...He talks with me etc.. I only know one verse to this traditional hymn. It begins "I come to the garden alone when the dew is still on the roses" Seems like there'd have to be more than one verse, but I can't find it. Can anyone help? A friend of mine's Dad used to sing it to him a loooooooooong time ago but he can't remember the lyrics. I'd love to surprise him with a complete version.

Yep; that's one of my favorites, too. Done it in Church a few times back when. I think It's a Fanny CROSBY tune, dating from around the 1880s.

I'm a little busy right now but will get back to ye. Do ye have the score? My scanner's on the fritz but I could prob'ly work it up on "Melody Assistant" if need be.

One of my fondest childhood memories is hearing Tenessee Ernie FORD sing "In The Garden" on one of his early albums - I still love it to this day. It may still be in print; check Amazon.com (or wherever) for T.E.FORD's "Sing a Hymn With Me"(?)

In the time it took to type that response, 4 of ye jumped on it, including full lyrics text. I'm impressed (not to mention blessed)! Do we have a "chatroom" going on here? How many of us Gospel Music affectionados are there in here, anyway? Well, praise de Lawd (say "AMEN!!!", somebody!!!)!

By the by, I collect old music dating from around 1800, much of it in the form of Hymnals, Gospel & Evangelical songbooks. If any of ye are interested in that reeeeally OLD stuff (some of it's pretty rich) drop me line; have some scanned image files / lyric text etc. on file somewhere. Lots of tattered paper I have yet to properly peruse & catalog stowed in boxes, too.

D'ye know that the CHANT was a common form of worship in Protestant fellowships in the early to mid 1800s? I'm not clever enough to tell if they are in the "Gregorian" mode, but they were used a lot, apparantly - especially for funerals. The one I've been able to figure out is certainly haunting enough;

"Safe in the bosom of thy Lord young spirit, Rest... thee... now...; E'en while with us thy footsteps trod His seal was on... thy... brow."

Once in a while I go through those old manuscripts and my hair (what there is of it) stands on end!

I've told this before, but.........When I was a little bot I asked my grandfather who Andy was as he was reading his nightly bible story to me. He looked quizically and asked what Andy I meant. I said, "You know Pop. the one we sing about in church." He thought for a moment and finally admitted that he couldn't think of any hymns about any "Andy." I said. "You know Pop, Andy walks with me, Andy talks with me." He brole up in gales of laughter and it was one of his favorite hymns and stories til the day he died.

Uncle Jaque , Max is working on a chat room, people currently use ICQ (for instructions on which, I am sure someone will be along with a pointer shortly) and also once or twice a week a bunch like to gather for "Hearme" chats - which are actually round robin sings....(put hearme in the filter and set the date to about a month, refresh and peruse....)

tattered paper sounds fascinating.....

and various forms of chant were in use at MY church right up until they forced us to ...I mean until we accepted the revised prayer book. That was about the same time most parishes switched from morning prayer 3 sundays a month to Eucharist every sunday.....

Thanx for the tech tips, fellow Pilgrims, but most of that is still mostly gibberish to me. Still learnin after all these years, don'tcha see.

"Jaque" indeed rhymes with "Rake"; I spell it that way since it is a perversion of the Franco-Yankee "Petit' Jaques" (Little John) my Pa used to call me. He worked in a paper mill in Berlin, NH, staffed (per tradition) predominantly with Franco Canadian expatriates, or decendants thereof. When I was a kid, the public schools up there still taught exclusively in French (I went to Gorham, where they spoke Yankish). And yes, I do have a rake (usually in the back of my van to facilitate dump-picking) and raggedy denim "overhauls" - although I'm currently wearing Amish-styled "Broadfalls" from GOHN Bros., which i am rather partial to.

I tried to "join" this thing but notice I'm still being called "Guest"(?). I've bookmarked this site and enjoy prowling around here, as it seems to be richly inhabited with kindred Spirits and generally interesting persons.

Thanks to all for the input. I never associated the song with the passage from John (not that I've memorized his work) but I think I'm going to try and work the two together in a little session at church next week--which has nothing to do with why I asked for the lyrics in the first place! Who knows what'll happen when you ask a question?

When the United Church of Christ was putting together its new hymnal (The New Century Hymnal) a few years ago, this hymn got the most votes both for "please include" and "don't you dare put this in." The compilers decided to include it. The little bit of history at the bottom of the page also says it is based on John 20. Many people (especially in our "social gospel" church) didn't like the hymn because they may have felt it placed too much emphasis on the protagonist's special relationship with Jesus. The Scriptural explanation helped, and also the last verse, which we have as "He bids me go, through the voice of woe His voice to me is calling" - in other words, get out of the garden and help the rest of God's children. I fully expect we will be singing it Easter Sunday. Sorry for so much religion, but I finally found a thread I knew a little bit about! I am amazed and delighted at the community here.
