Subject: Sexiest Folksingers Alive From: High and Lonesome Date: 06 Mar 00 - 02:30 AM I know that good singing and great lyrics are what draw all of us to folk music. But what about the poor benighted souls who want some sex appeal in their performers? Who can we point to and say, va va va voom, there is a sexy folk singer? Both male and female suggestions, please, and exactly what you find sexy about them. Keep it clean, though. I want my kids to be able to read this. |
Subject: RE: Sexiest Folksingers Alive From: Joe Offer Date: 06 Mar 00 - 02:37 AM Well, Iris Dement has the most expressive eyebrows I've ever seen. She must be able to move them a full two inches up and down. Sings darn well, too. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Sexiest Folksingers Alive From: Alan of Australia Date: 06 Mar 00 - 08:43 AM Well, if it wasn't for The Bonny Irish Lass aka the FAIR ONE I'd have said that "sexy folksinger" was an oxymoron. Although the same young lady said she liked the way Andy M Stewart wiggled his hips at the Blue Mountains Folk Festival at the weekend!

Subject: RE: Sexiest Folksingers Alive From: sophocleese Date: 06 Mar 00 - 09:34 AM Sexiest folksinger? I thought that if a folksinger showed the slightest sign of sex appeal he or she was immediately boxed up and sent off to the nearest commercial studio. A conversation a friend and I had comparing the sex appeal of many of the performers at The Festival of Friends in Hamilton was pre-empted by the young man in the audience in front of us who stood up, removed his shorts, revealed his BRIGHT LIME GREEN nylon underwear, and put on a pair of trousers. I hope he was warmer for it, I know my friend and I were. |

Subject: RE: Sexiest Folksingers Alive From: Pelrad Date: 06 Mar 00 - 11:23 AM I know scads of women who swoon over Jeff Warner and Jeff Davis. It's the charisma. They must exude buckets of pheremones. Karan Casey has a lot of appeal for men I know, and my husband just adores Ellen Cohn. :-) I'll probably be branded as a weirdo for saying this, but what I find very attractive in a performer is his/her total immersion in the music. When they practically make love to the song...mmmm-mmmm. Physical attributes pale in comparison. So by example, Michael Ducet, when he is dancing with his fiddle, is pretty irresistable. |

Subject: RE: Sexiest Folksingers Alive From: Mbo Date: 06 Mar 00 - 12:34 PM I think I just care more about the music. Dolores O'Riordan had it right when she used to play with her back to the audience. She wanted people to concentrate on the music, and not what SHE looked like. Anyone can look good, and I believe that the music and how much of yourself you put into it is more important that physical appearance. But hey, that's just me. --Mbo |

Subject: RE: Sexiest Folksingers Alive From: Lonesome EJ Date: 06 Mar 00 - 05:06 PM Yep, in 1973 I was captured by a wandering gang of Biker Women. So there. |
Subject: RE: Sexiest Folksingers Alive From: Jon Freeman Date: 06 Mar 00 - 06:12 PM I think the sexiest folk singer to me is local and is unkown - I used to really fancy her. As for J.Davis, **SIGH** ;-) Women seem to be attracted to either one or the other; it was so nice when they were performing together. Besides the fabulous musical and historical content of course... Mbo: It's nothing personal, darling. I happen to have very handsome brothers, so it was not my intent to insult you in saying that you look too much like one of them. Subject: RE: Sexiest Folksingers Alive From: Clinton Hammond Date: 04 Feb 02 - 05:54 PM James Taylor looks like he should be a high school shop teacher... Or a computer nerd.... |
Subject: RE: Sexiest Folksingers Alive From: Murray MacLeod Date: 04 Feb 02 - 06:06 PM James Taylor looked pretty cool in his younger days. Check him out in "Two Lane Blacktop" my favorite bad movie of all time. Nowadays of course, he is as follically challenged as everybody else of a similar age, and doesn't carry quite the same aura of brooding intensity which made him sexy, I assume. Murray |
Subject: RE: Sexiest Folksingers Alive From: kidd Date: 04 Feb 02 - 06:13 PM Ooh! Clinton Hammond? And what do you look like you should be? |

Subject: RE: Sexiest Folksingers Alive From: Dave Bryant Date: 05 Feb 02 - 05:23 AM If this question had been asked 20 years ago, there would have been lots of UK women voting for Charley Yarwood. Still as I'm male and hetero, I'd vote for a young Shirley Collins. If you preferred dark-haired ladies to blondes, there was always her sister Dolly. |
Subject: RE: Sexiest Folksingers Alive From: GUEST Date: 05 Feb 02 - 09:15 AM I used to think Eliza Carthy was sexy. Then she started singing about giving blowjobs to men that she didn't even like. Now I assume that she must have had one fucked up childhood.

