The tune he sings is Buckin' Mule and the words are part of other versions of Buckin' Mule as done by the Dillards. The did not want that name on TV family entertainment -- changed due to similarities to another word you could not say on TV. Because of this rather excessive bawdlerism, a lot of people do not know the real "flop-eared mule" fiddle tune. I is another fine example of an internet riot. I'm guessing Holy Modal invented their lyrics. However, in Holy Modal lyrics, the first line on the record goes "Mule,mule,mule, mule, funny little flop-eared mule". |

The great majority of them were instrumentals. But then there was this version by the Holy Modal Rounders:
Flop-eared mule, flop-eared mule, flop-eared, flop-eared mule. Mule, mule, mule, mule, flop-eared, flop-eared, flop-eared mule. Mule, mule, mule, mule, flop-eared, flop-eared mule. And this version by a band called Doodoo Wah, on a CD called "For Amusement Only," Ballum Rancum CD #4, 1996:
Corned-beef hash, corned-beef hash, corned-beef, corned-beef hash. Hash, hash, hash, hash, corned-beef, corned-beef, corned-beef hash. Hash, hash, hash, hash, corned-beef, corned-beef hash. For those who want to compose their own verses, it seems the rule is: You need a 3-syllable phrase, of which the first 2 syllables are an adjective or adjective phrase, and the 3rd syllable is a noun. Only Andy Griffith seems to sing "real" words, but then he has a different tune also (on "Favorite Old-Time Songs," Madacy CD #3130, 2000):

It has a few comic exchanges in the style of 'Arkansas Traveller', but it is Robinette's glorious fiddling that stands out. Seven of Robinette and Moore's eight recordings in 1929 are included on volume 2 of Document's complete recordings of Grayson and Whitter - DOCD 8055. --Stewie. |

It seems that Shade drove that mule with curses (that's right, children, in the days before phone sex men would go out and talk dirty to the mules). On this particular day, the mule was unusually cooperative and Shade was making good time. Suddenly, the plow blade snagged a rock and Shade pitched forward...at the precise instant that the mule lived up to its nickname. I wasn't there, but I believe the story to be true. Maybe Cletus can vouch for it. As for Flop-Eared Mule, a happy tune with or without words. |
