Ok, I'm not sure that anyone else has experienced this, but...have you ever played a song that you liked SO MUCH it gives you this heart-pounding adrenaline rush, where you get totally giddy...almost "High" on singing it? There are lots of songs I get this way about...Has anyone else experienced this, and what are the songs that drive you over the edge?

Lots of 'em--it wears off sooner or later, for 99% of them.

My current fave cover being "Kelly's Mountain" by J.P. Cormier. (Sort of a Cape Breton bluegrass variant of El Paso: boy meets girl, boy takes bullet.) It's the cross-picked guitar parts combined with the singing that really get me going. J.P. plays such an incredible break on it that I don't even play one at all--it's a great song without it and that's just his personal signature on his song.

For a couple of years, the song that did this for me was "Peter's Dream" by Lennie Gallant, which has a lyric that builds to a shattering climax, which you don't quite see coming. It's about a beached fisherman who, after a night of drinkin and complainin with the byes, makes a decisive move towards a career change by blowing his inherited boat full of shotgun shell holes.

I'm a peaceful type in real life, really I am. Never owned a gun in my life. It's that divil Willie-O that likes these songs!

Bill

I song I sing a lot is "When First I Came To Caledonia". I love it so much that it sends me into another world , I wish there were a hundred more verses, although I am not sure the people listening feel that way.

"Stately Mansions" by Bryan Bowers. I am trying to learn to play it by ear. Like it so much I made a cassette of nothing but this song so I can play it over and over when I am in my car.

Several! The ones I like to do: Annie Laurie, Adieu Sweet Lovely Nancy, Night Rider's Lament, Angel Band, Kathleen Mavourneen, and a few shanties for good measure. There are others but these are my favorites.

The ones I like to hear: the entire Ian Tyson "Lost Herd" album, The Cocks Were Crowing by the Voice Squad, Long Black Veil by the Chieftains with Mick Jagger, The Band Played Waltzing Matilda (doesn't matter who's singing), To the Weaver's Gin Ye Go, Andy M. Stewart & Manus Lunny. And last but not least, I really love Johnny Horton's recording of The Battle of New Orleans.

There are too many to choose from. I can't be here all day!

Love almost anything by Utah Phillips, Tom Paxton , Bob Coltman or Gordon Bok.
what drives me over the edge? rock & roll in any form. If it has drums and electric guitars pounding and screeming, it makes me want to break things or hurt someone.

I used to fly out of my head everytime I heard Crosby, Stills and Nash sing Treat Your Children Well, if that's the right name for it.

Must have a code,
That you can live by..."

To this day I can't quite say why.

There is one song that gives me bumps whenever I sing it, hear it, think about it (like now).

"One night I had the strangest dream, I've never dreamed before.

I dreamed the world had all agreed to put an end to war.

and the people in the streets below were dancing round and round.

and the swords and guns and uniforms were scattered on the ground"

Right now I have tears in my eyes.

For me, different songs do different things. "Rolling Home" always gives me a deep calm... a feeling of absolute peace. But then, on the modern side, "Kiss Off" by the Violent Femmes perfectly encapsulates and recreates a huge amount of adolescent rage and anger. "Strike the Bell" and "Blow ye winds" get me in a happier, jollier, drinking place. There's just something about them that demands an audience singing along, good beer in hand...

Guess that in my case, just about any good song makes me loony in some way or another.

Oooh, thought of another one! "Le Bouef Sur Le Toi" (The Cow on the Roof) by Darius Milhaud is an RIOT! It's a 20 minute piece of lots of Brazilian folk tunes and dances (rhumba, samba, maxixe) mashed together into one. When we heard it the first time, my mother, sisters, and I were in tears from laughing so much! We were singing along with the little tunes, doing bizarre dances...ahh, what can I say? LOONY!

Dire Straits "I Want My MTV".....something about the opening bars just makes me wanna play a mean air guitar and lip synch with Mark! And I'm an acoustic guitar lover!

Eric Clapton's Unplugged version of "Layla"....

And I'm a big fan of JP Cormier (have had the privilege of seeing him in a variety of venues over the past few years and he never fails to knock my socks off) so just about anything by him....

Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlins' "455 Rocket" recorded by Kathy Mattea...that's a blast!

Lyle Lovett....gotta love some of the tunes on "Joshua Judges Ruth" but what REALLY gets me revved is the opening bars to Blue Rodeo's cd "5 Days In May"; love every song on the cd!

Not "Santeria" (though I was BLOWN away when I first heard it) but there is another Sublime song "Badfish"...pure joy! Wonderful lyrics..they make you feel good to sing them...and it's possibly Sublime's ONLY obscenity-free song, maybe that's why I love it. Another one I get wacky over is "A' Ghrian", the final from Shaun Davey's "The Pilgrim". MAN...Rita Connelly, huge chorus, big orchestra, Highland pipe band, drum set...HEAVEN!

Listening to really good acapello, multi-voice, certain songs, just sets me up on a pure, clear, mountain-top .... send chills all through me and rings my mind like a tuning-fork, focuses me like a magnet, freezes my limbs.
My first was this lovely acapello version of Silver Seeds of the Sun on a early 70's rock-station. Suggestions of anything of this type will be greeted with glad joy.

Just a few favourites just of the top of my head

The song I really remember going looney about when I was young was Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep by Middle of the Road ( you wouldn't Understand it was a family thing)

and of course there the point in Queen's Bohemian Rapsody where the heavy guitar kicks in and our entire household goes wild

Ah, that kind! Usually, funny songs! There's some good drinking-songs that take me that way, too, and some sea chanteys. I can't think of a specific one just now, except maybe "Rolling Down to old Mauwee", and "Zombee Jamboree". Mostly because they're old favorites I seldom get to sing. I'm afraid to say which ones, but some sentimental songs would too if they didn't require my control to not choke up and lose the ability to keep a note.... most of these are old chestnuts.

Mary Ellen Carter
Barrett's Privateers

Also I went over the top many years ago, with a parody of the Trogg's" Wild Thing" which we called "Canada, I Think I Love You"

And as far as listening

Carmina Burana by Orf (embarrassed my daughter by doing my own conducting at a live symphonic performance)
Jussi Bjorling's Nessun Dorma