Subject: RE: Sexiest Folksingers Alive From: Skipper Jack Date: 05 Feb 02 - 10:45 AM I'm surprised that no-one spotted a mistake in the name of my sexiest folk singer. It should have read: Carolanne Pegg. Judging by the masses of messages that weren't posted I daresay nobody's ever heard of her? |

Subject: RE: Sexiest Folksingers Alive From: Nemesis Date: 08 Feb 02 - 07:26 PM Not strictly folk I suppose but I fell in love with Martyn Joseph last Saturday night and he was on stage with Steve Knightley (so 2 for the price of one) :) www.faithfolkanarchy.com But, then again I fell i love with Chris Smither at Sidmouth last year - Yippee he's coming to town in March (UK)! Although - long term infatuation would have to be Richard Thompson: the Sean Connery of Folk as far as I'm concerned! |

Subject: RE: Sexiest Folksingers Alive From: GUEST,jennifer thorp Date: 20 Oct 02 - 09:47 AM Can't believe John Kirkpatrick only got one vote in this - somewhere between Mick Jagger and Elvis Presley but with a melodeon on the front - prowling onto the stage and leaping onto the first tune like a lithe, reckless leopard with a shout of "GO!" (Don't anyone tell John Tams I've just demoted him) Jennifer |

Subject: RE: Sexiest Folksingers Alive From: Bearheart Date: 20 Oct 02 - 07:44 PM Rod Patterson looks as good as he sings (or at least he did several years back), and I'm surprised no one mentioned him. But looks aren't everything. Sometimes it's the way their hands move when they play that harp (or whatever)like they're making love to it. And if you're going to be strict on singers, definitely it's the ones who sing so that the feeling in the heart really comes out... I've seen musicians who didn't look like much transform completely when under the influence (of the music)... I think that's true whether the observer is male or female-- we mostly respond to something that's deeper than surface considerations--though they are definitely an asset. Bekki |
Subject: RE: Sexiest Folksingers Alive From: Cubs Date: 20 Oct 02 - 08:39 PM Emmylou Harris is one of the sexiest people on the planet. As other types of music and other eras have been introduced into the discussion, Amy Grant and Bonnie Raitt. One of the very interesting things about each of those ladies and most singers of folk or country songs who also play guitar is their arms. Waifs cannot cut it. Great legs are nice. Great arms are nicer. |

Subject: RE: Sexiest Folksingers Alive From: Hecate Date: 21 Oct 02 - 09:42 AM Paul Hoad from Suntrap. not helped by his habit of introducing one of his songs by saying it was inspired by him cycling through the rain in London, wearing only a pair of cycling shorts! |

Subject: RE: Sexiest Folksingers Alive From: Hecate Date: 21 Oct 02 - 09:54 AM that`s `not helped` in the sense of me being reduced to a quivering wreck! I gather that the two lassies in said group - Mary and Sarah, are very popular with the blokes. Subject: RE: Sexiest Folksingers Alive From: bflat Date: 21 Oct 02 - 11:05 AM I agree with sharyn. Chris Smither is a hottie--great smile, strong features; smart; very talented and easy on the eyes! A Killin' The Blues kinda guy. Ellen |

Subject: RE: Sexiest Folksingers Alive From: Genie Date: 21 Oct 02 - 01:48 PM men: the late John Hartford Leonard Cohen ...and, of course, Murray MacLeod! ¤;-D for women (in addition to Emmylou, Joan, Tish, etc.: And of the Mudcatters I've seen pictured, I'd say Carol C. (now "Carol The Sailor?") would be right up there. Genie PS., Someone mentioned above that the sexiest folks may be someone who's pretty much unknown. My vote would be for a guy named Doug who lives in Seattle, plays 12-string and autoharp (both beautifully), is about 6'2" or so, sounds like Marty Robbins, does a lot of Kate Wolf songs, and is gorgeous. I'd wager you folks probably know a few unknown folksingers in your local communities who'd also get lots of votes if they were more widely known. |
Subject: RE: Sexiest Folksingers Alive From: sharyn Date: 21 Oct 02 - 03:00 PM I forgot to mention Leonard Cohen (but someone else did). I ushered for one of his concerts once, stood ten feet away from him. The man exudes presence. Otherwise same criteria as for Chris Smither: self-deprecating humor, intelligence. In the same category: Richard Thompson |
