I know that good singing and great lyrics are what draw all of us to folk music. But what about the poor benighted souls who want some sex appeal in their performers? Who can we point to and say, va va va voom, there is a sexy folk singer? Both male and female suggestions, please, and exactly what you find sexy about them. Keep it clean, though. I want my kids to be able to read this.

Sexiest folksinger? I thought that if a folksinger showed the slightest sign of sex appeal he or she was immediately boxed up and sent off to the nearest commercial studio. A conversation a friend and I had comparing the sex appeal of many of the performers at The Festival of Friends in Hamilton was pre-empted by the young man in the audience in front of us who stood up, removed his shorts, revealed his BRIGHT LIME GREEN nylon underwear, and put on a pair of trousers. I hope he was warmer for it, I know my friend and I were.

I know scads of women who swoon over Jeff Warner and Jeff Davis. It's the charisma. They must exude buckets of pheremones.

Karan Casey has a lot of appeal for men I know, and my husband just adores Ellen Cohn. :-)

I'll probably be branded as a weirdo for saying this, but what I find very attractive in a performer is his/her total immersion in the music. When they practically make love to the song...mmmm-mmmm. Physical attributes pale in comparison. So by example, Michael Ducet, when he is dancing with his fiddle, is pretty irresistable.

I think I just care more about the music. Dolores O'Riordan had it right when she used to play with her back to the audience. She wanted people to concentrate on the music, and not what SHE looked like. Anyone can look good, and I believe that the music and how much of yourself you put into it is more important that physical appearance. But hey, that's just me.

I think the sexiest folk singer to me is local and is unkown - I used to really fancy her. So I vote for Anwen Donovan. She also has a superb voice and is an excellent anglo concertina player. I often wonder why she never became a "name" as IMO, she has more than enough musical tallent for that.

Rod Patterson looks as good as he sings (or at least he did several years back), and I'm surprised no one mentioned him. But looks aren't everything. Sometimes it's the way their hands move when they play that harp (or whatever)like they're making love to it. And if you're going to be strict on singers, definitely it's the ones who sing so that the feeling in the heart really comes out... I've seen musicians who didn't look like much transform completely when under the influence (of the music)... I think that's true whether the observer is male or female-- we mostly respond to something that's deeper than surface considerations--though they are definitely an asset.

PS., Someone mentioned above that the sexiest folks may be someone who's pretty much unknown.  My vote would be for a guy named Doug who lives in Seattle, plays 12-string and autoharp (both beautifully), is about 6'2" or so, sounds like Marty Robbins, does a lot of Kate Wolf songs, and is gorgeous.  I'd wager you folks probably know a few unknown folksingers in your local communities who'd also get lots of votes if they were more widely known.
