Subject: Mdct radio, a very stupid comp. question
From: Rick Fielding
Date: 01 Apr 00 - 11:33 PM

Hi. If this has been posted somewhere, please excuse, and just point me there.

I'm trying to listen to some of the archived shows while writing about a dozen letters, and wondered can you fast-forward to different parts of the shows? Can you re-wind (so to speak) back to certain parts (with any accuracy)?

Catters Tony Burns and Peter T usually answer my more embarassing questions, but they ain't around.

Thanks

Rick

Rick, there is a slide bar near the top of the Real PLayer which you can put your cursor on and slide over. It tales a minute to bufer and begin playing from that point. I don't know about the accuracy bit, as I haven't tried it.

Yes you can Rick,

on Real Audio (while youa re listening)there is a "slider" thing at the top beside the play, pause and stop buttons left click on it and slide backwards and forwards.. it will change the counter at the bottom... so you can "fast forward" and "rewind" to where you want.

Ahahhhh! The counter at the bottom!! Damn you guys are fast! and thoughtful!

Now lemme get this straight, If I move the cursor a bit to the right, it'll show up in the counter, right? That'll be pretty accurate. The problem has been trying to start a show in the middle when I've already heard part of it the day before.

For some reason the Real/audio thingy disappeared a few weeks ago (or wouldn't work). I used it for a few weeks to listen to Redhot jazz.

Ya know slowly but surely I'm learnin' a few things here, but the problem is that I have absolutely no interest in the process...only the results...so I have to learn in a sort of Pavlovian way!

I have several really good Mikes downstairs. 'Nother stupid question..does every computer have mike inputs somewhere? Heather knows some of this stuff but gets frustrated when I forget what she's told me.(other than that she's wonderful!)

Just heard you Alison for the first time..very nice.

Thanks again

Rick

Thanks Rick,

Your Mic input should be on your sound card, which will be somewhere in your computer.

Rick.

Your Sound Card should have a Mic, Line in, and line out, sockets. Your recording controls (presuming, of course, you are operating Windows) can be accessed by (double) clicking on your wee 'speaker' in the tray,/ Options/Properties/Adjust volume for recording.

There is a current thread (MP3/Mudcat Future I think) where there is more info of recording from the ra format into WAV and MP3.

Have fun.

Only computers with sound cards have the mike input - but that's pretty much any computer nowadays. On the sound card, there are usually 2 or 3 1/8" phono jacks, and a joystick (15 pin) port. The jacks are normally labeled something along the lines of "in", "out", and "mike", or have pictures that represent line in, line out, and microphone. It's hard to be more specfic than that because manufacturers vary so much on how they label.

The outputs "should" be accessible from the back of your computer. If your comp. has sound, then chances are it is configured properly.

One of those outputs should be your (desktop) speakers, the other 2 (excluding the Game Port), will be yer line in/ Mic in inputs.

If it's not legibly marked (and sound card manufacturers are no slaves to straightforwardness), it'll not make a whole heap of difference. Just remember to keep the output volume low, incase your input levels are too high, or incase you put the mic into the Line in by mistake.
There's always going to be a bit of messing around with it until you get it right. It's a lot easier than wiring a 64 channel mixer up to it, believe me.

Rick, look at the back of your computer. Follow the wire from your speakers into where they plug into the jack. There should be the Line in and Mike jacks right next to where the speakers are plugged in.

A little trick: In/out/mike female connectors are located on the back of the PC in the lower part of the case. To avoid having to dive into a mess of cables and dust, at the risk of being bitten by roaches (not rats, cause they are normally predated by roaches), I have installed cable extensions (2 m cables, male/female jacks) and let the female end always at hand, hanging somewhere discreetely. A paper label helps identify them so you can easily connect/disconnect audio equipment. Another advantage is that the plugs in the sound card will never suffer from wearing. They are always of a very poor quality and will brake at the 10th or 20th disconnection, ruining your sound card.
Un abrazo - Andrés

Mudcat Radio has nothing to do with folk music and is a showcase for the pathetic. How can this represent a folk site? It is understandable that you, Rick, with limited knowledge would not understand how to use a computer. Why you are here is even a greater mystery except to be a big fish in a tiny pond. I have listened to your latest release and find it not nearly great as you would have us believe. Not much true folk music on it.

Good thinking che! Why they don't stick the sockets on the front of these machines puzzles me. Well, I do have a neat little socket on me speakers saying "line-in" - but of course it doesn't work, so I've had to fiddle round the back and disconnect everything else by accident while I'm doing it.

Mind you any time I grumble about it, I pull myself up and remind myself that it's all an incredible miracle, and I've no idea how it works - and most of the time, it does work. Alleluiah. (And we waste our time and energy using it for silly little quarrels and so forth...Humans are funny creatures.)

Purity,

1. Mudcat is not a folk site. It is a folk and blues site.

2. I disagree with your views on the Mudcat Radio. The standards of the performers do vary but hasn't one of the joys of Folk music always been that people can simply join in and enjoy singing and playing without having to be great performers?

Jon
