Subject: Happy jolly songs, medicine for the soul From: Spider Tom Date: 24 May 00 - 04:49 AM Don't you just LOVE happy jolly songs?,br. Are they not pure medicine for the soul? Don't they just make you want to take a long bus ride with a troupe of singing tourists rocking and reeling in mind numbing singalongs. Oh! the delight of it all! Till the bus hits a wall. Oh well, such is life! Spider Tom |

As Chesterton (or rather Father Brown) once said "If ever I murdered someone, I dare say it might be an Optimist."

Subject: RE: Happy jolly songs, medicine for the soul From: Midchuck Date: 24 May 00 - 08:47 AM I like songs with jolly happy tunes and utterly miserable, self-pitying lyrics. There's something that appeals to me about the contradiction. Which is, of course, why I'm inclined towards bluegrass and classic country music. Peter. |

Subject: RE: Happy jolly songs, medicine for the soul From: catspaw49 Date: 24 May 00 - 11:34 AM I think the opposite is great to Midchuck, but there are damn few of those...Which is why I like putting really gross limericks (only need a few mods in the phrasing) to "Ashoken Farewell."

Subject: RE: Happy jolly songs, medicine for the soul From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 24 May 00 - 03:46 PM Therte was this fella who'd heard about singing telegrams (that dates the story a bit I). Anyway he never gets a telegram in his life. Then at last, it's his birthday, and there's a ring on the door, and it's the telegram boy.
"A singing telegram" he thinks. And he throws wide the door - "Come on, sing my telegram for me".
And the boy hesitates - it's not really a singing telgram. "Come on now - it's my birthday, you can do it."
And the boy nods, and strikes a pose, rips open the telegram, and to the tune of Happy Birthday to You he sings:
"You have not paid your rent,

Subject: RE: Happy jolly songs, medicine for the soul From: GUEST,Mrr Date: 25 May 00 - 11:12 AM Hey Spidey, did you catch the verse about Anansi in the Old Time Religion stuff? Anyway, one of the most mindless happy happy songs is Was A Sunny Day, by Simon without Garfunkel. What a hoot. I sing that, and Oh What A Beautiful Morning, kind of over and over again, when filled with joy. I also whistle Ode to Joy a lot, with the English words in mind (...Speed the slow, remind the eager, Help the weak and guide the strong, None shall push aside another, None shall let another fall, Work beside me O my brother All for one and One for All) rather than the more stern German original. Also, for some unkown reason, Weathercock by Jethro Tull. I just love the imagery in Do you simply reflect changes in the patterns of the sky / Or is it true to say the weather heeds the twinkle in your eye / Do you fight the rush of winter and hold snowflakes at bay / Do you lift the dark (something something)and help it on its way? Good morning, Weathercock, make this day bright... |
