Subject: Another New Virus Just Released From: GUEST,Lee Date: 05 May 00 - 03:03 AM This is in addition to the one that I mentioned yesterday that developed a second thread. Someone is sending out a very cute screensaver of the Budweiser Frogs. Apparently if you download it you will lose everything! Your hard drive will crash and, I'm told, someone from the Internet will get your screen name and password! It just went into circulation yesterday, as far as we know. This is a new, very malicious virus and not many people know about it. This information was announced yesterday morning from Microsoft. AOL has said that this is a very dangerous virus and that there is NO remedy for it at this time. Given that I am just a guest and not a member of Mudcat I'm sorry to impart two lots of bad news in two days. Perhaps I should join - then I could do it with a clearer conscience. Lee |
Subject: RE: Another New Virus Just Released From: Amos Date: 05 May 00 - 03:11 AM Well we're all a little punch drunk from the last round, but Lee, I have to say your language is very reiniscent of many many years of panicked emails that shouted about other emails that woudl destroy your hard disk and reroute all your checks and neuter your dog...and so on. Could you perhaps get some details about this? The more facts, the easier to handle it. And we would be glad to have you join the 'Cat! Easy, painless, and free. And you're welcome. A screensaver could easily do exactly what you describe,if it were so written, since they are executable files , just as the Visual Basic attachment in the Love Letter was. OTOH, Microsoft and AOL -- the companies --are not generally the best sources for virus data. But it is stioll highly possible that this could happen. The new lesson, just like the old one, is: Don't Open Attachments from Unknown Sources. A. |
Subject: RE: Another New Virus Just Released From: Escamillo Date: 05 May 00 - 05:21 AM May I add another one ? Don't Open Attachments from Unknown or Very Well Known Sources or Any Sources Except When You Specifically Asked For It and You Know What It Is. !! New viruses take your mail list by assault and spread out to your friends who will see: From: Lee - Subject: Don´t miss this one! - and the lethal attachment. Another one and I´ll shut up: Don´t Trust in Chains of Virus Alerts Especially When They Make Reference to Microsoft, IBM or Other Known Companies ! They have the purpose of gathering thousands of genuine e-mail addresses transmitted from user to user until they reach the headquarters of the SPAMMERS who sell them for high prices, or virus producers. Un abrazo - Andrés |
Subject: RE: Another New Virus Just Released From: kendall Date: 05 May 00 - 06:46 AM I heard about the frog thing months ago |
Subject: RE: Another New Virus Just Released From: Gary T Date: 05 May 00 - 09:56 AM According to McAfee.com, the Bud Frogs thing is a hoax. Read about it here |
Subject: RE: Another New Virus Just Released From: Gary T Date: 05 May 00 - 09:59 AM Well, that got you to their site, but with a blank page. Just click on "Virus hoaxes" and then scroll down and select "Budweiser frogs". But I'll try it again. |
Subject: RE: Another New Virus Just Released From: katlaughing Date: 05 May 00 - 12:11 PM NPR just had a story about a new one today. They said this is NOT a joke. I dind't catch all of the story but apparently the subject says something about a JOKE. Allan C. just mentioned he'd heard of it, maybe he will post more info here. |
Subject: RE: Another New Virus Just Released From: Jacob B Date: 05 May 00 - 02:10 PM The Joke virus is just the LoveLetter virus with the subject line changed. There is also a version with "Very funny" as the subject line. An older virus, but still around (I received it this week) has an attachment called PrettyPark, and a message that says "Test Pretty Park". Don't open the attachments on any of these. And, as Escamillo said, don't open any attachments unless you know what it is in advance. |
Subject: RE: Another New Virus Just Released From: SDShad Date: 05 May 00 - 02:17 PM There's even a Lithuanian variant of ILOVEYOU. From an ABC News article: 'Another variant of the virus, called Susitikim (which in Lithuanian means: Let's meet), has a subject line that reads "Susitikem shi vakara kavos puodukui." In Lithuanian, the sentence translates into: "Let's meet this evening for coffee."' Chris |
