I've only heard the Glendale Train mentioned in some versions of "Jesse James":
Jesse James was a man, and a robber in the land,
He robbed the Glendale Train.
He stole from the rich, and he gave to the poor,
He had a hand a heart and a brain.

Jesse had a wife who mourned for his life,
Three children they were brave.
But that dirty little coward who shot Mr. Howard
Has laid poor Jesse in his grave.

James, Bristol, RI

Do you mean the one that starts:

Somebody robbed the Glendale train This morning at half-past nine.

Somebody robbed the Glendale train And I swear I ain't lyin...

?

Maybe on vinyl by the Ozark Mountain Daredevils.

I'm pretty sure you are looking for the song JESSE JAMES.
The version I do is the American version although some friends of mine do other versions which very slightly with the words.
         G D7 G C G
Jesse James was a lad who killed many a man.
D7
He robbed the Glendale train.
G D7 G C G
He stole from the rich and gave to the poor.
A7 D7 G
He'd a hand and a heart and a brain.

G7 C Cm G
CHORUS: Poor Jesse had a wife to mourn for his life.
A7
Three children, they were brave;
D G D7 G C G
But that dirty little coward that shot Mr. Howard
A7 D7 G
Has laid poor Jesse in his grave.
It was Robert ford, that dirty little coward.
I wonder how he does feel,
For he ate of Jesse's bread and he slept in Jesse's bed,
Then laid poor Jesse in his grave.

Jesse was a man, a friend to the poor.
He'd never see a man suffer pain,
And with his brother Frank, he robbed the Chicago bank,
And stopped the Glendale train.

It was on a Saturday night, Jesse was at home,
Talking with his family brave.
Robert Ford came along like a thief in the night,
And laid poor Jesse in his grave.

This song was sung by Billy Gashade
As soon as the news did arrive.
He said there was no man with the law in his hand,
Could take poor Jesse James when alive.

The chorus starts with poor Jesse had a wife. It says a moderate tempo. We do it a little faster and people really like it. There are some of the D7 we delete that are transition chords- although that is not how it is written.

Dave Gunderson

I believe the song Crowhugger refers to is on a New Riders of the Purple Sage album.

There is indeed a song called "(The) Glendale Train", and the first two lines are what Crowhugger wrote.I'm sorry I don't know the song, but I've heard it many a time. It's a "three-chorder"--in the key of G, the chords would be G, C, and D (or D7). Fiddler 434, if you would like the specific chord sequence, say so and I'll get it for you. I'm afraid someone else will have to come up with the complete lyrics.

The first verse goes

Somebody robbed the Glendale Train, this morning half past nine
Somebody robbed the Glendale Train, I swear I ain't lyin'
They're making off with sixteen g's, left three men lying cold
Somebody robbed the Glendale Train and they made off with the gold

Second verse starts "Now Charley Jones was the engineer..."

LEJ,

Yes, yes, it was NRPS! I'll dig out the lyrics. Four chords, all of them basic if I don't start out in a borderline key.

Drift: New Riders and OMD live in the same time zone of my memory (is that a new song coming on...) and I mix 'em up fairly often. Thanks, LEJ.

Charlie Jones was the engineer, he had 20 years on the line,
He kissed his wife at the station gate, this morning at 6:35.
Every thing was fine until half-past nine, Charlie looked up and he saw,
There was men on hosses, men with guns, and no sign of the law.

Amos White was the baggage man, and he dearly loved his job.
The company rewarded Amos with a golden watch and fob.
Well, Amos he was marking time, when the door blew off of his car.
They found Amos White in fifteen pieces, fifteen miles apart.

Peter.

Yeah, right. Now if I could just get it through my head (maybe I'm one of those boneheads that that guy Al was so upset with) that "b" in pointy brackets means one thing, and "br" in pointy brackets means something else, I might begin to make sense....

Now the question: do the NRPS lyrics refer to an actual occurrence (the James train robbery)? Were Charlie and Amos historical figures?

Crowhugger: "Peter, I'm betting there's at least one bone in your head. Al who? ;-)"

Refer to the "BS: Give us a break" thread. He started it. Or did the smiley indicate you really knew that?

P.

From a Jesse James site

The Chicago & Alton Railroad Train was held up October 8, 1879 near Glendale, Missouri. The telegraph was disabled and the agent was ordered to stop the train. A backup plan was initiated, by stacking rocks on the rail if the train didn't stop.

The Express Car agent was roughed up but fortunately not shot. Originally the reports issued indicated there were fifteen to thirty robbers participated and monies liberated varied from $ 30,000.00 to $ 50,000.00. Later the railroad reported $ 6,000.00 monies and as few as five to eight men was more accurate.

It is amazing how many different songs can come out of just one. I wonder what the original version of the song we are all discussing is?? The lyrics I am looking for are similar to some that people have posted on this board. But the exact song I am looking for is called "Aimee Semple Mcpherson" by Pete Seeger. It is on an album called A Link in the Chain. Anybody else know which version I am talkin bout??
