Thanks so much for such great info and links on "Threads on the Singing Voice." The links to the Center For Voice Disorders of Wake Forest University were especially informative. I have multiple sclerosis which has effected my speech and singing, and have never found a doctor (or speech therapist) which understood my comments or questions concerning the entire speech process. Musicians seem to have a way of communicating ideas in ways that are very easy for me to understand...and it always surprises me when nonmusicians don't "follow" what I'm asking or saying. Singers often describe "breathiness" (as when the vocal chords don't close), or breathing from the diaphram to have lots of air, or strengthening various muscles in order to control air and coordination, or relaaaaaaaaxxxxxxxing, or letting the sound waves resonate in all the sinuses, etc, etc.

Oh well, thanks for lots of reading material.

You're welcome, Mary. My voice teacher started performing in opera when she was a teenager. Her degrees in music include a doctorate in recitative, as well as master's degree in music therapy and other studies. (Suzanne Gorder) When I met her, there was no way I could have known that at one time, while working in Europe, she had a stroke after exposure to a cleaning chemical. The doctors told her she would never sing again. When she was in the hospital, she hummed and could hear sound from her vocal cords. She knew that if she could hum, she could some day regain her voice and sing again. I never could have guessed that she had been that ill. She worked at regaining control of her muscles and went on with her professional career.
