Subject: The truth is out From: kendall Date: 10 Apr 00 - 09:05 AM An article in our Sunday paper says that the National Rifle Assination has pulled its lying video after a protest from the government of OZ. Now, if Canada and England would just follow suit... |
Subject: RE: BS: The truth is out From: Willie-O Date: 10 Apr 00 - 11:19 AM Kendall, I don't know much about this NRA commercial stuff, but there's a right-wing Canadian MP (Member of Parliament) who is featured in what I believe are the ads you're referring to, discussing how much he dislikes our recently implemented comprehensive federal Canadian gun-control act. Since the commercials came out, he has claimed that he had no idea he was going to appear in a NRA commercial--he thought it was an independent documentary with an anti-gun-control slant. An interesting example of non-committal backpedalling--he stands by his views, I guess, but claims he didn't give the NRA permission to air them as a commercial for their organization. Willie-O |

Subject: RE: BS: The truth is out From: Ringer Date: 10 Apr 00 - 11:32 AM What's this "lying video", kendal (for those amongst us not Stateside)? |
Subject: RE: BS: The truth is out From: Ringer Date: 10 Apr 00 - 11:33 AM Sorry, for kendal read kendall |
Subject: RE: BS: The truth is out From: kendall Date: 10 Apr 00 - 11:46 AM The NRA was showing a video that was supposed to show the confiscation of personal firearms, and the distruction of them in Australia. Turned out that they were illegal arms, and the government of OZ protested. |
Subject: RE: BS: The truth is out From: Scabby Douglas Date: 10 Apr 00 - 11:55 AM Well... hand guns are illegal in UK. And rightly so... So I don't know whether that is good for your argument or bad. StevenC |
Subject: RE: BS: The truth is out From: Hyperabid Date: 10 Apr 00 - 12:01 PM Chanty If you go to some of the gun debate threads, you can see that some are not on side with the view we share of the law here in the UK. I gather the NRA video showed a UK hunt saboteur protest citing it as evidence of civil unrest... the NRA seems to be trying to feed US citizens a whole pile of cr*p about the position on guns in the rest of the world. Cheers Hyp |
Subject: RE: BS: The truth is out From: GUEST,aldus Date: 10 Apr 00 - 12:44 PM The new gun registration laws in Canada are supported by a vast majority of the population....this is not the view the NRA presented in the ads... Yes, it will inconvience some but it will protect many...The NRA has not presented that view. |
Subject: RE: BS: The truth is out From: BlueJay Date: 10 Apr 00 - 01:23 PM If not the same one, I have seen other NRA "Infomercials", usually claiming Adolph Hitler was the original proponent of gun control, leading to confiscation. The one I recall did mention confiscation in England, but I don't recall Australia. I probably turned it off before that. I DON'T want to start another gun control thread. My point is, at least here in the USA, many people like myself are so accustomed to political attack ads, (on name any subject), that we hardly even listen. The PRO gun control ads are just as slanted. As well as every other PAC of any ilk. And no one's worse than our political candidates. I've learned to take it all with a grain of salt, as have many others. It's to the point where you have to simply rely on what YOU know and feel to be true. |
Subject: RE: BS: The truth is out From: kendall Date: 10 Apr 00 - 04:47 PM The facts speak for themselves regardless of opinions. There is no earthly reason for ordinary citizens to own hand guns. They are made to kill people. period. Same goes for automatic rifles. If you cant kill a deer with one shot, stay the hell out of the woods. Before I grew up, I used to hunt deer with a flint lock rifle, and, I could drive nails with it. (The bullets, not the rifle.) |
Subject: RE: BS: The truth is out From: Liz the Squeak Date: 10 Apr 00 - 06:28 PM The banning of hand guns in the UK came as a "knee-jerk" reaction to the gunning down of innocent children by one madman. Much as I approve of the refusal to allow arms, there were a vast number of sporting shooters, who had to turn in their weapons. Many of these were family heirlooms, war relics and sporting pieces. But they were allowed to keep semi-automatics, shotguns and rifles - how daft can you get? LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: The truth is out From: Liz the Squeak Date: 10 Apr 00 - 06:30 PM Oh, and the next maniac who decided to murder little children wholesale didn't bother with firearms, he went straight in with a machete........ freely available, just as deadly. Are we to start banning Sabatier knives next? LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: The truth is out From: diesel Date: 10 Apr 00 - 10:39 PM Being from the Republic of Ireland, the law is one can only own one of two types of weapon, shotgun or small calibre - .22 - and then only if you have permission to shoot over farming land or are a certified member of a shooting club. I don't feel restricted in this legislation - I feel secure. As for those in this country who do advocate other uses of weapons - thats a different thread - I prefer secure peace Diesel
