Subject: Maid of Coolmore and Sir Aldingar - lyricsreq

This may be a long shot, but has anyone got the lyrics to the Maid of Coolmore. It's sung by the Bothy Band, but I reckon its an old one. I've got a recording of it but the words are too difficult to make out.

Also has anyone heard of an excellent song "Sir Aldingar". A Breton band called Kornog do it but I think its an old Scottish song. The story is about a Knight that tries to dispose of the Queen by drugging her and putting her in bed with a beggarman for the King to find. Again the lyrics are very difficult to understand - especially as it is sung with a very strong scottish accent.

Gabh raibh maith agat.

Laoise.

See Sir Aldingar for replies to that part of the question

I also have a recording of "Maid of Coolmore" and agree that the words are incomprehensible. However it seems quite similar to "Pretty Susie, The Pride Of Kildare" which is in the DT.

Cheers,
Alan

Subject: Lyr Add: THE MAID OF COOLMORE (from Bothy Band)
From: Wolfgang Hell

An attempt on the Bothy Band version of the Maid of Coolmore by a fellow German follows. Since he is English teacher and lived in Ireland for two years most of the words might be trusted. But there is room for improvement.

THE MAID OF COOLMORE

1. From sweet Londonderry to fair London town
there is not a nicer (heather) anywhere to be found
where the children each evening is a-playing round the shore
and the joy-bells are ringing for the maid of Coolmore.

2. The first time that I met her she passed me by
the next time that I met her she bade me goodbye,
but the last time that I met her she grieved my heart sore
for she sailed down Loch (Foilagh?) away from Coolmore.

3. If I had the power the storm to rise
I would blow the wind either for to darken the skies
I would blow the wind either to make the (salt seas) to roar
on the day that my love sailed away from Coolmore.

4. To the north of Americay, my love, I'll sail (forth)
for there I know noone, neither noone does me,
but should I not find her I'll return home no more
but like a pilgrim I will wander for the maid of Coolmore.

5. = 2.

Thanks all of you for your replies. I will be following up the leads youve given me. You will all get a special mention on my album (when it comes out - maybe 5 years time).

Thanks Wolfgang - it was the third verse that was causing the most trouble. I may be able to help you out (and your English Teacher friend) with some of the words in the other verses. Unfortunately don't have the lyrics with me today.

Slan go foill

Laoise.
