Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eileen Òg From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 18 Feb 00 - 07:51 PM But I can't say I put too much stock on the advice in the song, regardless of my name. But I've always thought the tiune is a lot like Ra-Ra-Rasputin" - or the other ways around.
I've always fancied there could be a song about a fierce sort of a girl called "Eileen Ogre". It might be the sequel even. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eileen Òg From: Midchuck Date: 19 Feb 00 - 10:30 AM Anyone else old enough to remember Ian and Sylvia doing this on their very first album ('63 or thenabouts), under the title of "The Pride of Petrovar" (sic)? We perform it, in a version that is very derivative of theirs, but no one's called us on it yet, because no one else remembers it(?) Peter. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eileen Og From: GUEST,Dáithí Date: 17 Mar 11 - 05:36 AM This old Percy French song is one of my favourites - maybe a tad cheesy, but still agreat tune! You can find a performance of the Dubliners singing it on Youtube. D |
Subject: Lyr Add: EILEEN OG / PRIDE OF PETRAVORE From: RunrigFan Date: 17 Mar 11 - 06:22 AM Eileen Og an' that the darlin's name is Through the Barony her features they were famous If we loved her then who was there to blame us For wasn't she the Pride of Petravore? But her beauty made us all so shy Not a man could look her in the eye Boys, Oh boys, sure that's the reason why We're in mournin' for the Pride of Petravore Eileen Og me heart is growin' grey Ever since the day you wandered far away Eileen Og there's good fish in the say But there's none of them like the Pride of Petravore Friday at the fair of Ballintubber Eileen met McGrath the cattle jobber I'd like to set me mark upon the robber For he stole away the Pride of Petravore He never seemed to see the girl at all Even when she ogled him from underneath her shawl Lookin' big and masterful when she was lookin' small Most provokin' for the Pride of Petravore Eileen Og me heart is growin' grey Ever since the day you wandered far away Eileen Og there's good fish in the say But there's none of them like the Pride of Petravore So it went as 'twas in the beginning Eileen Og was bent upon the winning Big McGrath contentedly was grinning Being courted by the Pride of Petravore Sez he: "I know a girl that could knock you into fits" At that Eileen nearly lost her wits The upshot of the ruction was that now the robber sits With his arm around the Pride of Petravore Eileen Og me heart is growin' grey Ever since the day you wandered far away Eileen Og there's good fish in the say But there's none of them like the Pride of Petravore Boys, Oh boys, with fate 'tis hard to grapple Of my eyes 'tis Eileen was the apple Now to see her walkin' to the chapel With the hardest featured man in Petravore Now, boys, this is all I have to say: When you do your courtin' make no display If you want them to run after you, just walk the other way For they're mostly like the Pride of Petravore Eileen Og me heart is growin' grey Ever since the day you wandered far away Eileen Og there's good fish in the say But there's none of them like the Pride of Petravore |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eileen Og From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 17 Mar 11 - 10:56 AM Thanks for bringing this up. I couldn't use the Mudcat MIDI (how do you time a note with three crossbars on it?) so I went to JC's Tunefinder and found a delightful version. We'll play it at our annual St Patrick's Day party. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Eileen Og / Pride of Petravore From: Tattie Bogle Date: 31 Jan 22 - 07:00 PM One of our Zoom instrumental sessioneers played the tune for this today: not sure if he knew it was a song as well! I later sent back the lyrics and a video of Cathy Jordan of Dervish singing it: super stuff! The Pride of Petravore |
