The three of us will be joining together with another one of my best friends to play at a church coffeehouse in a town just outside of Cincinnatti. The gig is at 8 pm on Friday, April 14th at Christ Presbyterian Church, 5657 Pleasant View Drive, Milford, Ohio. "Don't miss it if you can!"

I'm sorry. Now that I know another meaning for gig I'm having difficulty reading this thread title without giggling. I get a bizarre mixture of images from Norse tales about three women sharing an eye and then I get this image of these sharing a gig. Wish I could see it, actually maybe not....

Well I'm looking forward to this. Allan sent me a group sing list of old familiars which I realized I haven't sung most of in ages. But I'm looking forward to meeting Allan and his friends and I'm sure a good time will be had...except for the part where they have to listen to me sing. Gotta' go check the net for a good buy on earplugs in bulk.

Seriously, I expect a fun and companionable evening. I've heard so many great things about Allan's abilities and I've enjoyed his warmth and friendship here for so long. that this will certainly be a memorable evening for me.

Hey 'spaw, you may have to accompany these guys in May and June on their great adventure. I told Allan C that in return for a lumpy hard bed and some meager leftover food, they would have to entertain us non-stop for at least 6 hours. Allan tried to sell me a story about how they haven't done much together, and how they are quite modestly talented. I don't believe a word of it!
Teach them well, 'spaw. Learn them some songs. Give them a robust stage presence. If they can't pay for their keep, I'll be looking for you.

Have fun guys at your gig. Wishin' I, too, could be there. Be sure to report back to the 'cat afterwards.

And I'd love to see that play list...

Whyn't you all come out to Oakland on Easter weekend and join me, El Swanno, Winter's Wages, et al, for a singaround?

Break a leg, fellers. I would love to be in the audience, casting mooney eyes at the boys in the band...

Best, WyoWoman

Yeah, Patsclaw: what's on the list? We (the Once Born Gospel Singers) did a gig at Sally's convalescent home last Monday night--and Sally played her autoharp--for about 10-15 residents, a half-dozen staff, and a bunch of our friends--. And next Monday night we are playing at Sally's house for the first time in five months: she's going home tomorrow! She'll still be in a wheelchair most of the time at first, but she has walked as far as 160 feet using her walker, and the progress is continuing apace.

Oh, Pat--the list: our usual set list doesn't contain many of the songs I learned growing up, and I had a feeling that not many of our audience knew many of our songs, but they did seem to enjoy it. But it would be nice if we could add a few old timeys from somewhere other than Appalachia. Also, an awful lot of our repertoire seems to be spirituals about going to heaven...

And Wyo, I'll be at chez-Swannae, and--I'm sure--so will RiGGy--like Winter's Wages a concertina player.

Kelida, if there is a cover charge, I am not aware of it. But if there is, don't worry, I'll take care of it. I know the guy whose place it is;-)

As for the gig list, I don't know what Catspaw might play. He says he is leaving the dulcimers at home and only bringing the guitar;-( David C. and I have managed to put together a few songs we might do:

Walking Down This Road To My Town
When We Were Very Young
Drinking Gourd
The Water Is Wide
My Sweetheart's A Mule In the Mines
Seven Golden Daffodils
One More Town
Colorado Trail

But anything can happen and we might end up with something else entirely. David will be playing dobro, guitar, and mouthharp along with me. (And yes, sometimes it seems as if he plays all of these at the same time!)

My friend Jim who is pastor at that church will be doing

All the Good People
The Ash Grove
and a few other songs. He will be performing with his wife, Kathleen who has a fabulous soprano voice.

kat, folk1234, WW, and Bert (who wanted to be a fly on the wall) and all others who would have liked to have been there, just know that we wish you were able to be there as well and very much appreciate the good wishes. We will try to tape what we can of the show. I had planned to try out my new mini-disc recorder but it stayed on backorder so long that I canceled. So - back to the tape recorder!

David and I leave for Cincinnati this evening. We promise to give you a full report when we return.

I got an e-mail from Jim with directions and I'll be leaving here as soon as I can tomorrow, probably about noon or so. Playlist? Well.....Hope I can think of something by then. Actually, I think I'll take a shot at a few current favorites:

I Ain't Got No Home--Woody
The Man That Is Me--Jim Croce
Many Times Before--Pat Sky
Fa-Sol-La--Shelly Posen
Prayer in D--Emmylou

Or as Allan said, maybe none of the above. I'm looking forward to meeting Allan after all this time and the many great things I've heard about him.

SEED---I'm so glad to hear about Sally. Pass on the good wishes from all of us here at the 'Cat huh?

I promised a full report and here it is:

I am sad to say that I received a phone call from Catspaw on Friday through which I learned that he and virtually his whole family was being afflicted by the flu. In short, he was unable to attend the gig. I can barely express my disappointment. David C. and I had been quite excited about our meeting 'Spaw at last. However, these things happen in real life. 'Spaw said that he would try to catch up with us at some point during our travels in June. That will be so very cool!

Kelida and a good friend of hers arrived at the show just as the first group was cranking up. Both Kelida and friend were as charming and friendly as Kelida appears to be here in the forum. At my request the two of them made good use of my tiny tape recorder and my camera.

At the appointed time, the first group - a contra band - vacated the stage and it was our turn.

I should mention that P.J., the sound man for this event, was the son of my friend, Jim, who is pastor of the church where the show was being held. P.J. did a remarkable job of miking David C. and me. He adjusted the sound mix beautifully and then cranked up the volume as loud as he dared. Despite his efforts, he was unable to conquer the din of the crowd of some fifty people who seemed intent upon raising the volume of their talking to counteract P.J.'s efforts to make us heard.

