Does anybody have the lyrics to "That'll Never Happen Again". I think that's the title, if not, anyway, it's the refrain. A funny, goodtime rag-type song in G, but as a recording I believe it's out of print.

I have the recording on a Magpie record. If I'm not mistaken, the original was written by Blind Blake -- you might try using that as a search keyword. In the meantime, I'll try to see what lyrics I can remember, and will post them later today.

I've also heard this performed by Roy Bookbinder.

From: Earl

I learned it from a Blind Blake record. These are the words I use:

I met a girl at the cabaret
Pretty papa won't you come my way
Her old man knew what I was all about
Waiting back at home just to throw me out
He broke my nose and he split my chin
Don't you come around here again
He chased me through the kitchen and out the door
Hit me with a chair till my head got sore

That'll never happen no more
That'll never happen no more
That'll never happen no more
That'll never happen no more

Was in Chicago winter and fall
I had to wear my overalls
I was poor but it wasn't my fault
I'm used to eating chicken now I'm eating salt
I met a girl with a big mink fur
Big fat fool me, I followed her
She pulled a gun out and she took all my dough
I didn't eat my heart out and I didn't get sore
Cause that'll never happen no more

That'll never happen no more
That'll never happen no more
That'll never happen no more
That'll never happen to me no more

Van Ronk's version, at least one of them:

I met a gal in a cabaret
She said Papa are you goin my way
I was mad to know what it was all about
She took me home just to put me out
She broke my nose and she split my chin
Don't let me catch you round here again
Whipping through the kitchen and out through the door
She hit me with a chair til my head got sore

That'll never happen no more, That'll never happen no more

Live in Chicago in the winter and fall
Cause me to wear my overalls
I got drunk, and it was my fault
I was drinking tequila and leaving the salt
I met a girl in a big mink coat
Fancy car and a forty foot boat
She pulled out a gun and she took my dough
But I didn't holler and I didn't get sore

That'll never happen...

I went to a party the other night
Got to drinking I was feeling alright
I lit up a reefer, I was drinking some gin
Just sitting back waiting for some fun to begin
A prettly little gal comes up to me
Says come on Daddy let's make whoopee
I woke up in an empty bed
My pockets was empty, had a pain in my head

But that'll never happen...

Speaking of Van Ronk Classics, he used to sing "One MeatBall" which I think was originally done by Josh White. A friend of mine used to sing it all the time, but i can't seem to find th lyrics. i would appreciate any help sith it.

Hi, Mr. Colonel Casey, Sir: We're going to have to lobby Dick Greenhaus to include that classic in the database. Click here to get to the thread that has the lyrics for "One Meatball."

Does anyone have the chords for this? There is an interesting decrease sequence between verses that I would like to find.
I hope the thread is still active.
Thanks very much.
Mike

What's a "decrease sequence"?

Do you mean the stoptime (is that the word for it?) bit in G - G7 - C - Eb7 (or C#0) - then going back to regular rhythm for G - E7- A7 - D7- G and back into the verse?

Mike,

Playing in G, I do

G G7 C Eb

for the decreasing sequence.

Play the C as 310233 ( high string to low) and just slide up 3 frets and you'll have the Eb. You can skip or damp the bass string if you need.

Alternatives to the Eb are Cm (X1013X) and C#dim (3232xx) (I think.) I forget what van Ronk plays.

So the song is
G D7 Met a girl..
G D7 Said...
G D7 A7 D7 I never..
Again for second half of verse. Then
G E7 A7 D7 That'll...
G E7 A7 D7
G G7 C Eb The descending part Hmm Hmm..
G E7 A7 D7

Good luck. Play with it some. It's a blues, after all. (Damn ggod one too)

T.J.

I don't know who you are TJO but your advice has been the most help with moving round the fretboard that I have received in years.
It was sensible, accurate, and sympathetic. And very greatly appreciated.
I should keep you in a closet to be be taken out when needed. Rather often, as things stand!
Thanks once again.

Mike-

That's what happens around here, or in this case happened three years ago and continues to resonate.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble
