Subject: Reminder Autoharp friendly hearme 5/14!
From: GutBucketeer
Date: 06 May 00 - 12:54 AM

Just a reminder that the hearme on Sunday May 14th at 7:30 PM EST will be AUTOHARP FRIENDLY!!! If you play, strum, pluck, or pick an autoharp please come on by. Let's show the Mudcat what autoharpin' is all about.

The link to hearme is here:

HERE! JAB

P.S. All other instruments and vocal chords are also welcome!

P.P.S. I will be late since I have a farewell party to go to earlier in the evening. I will be there though.

JAB- I'm happy that this is coming about! I will listen if nothing else. But I need some help. Are you a "Computer Enhanced" individual? I'm megabyte challenged, and having some sound trouble. Briefly, I want to participate in "HearMe" so I bought a ten dollar mike at WalMart. When trying recording in "Sound Recorder", it sounds terrible. Static and distortion are really bad. I tried using "Help", changing from radio quality to CD quality with no improvement. I even went to Control Panel-Multimedia and messed with the audio settings, still no luck. My speakers are cheapos, but they've always sounded pretty good with other things, so I don't think it's the speakers. Unless you or someone else has any ideas, the only thing I can think of is that the mike itself is no good. Thanks for any help you can give. BlueJay

Enhanced? Challenged? Bluejay, are you cross posting again? I am "technologically impaired", mostly by being over 21, but I can buy booze, legally!!

Sorcha- I guess I'm getting my threads confused. "Technologically Impaired", that's pretty good. I've always used "Computer Illiterate" to describe myself. The autoharp is supposed to have thirty six strings, but I only count thirty five. I really need to go fishing on the North Platte, but I heard that it dried up. BlueJay

Yep, Rog, we'll be doing one tomorrow evening, but really you can start one yourself whenever you want, too! Just start a thread to let others know. Recently we've been having HearMe's just about everynight...but it only takes on person to give the word to head over there and start the fun!

Ooops! I was tired and got the dates wrong. It should have been for the 7th!. Let's do it on the 14th anyway since I also emailed the autoharp cyberpluckers list serve to join in.

To find out more about hearme just do a filter on messages with hearme in the title for the last 6 months. Some of the early ones have full explanations on what is needed and how to set your PC up.

Roger all you need to do is click on the link given above (maybe a very small download the first time)... then when you want to speak.. hold down the F9 button.... if you just want to listen.. all you need to do is open the link... there is a text box.. where you can "type" chat..... anyone there will help talk you through any problems.. it is VERY easy to use...

I was trying to capture the idea that everyone with an autoharp should come and play, but others should play and sing too. Hence Autoharp friendly. The Hearme circles have allways welcomed AHarps. That is not true everywhere else in the world.

I was so impressed with the autoharps tonight, I'll try to get my hands on one and see if I can play it!

Heavens Alison. The last thing we wanted was only autoharps to play! If you haven't gotten to know an autoharper they are the friendliest, nicest, most open group of people that you could ever meet (and they have great potlucks too, at least around here!!!). I've never come across an autoharper that wouldn't play with anyone, anytime, anywhere. I have a great CD with an autoharp and oboe duet, and another with autoharp and sax. Sounds crazy but they both work.

Anyway: I had fun tonight and played pretty much everything I could think of on the Autoharp.

She will be coming Round the Mountain
Drunken Sailor
Lil' Liza Jane
Roll on the Ground
Morning town ride
Going Across the Mountains
Chewing Gum

JAB

P.S. Now that we have done autoharps what about any other instruments.... Banjo?? squeezeboxes??

Sorry I didn't make to HearYa'll...my daughter surprised me and took me a movie; then she lost some escape artists dogs she was sitting and I had to go help her find them!

Maybe we can have a repeat performance sometime?

Jim, thanks for organising that HearMe. Erin and I enjoyed the opportunity to share our music with you, and enjoyed hearing the other harpers we managed to meet in the short time available to us, yourself, harpgirl, and stew.

It must be a really neat way to spend a Sunday evening, a folk club in your own home.

It seems to be protocol to list what you played, so from us down here in kiwiland it was:

My Clinch Mountain Home, and San Antonio Rose.

Catch you all again, Roger.

I had a great time and wished I could have stayed longer. Boy Alison, what time did it finally break up? You're message shows that people were still on at 2:00 AM in the morning Mudcat time!

Keep on singing

I've got access troubles. I get to Jon's site, click "Join Chat", and get the initial window that says "Powered by HearMe", but the white space never fills in with who's on board and the "Options" and "Text Chat" buttons.

I tried getting offline and coming back; no dice.

I tried rebooting; no dice.

I inquired of Jon, and one of his suggestions was that I needed to uninstall and reinstall. How does one do this? I don't find instructions for uninstalling at his site or at the main HearMe.

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm rolling on the floor with withdrawal symptoms!!!!

JAB- I really enjoyed the harps, guitars and vocals. It was exciting to me because it is the first time I've ever gotten the thing to work, the first time I've ever heard any of your voices, and the first time I have ever spoken into a computer. I had to go to work before I came up with a locking device for the f9 key, But I'll get it. I did figure out that a Shubb Capo won't do the job! Thanks, and I hope to HearYou all again soon. Second message gave me instructions that had me dancing around twenty pages without any simple download evident anywhere. I have had knowledgable people try to work out this problem and they cannot do it. I finally deleted and installed new versions of ICQ and Hearme, and still have the same trouble as you do. I had looked forward to last night for a week and could not get on. Yours, Aye. Dave (tam)

Dave,

Several people are having problems. Maybe it's the same thing. All I know is that several weeks ago, I had what appeared to be the same problem you are describing. I saw all that white space and tried to get in several times before I noticed that it was telling me to download (or update or something) a new VoiceCreator. I clicked on the "yes, download" and instantaneously I was in.

Also, sometimes when using RealAudio, the window is minimized initially, and I don't think to look for it.

Good luck. You missed a good 'un last night. Tell your friend JohnIndy to come back again.

And Big Dog saved the best 'til last- I missed Sloop JohnB and This Morning This Evening. Spider sang a beautiful lullaby. Harpgirl did her magic. Ceit has a voice like an angel.

Have to be in bed by midnight or I turn into a bitch on Monday morning. Will have to plan a sick day or two on Monday so I can play late with the west coasters and beyond.

REALLY sorry I missed most of the music last night...had also been looking forward to hearing other autoharp players. (Thanks to all of you who welcomed Gail and Shelley into the chat when we finally made it!!!!) Jim....Gail says THANK YOU very much for the music lesson!!! I had introduced her to autoharp a couple months ago and sat her down with the Brian Bowers video. She found an autoharp yesterday at a yard sale.....dirty, musty, rusted strings...but will be a beautiful instrument for her when we finish resurrecting it!!! Now that harpers have "come forward" to play, I'm hoping we'll have LOTS more in Hearme sessions. I was having the same problems as Mary in Ky. accessing the site until I clicked "yes" on the notice and got in right away.

...it was a technically frustrating night for me! It has been hot as a two dollar pistol in Florida with no rain and after hosting a music party in honor of Dr. Peterson the night before, my house was still an inferno! What with the dogs howling, the picks slipping off my sweaty fingers, spilling my beer on the keyboard in excitement when Stew Schneider came on, and then having my keyboard go south (or maybe the harddrive), I got out some snippets of Eight More Miles to Louisville, Flop-Eared Mule, and sang The Gray Funnel Line.
Roger, Jim and Stew all played (did I miss any other harps?) and it was terrific! There are no other autoharp players in my neck of the woods so I have to go clear to Tampa to find folks that play autoharp. I enjoyed everything I heard and appreciate the chance to jam online with musicians all over the world more than I can say! Let's do it again! harpgirl

Thanks for "hosting" this one, JAB. I really liked having a "featured instrument" before we singers took over. Sure, maybe concertina or banjo. If I get good on the ukulele maybe I'll try that. (Don't hold your breath!) :-) Great fun, as always. Harpgirl, beer and all, it was outstanding! Being halfway between Mudcat time and Oz time I get the best of both! Oh, I sang "The Perennial Beginner, or the F-chord song" (in the DT as "The Perenial Beginner" with one L), and "Turn the World Around".

Aloha,
