Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Flop-Eared Mule From: GUEST Date: 10 Feb 21 - 07:44 PM I suspect Griffith got the name wrong for his tune probably on purpose. The tune he sings is Buckin' Mule and the words are part of other versions of Buckin' Mule as done by the Dillards. The did not want that name on TV family entertainment -- changed due to similarities to another word you could not say on TV. Because of this rather excessive bawdlerism, a lot of people do not know the real "flop-eared mule" fiddle tune. I is another fine example of an internet riot. I'm guessing Holy Modal invented their lyrics. However, in Holy Modal lyrics, the first line on the record goes "Mule, mule, mule, mule, funny little flop-eared mule". |
Subject: Lyr Add: FLOP-EARED MULE (from Andy Griffith) From: Jim Dixon Date: 29 May 13 - 11:14 PM FLOP-EARED MULE As sung by Andy Griffith on "American Originals" I used to have a ol' banjo was all strung up with twine, And the only song you could hear me sing was "I wish that gal was mine" Well, I wish that gal was mine, boys, I wish that gal was mine, And the only song you could hear me sing was "I wish that gal was mine." Whoa, mule, you kickin' mule, whoa, mule, I say. I ain't got time to kiss you now; my mule is runnin' away I took my wife to the barnyard 'n' I set her down to supper. Well, she got choked on a turkey leg and stuck her nose in the butter, Stuck her nose in the butter, stuck her nose in the butter. Well, she got choked on a turkey leg and stuck her nose in the butter. Whoa, mule, you kickin' mule, whoa, mule, I say. Tie a knot in that old mule's tail before he runs away. Your face is like a coffeepot; your nose is like a spout. Your mouth is like a fireplace with all the ashes out, Well, with all the ashes out, boys, with all the ashes out. Your mouth is like a fireplace with all the ashes out. Whoa, mule, you kickin' mule, whoa, mule, I say. I ain't got time to kiss you now; my mule is runnin' away. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Flop-Eared Mule From: Jack Campin Date: 05 Oct 10 - 09:10 AM The Bluebell Polka is usually played as 5 parts, three of them the same - key sequence G D G C G. Kerr's Merry Melodies book 1 (which has the Bluebell Polka, almost exactly as Jimmy Shnad played it) has been continuously in print since the 1870s. It must be the best-selling tunebook in the British Isles. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Flop-Eared Mule From: Mr Happy Date: 05 Oct 10 - 08:16 AM Aha! I found the name of the other tune, it's from Scotland & called 'The Bluebell Polka'. Seems to be a 3 part tune, I'd be interested to know if anyone's an inkling of which of these tunes came first, as IMO one is clearly derived from the other. Here's a soundbite from JC's of Bluebell, as a guidehttp://trillian.mit.edu/~jc/cgi/abc/tuneget?F=MIDI&U=http://www2.redhawk.org:8080/irish/RRTuneBk/RRtunes/RRtunes.abc&X=405&T=BLU Click on midi to listen |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Flop-Eared Mule From: GUEST,Al Date: 08 Jul 02 - 01:06 AM Well, Susan, it sure fits the tune the way I play it on the fiddle. And by the way, if you're playing in D, then a good way to imitate the mule on the fiddle at the beginning of the first part of the tune is to slide an A note down to a G on the low G string, then pop the bow up to an F# on the E string, then D on the A string. Subject: Lyr Add: FLOP-EARED MULE From: Jim Dixon Date: 06 Jul 02 - 03:11 PM I thought this whole thread was a big leg-pull, so I checked it out by listening to as many sound samples as I could find on CDNOW. The great majority of them were instrumentals. But then there was this version by the Holy Modal Rounders:
Flop-eared mule, flop-eared mule, flop-eared, flop-eared mule. Mule, mule, mule, mule, flop-eared, flop-eared, flop-eared mule. Mule, mule, mule, mule, flop-eared, flop-eared mule. And this version by a band called Doodoo Wah, on a CD called "For Amusement Only," Ballum Rancum CD #4, 1996:
Corned-beef hash, corned-beef hash, corned-beef, corned-beef hash. Hash, hash, hash, hash, corned-beef, corned-beef, corned-beef hash. Hash, hash, hash, hash, corned-beef, corned-beef hash. For those who want to compose their own verses, it seems the rule is: You need a 3-syllable phrase, of which the first 2 syllables are an adjective or adjective phrase, and the 3rd syllable is a noun. Only Andy Griffith seems to sing "real" words, but then he has a different tune also (on "Favorite Old-Time Songs," Madacy CD #3130, 2000):
Well, she got choked on a turkey leg and stuck her nose in the butter, Stuck her nose in the butter, stuck her nose in the butter. Well, she got choked on a turkey leg and stuck her nose in the butter. Whoa, mule, you kickin' mule. Whoa, mule, I say. Tie a knot in that old mule's tail 'fore he runs away. I don't know where his version comes from, but it's not the same as Kickin' Mule either.

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Flop-Eared Mule From: Stewie Date: 22 Feb 00 - 06:38 PM Recently, the Document label reissued on CD one of the earliest and best recordings of 'Flop-eared Mule'- a 1929 recording with Melvin Robinette on fiddle and Byrd Moore on guitar. It has a few comic exchanges in the style of 'Arkansas Traveller', but it is Robinette's glorious fiddling that stands out. Seven of Robinette and Moore's eight recordings in 1929 are included on volume 2 of Document's complete recordings of Grayson and Whitter - DOCD 8055. --Stewie. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Flop-Eared Mule From: Pinetop Slim Date: 22 Feb 00 - 06:36 PM Break for a story: When Uncle Shade was ready to plow the charlie field with the family mule, known as Fartin' Betsy, a warning would go 'round that the women and children should find better places to be that day. It seems that Shade drove that mule with curses (that's right, children, in the days before phone sex men would go out and talk dirty to the mules). On this particular day, the mule was unusually cooperative and Shade was making good time. Suddenly, the plow blade snagged a rock and Shade pitched forward...at the precise instant that the mule lived up to its nickname. I wasn't there, but I believe the story to be true. Maybe Cletus can vouch for it. As for Flop-Eared Mule, a happy tune with or without words. |
