You have been pointed towards Frances Coakley's web site, where the first and third refer to 'national songs', sometimes based (and then only loosely) on traditional material. The second page is from the A W Moore collection of traditional material.

Unfortunately, I don't know whether you have a guide to pronouncing Manx - its orthography disguises its connections with Irish and Scottish Gaelic.

However, there were versions of the traditional songs rendered into singable English versions, but needless to say they aren't online or even generally available these days.

No, I'm a liar. Having said all that, the Douglas Kennedy 'Folksongs of the British Isles' (I think that's the title) has a section with Manx songs in, with singable English versions by Mona Douglas.

And finally, the reason for pulling this up again is that I did attempt to reply some time ago, hit a problem and have just got round to doing so again. Sorry about that. Get in touch through here or by e-mail if you want any info.

Shoh slaynt,

Bobby Bob

Not only a liar, but a half-wit too. As my associate, BigJ, pointed out (we take hot Bovril together in a health spar not far from our respective doorsteps), my reference should have been to Peter Kennedy,

There's lots more ignorance where that came from.

Mish, lesh red ennagh,

Bobby Bob

Bobby Bob--Since when did BigJ take to drinking Bovril! My God! Bushy's will close down and stock in Guiness will take a nose-dive if word of this ever gets out. Health spa indeed!

Talk to or listen to Emma Christian - beautiful, etherial and Manx. Of course, I may have got the wrong Emma, in which case, I'm sorry, but there is a Manx harpist and singer, called Emma, who is beautiful and etherial and sings in Manx Gaelic. I'm too cold to go downstairs and look for her CD, and I'm too far into the drink to remember....

Liz, you're right it's Emma Christian (fairly recently a student at U of Cambridge, as I recall). Don't really agree with your appraisal of her performance, though - it's certainly pleasant enough, but has far TOO much of the "classical musician discovering her cultural roots" feel of RESPECT! She needs to let the music speak for itself rather more . .

G.

Actually, I've tried to join up on more than one occasion, but for some reason it doesn't seem to stick.

I'm sure you'll find on occasion I've posted something without being GUEST, but lately I seem to have dropped out of favour!

Is there someone out there trying to tell me something . . .?

Mish, as yindys orrym,

Bobby Bob

Just to advise about Emma Christian.

There's an ancient title given to old-established landowners in the Isle of Man, and it's 'Captain of the Parish'. It used to carry a number of duties, but these days is largely honorific.

Emma's father, William Daniel Christian, is Captain of the Parish of Kirk Bride, and his father, also William Daniel Christian, was Captain of the Parish before him. The Christian family have been farming Ballakeigh in Kirk Bride since before the end of the sixteenth century.

Emma herself used to take part in Yn Chruinnaght, a festival of Manx traditional material, when she was a youngster.

Because of her musical ability, she was sent to Chethams School in Manchester, which specialises in music, at the age of about 13.

Her playing these days no doubt reflects her training at that time.

Shoh slaynt,

Bobby Bob

Hi

I'm just refreshing this thread, and including a link to the Manx Music Thread because I've just added a New temporary section in the Basic Folk Library on my website (eventually it will go into a subsection "COUNTRIES / Man".

If anyone can recommend any books etc. not already there and not in this or the Manx Music thread, could you let me know?

Thanks!
Ian

Thanks chaps. I've already got that. There's also a new COUNTRIES/Man section on my website now with a few books (mostly republished online) which might be of interest!

Cheers!
Ian
