The Cubs are still the doormat - hey, anybody can have a bad century! 20 major events that have occurred since the Chicago Cubbies last laid claim to a world series championship: 1. Radio was invented; Cubs fans got to hear their team lose. 2. TV was invented; Cubs fans got to see their team lose. 3. Baseball added 14 teams; Cubs fans get to see and hear their team lose to more clubs. 4. George Burns celebrated his 10th, 20th, 30th, 40th, 50th,60th, 70th, 80th, 90th and 100th birthdays. 5. Haley's comet passed Earth-twice. 6. Harry Caray was born...and died. Incredible, but true. 7. The NBA, NHL and NFL were formed, and Chicago teams won championships in each league. 8. Man landed on the moon (as have several home runs given up by Cubs pitchers). 9. Sixteen U.S. presidents were elected. 10. There were 11 amendments added to the Constitution. 11. Prohibition was created and repealed. (Could you imagine being a Cubs fan without being able to drink?). 12. The Titanic was built, set sail, sank, was discovered and became the subject of major motion pictures, the latest giving Cubs fans hope that something that finishes on the bottom can come out on top. 13. Wrigley Field was built and becomes the oldest park in the National League. 14. Flag poles were erected on Wrigley Field roof to hold all of the team's future World Series pennants. (Those flag poles have since rusted and been taken down). 15. A combination of 40 Summer and Winter Olympics have been held. 16. Thirteen baseball players have won the Triple Crown; several thanked Cubs pitchers. 17. Bell-bottoms came in style, went out of style and came back in style; disco, swing, and ballroom dancing have done the same. 18. The Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox and Florida Marlins have all won the World Series. 19. The Cubs played 14,153 regular-season games; they lost the majority of them. 20. Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, Oklahoma and New Mexico were admitted to the Union. |

Matt Williams, Kevin Mitchell, and Will Clark in that killer 1-2-3 batting order, earthquakes notwithstanding. Kevin's barehanded catch at the warning track, Will punching out the San Diego Chicken and calling himself safe at home plate, and the flags in the outfield all three blowing in different directions at any given time. His father taunts Lou Gehrig as he approached the plate and Gehrig responds by hitting a homer into the stands exactly where he and his dad were sitting....and the Yanks win! I was a fan of the Kansas City Athletics (omigod) when Charlie Finlay owned them and before they moved to Oakland and became a baseball team!!! We used to go to the games all the time in K.C., just to see what Charlie would do to bring people in -- invented the orange ball, the hideous uniforms that plague us today, and, Oh, the donkey that brought in the refreshed balls, and everything. They made the Cubbies look good: God what a great team. Now that was a bunch of losers -- got me all warmed up for the Toronto Blue Jays when I moved north. Another great bunch of losers: but, I don't know, I was older then, they didn't seem to have that real loser quality. I should also say that when they moved out of the terrible stadium they were in, and went to the flashy Skydome, I gave them up. It was at that point that they really began winning -- is there a pattern here? I am for hire. You can pay me to stay away from your team: easy money, really. yours, Peter T. |

Year after year...more utility outfielders picked up, but no pitching, which is what they really need! Around my house (thanks to my grandfather) we call them "The BumPhillies" ever when they win. My grandfather also loved to watch the Cubs, since we'd always trade away lousy players who'd become superstars when they got to Chicago! They were like a Phillies-rejects-gone-good team! --Mbo |

My nostalgia for the game of my youth at times is overwhelming. I know the guys were getting screwed and at the mercy of unfair owners and needed the union, but the multi-billion dollar game is different. Buy yourself a team and then trade for big bucks after they win the pennant or the series. As a player, you'd be nuts not to grab all the loot you could, but the days of players living in the neighborhood and getting some free stuff from admiring friends, local merchants, and fans is but a memory. But damn, they're GREAT memories. I saw the Mick take one out of Cleveland Stadium like it had wings. I remember listening to Jim Hegan after a game as he talked with a group of my Dad's friends. I can still do the batting stances and "idiosynchasies" of most of the Indians back then.....Rocky Colavito, Vic Power, Minnie Minosa, Tito Francona........Later, I watched the Big Red Machine with Bench, Morgan, Perez,Rose........I got to see greats from other teams too. The Yankees, Pirates, Giants, Cubs.........I saw Harmon Killebrew hit a homer when he was on the streak......and I listened to the radio with my grandpa, heard it the night Harvey Haddix lost a no-hitter........... Somehow, its not the same today. But I admit that last year was encouraging.........

Never again. Mays, McCovey, Cepeda, Marichal, Alou...what a team. I literally bled for them (I lived in Dodger territory and got the s--t beat out of me for exulting after the Giants won the playoff game). Well, here's hoping they can win their first game at Pac Bell Park one of these days... |

They say McCovey's liner was rising as Richardson caught it and probably would have left the park had he not. Twas not to be,and who'd have guessed with that line-up they'd not return to the series again. Lots of second place finishes and Candlestick wasn't much help either. I think Mays would have had a lot more homers had he played somewhere else. Of course, I root for two teams at all times, the Giants, and whoever is playing the Dodgers, heh heh. As for the earthquake, they were down two games coming in to Frisco, beautiful sunny day, the A's were a good team, but I was optimistic , then boom!
