers web site
match your humming to the humming of the chanter

Doesn't Phil just play through the melody once? (Perhaps my old memory is failing me.)

Hi Phil:
He does, in one or two recordings on the guitar, on one studio recording it is played on a sqeeky harmonica, sounding as if it is meant to sound like pipes,
It does sound nice on Uilleann pipes. He kind of picks it stacatto like...
Hey Joe! You named after our brother murdered by the State of Utah, Nov. 19, 1915?

My will is easy to decide
For there is nothing to divide
My kin dont need to fuss and moan
Moss does not cling to a rolling stone.
My body? Ah if I could choose,
I would to ashes it reduce
and let the merry breezes blow
my dust to where some flowers grow
Perhaps some fading flower then
would come to life and bloom again
this is my last and final will
Good luck to all of you, Joe Hill

Best of luck
larry

Hey Larry, have you heard Joe Hickerson's wonderful tune to "Joe Hill's Will"? 'Tis in my humble opinion a masterpiece.

Rick

If you are looking for the tabs to the guitar intro, I've included it in my tab collection. Click here for a direct link to the tab, in PDF format.

I'm not sure whether posting guitar tabs here is allowed or not... Sorry if the answer is "no"!

Phil Ochs started with a g chord shape. The individual stings he picked started with the B String on the third fret going to the B sting on the first fret to the open B string. Then he went to the G string and worked his way down never going past the second frets. When he starts the song he just plays the chords and does bass runs.

Did Ochs adapt the melody from something else? It sounds really familiar.