David C. and I thought that perhaps after our first song the crowd would realize that we were something more than background music. By and large, this was not the case. There were perhaps ten people among them who appeared to be attempting to quietly listen to us. The rest continued their chatter.

We continued playing our set. We cut it short by a couple of songs because we were not enjoying ourselves at all. I feel certain that there are other performers who might have just packed up and left. - Believe me, the thought crossed both of our minds. However, we had driven more than 450 miles to be there as a favor to my friend, Jim. So we did our best to put on a show for the few who were listening - among whom were Kelida and her friend.

Although I blew a chord change or two, I felt that we made a good showing. Perhaps Kelida will give a more impartial evaluation. Except for a couple of songs I sang for a group of my co-workers at a Christmas show, this was the first time I had been on stage in about fifteen years or so. This was yet another reason why it was important (for me) to finish the set.

David C. did an outstanding job on the dobro and the mouth harp and made it all sound far better than I could have imagined. I say this after having heard the tape recording that Kelida made of our set. And, what I could hear through all of the talking sounded even better than I had hoped for.

All things considered, including that David C. and I have only been able to get together about seven times to practice for this event, we did okay (in my humble estimation).

And now to express my gratitude:
I am grateful to my friend, Jim for giving David C. and me an opportunity to be on stage and to P.J. for all he did. I am grateful to Kelida and her friend for having come to see us. I am grateful and a bit relieved that 'Spaw was unable to attend. I would have been embarrassed to have invited him to a show where he would have to try to play for such a crowd. My thanks to all of you for your encouraging remarks. And I am grateful to David C. for having stuck by me throughout the set and through the twenty-some hours of driving time to get there and back.

Hi Allan........Well we all still have it. The kids are better and I am too, but Karen is really under it. I'm sorry too that we didn't get the chance that we all have been looking forward to so much, but we will work it out somehow this summer.

Kelida posted another thread and I'll go find it and pull it up for you. They seemed to have had a good time.

Sorry about the crowd, but things like that happen even under the best of circumstances I suppose. A few years ago I was asked to play a few at the foster parent dinner and I was among many friends. But their interest that night was obviously elsewhere and instead, I got them into a group sing that worked out better and also allowed me to do two at the end that they actually paid attention to (and I think enjoyed). Sorry it was a bad night, but I'd like to have been there anyway!!!

Hope your trip back was OK and you don't think too porrly of us 'Ahiaians'..........

Talk to you soon.

Spaw

Don't ever forget that even in a crowd like that, there is usually at least one person who is listening more attentively than you can imagine, and whose whole life is changing while that happens. And who will change lives forever herself or himself with what was received from you.... which is just whatever you'd received before that gig...

Get out there and play again.... it's always worth it!

Praise, 'Spaw, I am not discouraged, only disappointed. We will happily play again somewhere, sometime. It was just a tough room and I lacked the experience to do what was needed to crack it. I am fine now and ready to do another show whenever the opportunity appears.

And I totally agree about singing for the someone who is listening harder than one might imagine. It is just a little difficult to philosophize while looking out into an audience which, for the most part, gave the appearance of not giving a hoot whether we were there or not. (And that is putting it VERY kindly!) However, we put on the best show we were able to under those conditions.

Back again after supper...........I was wondering beforehand and I just talked with Karen about it, but do you suppose the "order" of things might have made a difference? The Contra Band (contraband?) that performed first would have easily gotten the crowd into a "Pub" mood/mode. Perhaps if you had been first, it may have gone better.

But anyway, I'm still sorry to have missed you and I'm glad you're ready to "hit it again."

Yes, 'Spaw, I think the order had a bit to do with it. And David C. and I thought that after the first song, the crowd would realize that what was on stage was no longer background music. Looking back, I think it might have been helpful if I had simply grabbed the mike, walked to the apron of the stage and just stood there until everyone stopped talking. Then I could have said "Thank you", hung the mike back on the stand and begun playing. Next time...

P.S. Thanks, 'Spaw, for refreshing the other thread.

Erica and I had a great time, although she does still complain that I refused to expose my woeful lack of dancing skills. The crowd was a bit rude, though, and that was my biggest worry about the recording--too much talking, too little music--though I do hope that was not the case. Erica was glad that I dragged her along, even though she was a bit skeptical at first, and not she wants to see more of the same sort of music. :^)

I had a funny one when doing a Red Cross presentation at a senior center. They always keep the pinochle game going while their speakers talk, and I had been warned about this, but there was this one really rude lady who just hung her head and looked pissed off the whole time I talked. After, I sat with her to have the free lunch (mmm!! uck!) and to see what had been going on.

It was just that she had personally lived all of the stories I, as a brand-new Red crosser was talking about, and had been there in some of Red Cross' toughest situations as a nurse (cross-threading here). And hearing me talk and be so new to it, like another generation carrying on her mission, had brought up some deep memories... she was lost in remembering, and that mad face was just her normal vacant-stare set of expressions. She gave me a real wake-up call, I'll tell you!

Not like your experience.... and I also forgot to mention that at clubs who treated my friends like that, I would go around and ask people kindly to shut the F up so I could hear!

Well, what can you do when Cleigh isn't there to serve as crowd control?

A pity 'Spaw was too ill to go or he'd have given you the pre concert NYCFTTS self-assertiveness course. Look what it's done for Nina Simone, his star pupil. Until she came to the Center, she would only sing from behind a curtain. Now, if she doesn't turn up it's because she doesn't give a sh*t and woe betide any audience member who doesn't give appropriate respect! [I've only seen her live once but she gave one of her band a real on-stage bollocking for missing a note or cue! I don't know what it did to him, but it terrified me!]
Seriously, I think this is a product of the tv age and affects theatre audiences as well, they're so used to chatting in front of the haunted fishtank they do it in live venues as well.
