Subject: title, artist? "...at 17 I learned the truth..." From: vhartman@ucla.edu Date: 18 Jun 97 - 04:31 AM a song I've known some lyrics of since I was a kid. haven't heard it since. would love to buy album by the performer, especially with this song on it. right now, DESPERATELY seeking full lyrics or at least song title or artist. Some lyric fragments are: ...at 17 I learned the truth...that love was meant for beauty queens...and high- school girls with clear skinned smiles, who married young and then retired...and when we dared to cheat ourselves at solitaire, inventing lovers on the phone... ...and ugly-duckling girls like me... Those are the big fragments still in my head. Please help! Thanks vhartman@ucla.edu |
Subject: RE: title, artist? From: Cathub Date: 18 Jun 97 - 04:46 AM The song is by Janis Ian. I believe the title is "At seventeen" but I'm not certain. It shouldn't be oo hard to find, if memory serves me right it was a big hit around '75 ish. Cathub. |
Subject: RE: title, artist? From: Peter Timmerman Date: 18 Jun 97 - 03:37 PM "At Seventeen" is on the 1975 album, Between the Lines. Janis has a web site of her own: "http:www.nashville.net/~janisian/". Off the same album, try "Water Colors", still the most haunting of songs. Yours, Peter |
Subject: Lyr Add: AT SEVENTEEN (Janis Ian) From: Alison Date: 19 Jun 97 - 08:53 PM Hi It's a good song. AT SEVENTEEN Janis Ian I learned the truth at seventeen, That love was meant for beauty queens And high school girls with clear skin smiles Who married young and then retired. The valentines I never knew, The Friday night charades of youth Where spent on one more beautiful, At seventeen, I learned the truth. And those of us with ravaged faces, Lacking in the social graces Desperately remained at home Inventing lovers on the phone, Who called to say, "Come dance with me," And murmured vague obscenities. It isn't all it seems at seventeen. A brown eyed girl in hand-me-downs Whose name I never could pronounce Said, "Pity please the ones who serve, They only get what they deserve." And the rich relation hometown queen Marries into what she needs With a guarantee of company And haven for the elderly. Remember those who win the game Lose the love they sought to gain, And debt? Ensures of quality, And dubious integrity. The small town eyes will gaze at you, And dull surprise when payment due Exceeds accounts received, at seventeen. To those of us who knew the pain Of valentines that never came, And those whose names were never called When choosing sides for basketball. It was long ago and far away, The world was younger than today, And dreams were all they gave for free To ugly duckling girls like me. We all play the game and when we dare To cheat ourselves at solitaire Inventing lovers on the phone, Repenting other lives unknown That called and said, "Come dance with me," And murmured vague obscenities To ugly girls like me, at seventeen. Subject: RE: title, artist? "...at 17 I learned the truth" From: GUEST Date: 01 Jul 08 - 01:38 AM some more minor corrections (many of the mistakes are ones of tense): "clear-skinned smiles" The Friday night charades of you/were spent on one more beautiful" "who call to say, come dance with me/and murmur vague obscenities" "in debentures of quality" "their small town eyes will gape at you/in dull surprise" "we all play the game and win, we dare...." "they call and say come dane with me/and murmur vague obscenities" |
