Subject: Bawdy:A Soldier went to war...
From: GUEST,Carisa

I'm looking for the rest of the lyrics to a bawdy song I heard a long time ago. I can only remember the first line

"A sol, a sol, a soldier went to war, For cont, for cont, for Country and for King"!

It's bawdyness becomes apparent if you say it out loud.

It goes on from there (quite a bit) but I don't really remember any of it.

And here is the really helpful bit: the tune is stolen from something operatic, but I don't know the name of it. I could hum it for you, but that doesn't translate over the computer well.

Anybody have any ideas?

-Carisa

A-sol, a-sol, a sol-dier I shall be
For King, For king, For King and count-er-ree
Fo' cur, Fo' cur, Fo' cur-i-osity..
Fight for the old count, fight for the old count, Fight for the old count-ry

Leastways, that was how we sang it in the Sealed Knot, one of the English Civil War societies, normally before keeling over helpless with laughter. Normally about three o'clock in the morning and a couple of bottles of mead worse for wear. As for coming from something operatic, I haven't heard of it but I would be fascinated to know more....

This looks interesting...(and about as subtle as the one about "Norfolk and good"...)

is the tune anything others would recognize?

Yes, but the name of the wretched piece has just gone straight out of my head...
The tune I know is a variation on a piece of Beethoven (I think). Any of the Brits out there -- what was the theme tune to 'Ludvig' a kids cartoon around in the late '70s/early 80s ... I'm going to be humming this tune all night and remember the name only at 3 a.m...

As I learned it in the late '50s, the tune seemed to be based on a bugle call, and the words went in this manner:

A-sol, a-sol, a sol-dier I shall be
CHORUS:
I fight for the count-
I fight for the count-
I fight for the count-e-ry.

Version I learned as a kid was

A sol, a sol, a sol-dier I will be
Two pis, two pis, two pistols on my knee,
For cu, for cu, for curiosity,
Up the old count, up the old count, up the old country.

Strange how these things fork into different versions.

The tune seems to be based on the first bars of Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik as far as I can tell.

The version I recall (1960s - in Junior school)

A sol, a sol, a sol-dier I will be
Two pis, two pis, two pistols on my knee,
I'll fight, I'll fight, I'll fight for the old country
I'll fight for the old count, fight for the old count, fight for the old country.

Fight always ended up pronounced as 'fart'

The tune we used wasn't quite Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, but there were similarities

Walrus.

I also remember the song being several verses. It was sung by a student at a "hootennanny" in 1964 while I was attending Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. My version I remember as:

A sol, a sol, a soldier went to war,
Two pis, two pis, two pistols by his side

I, too, was hoping to get the full version for a local bar guitarist who is singing similar bawdy songs.

We all have a different version! It's amazing how these things change over time....the one I learnt was:
A sol, a sol, a soldier's life for me,
Two pis, two pis, two pistols on my knee,
For cu, for cu, for curiosity
To fight for the old cunt, fight for the old cunt, fight for the old country!

It always had me in stitches as a kid... :)

F'king, f'king, for king and country,
Shit'ole, shit'ole, she told him not to go,
Her ass, her ass, harass them in the dark.
Eat shit, eat shit, each hit will find its mark.
A whore, a whore, a horse will carry me,
F'cue, F'cue, for curiosity
I'll fight for the ole cunt, fight for the ole cunt, fight for the ole country.

I learnt this in my school days a from a guy named pidler(anglo Indian) who used to pee in his bed even though he was in grade 7. BtW my school was in kalimpong, India named Dr. Grahams Homes. Its a nice place up in the hilly region bordering Nepal and was opened up a scottish guy. Its more than 100 years old school now. The song goes..

Ashole, Ashole, A soldier went to war,
With a piss, with a piss, with a Pistol in his knee,
Fuck u, Fuck u, for a cu-rio-sity,
Fight for the cunt, fight for the cunt, fight for the cunt-ta-ry.

I have weird memories of this from Scouts

Arsehole, arsehole, our soldiers off to war
To piss, to piss, two pistols in their hands
Fuck your, fuck your, for curiousity
To fight for the old cunt, fight for the old cunt, fight for the old country

There was a version sung in the U. of California band (Berkeley), which doesn't quite match anything above. It may have been borrowed from the ROTC there. This was in the early 1970's.

My count-, my count-, my count-ry's calling me, A s-ol, a sol-, a sol-dier I will be. Two pis-, two pis-, two pis-tols by my side, A hor-, a hor-, a hor-sie I will ride. A suc-, a suc-, a suc-cess I will be, for cu-, for cu-, for cu-riosity.

The "A suc-" may have been a local embellishment, because of contempt for the nutty Student Union government "ASUC".

Now I've been drinking tea so long, I think I've gotta ...

People on the corner all is doing well.
People in the valley are raising so much ...

She made my pressure rise.
Now all I really wanna do is get between her ...
