Subject: Mixolydian tunes From: Ana Date: 30 May 00 - 02:04 AM This query is in the vein of "I don't know much about...., but I know what I like"!! I understand that "She moved thro' the fair" uses a mixolydian tune. Can somebody explain to this poor plebe (in simple terms please) what this means. I gather a few other tunes such as "The Star of Belle Isle" and "Green Shores' use it too. Thanks |
Subject: RE: Mixolydian tunes From: Pene Azul Date: 30 May 00 - 02:17 AM A Mixolydian scale is a major scale with the seventh flatted. An example is the scale starting at G and played on all the white keys of the piano. It's whole-whole-half-whole-whole-half-whole. PA |

Subject: RE: Mixolydian tunes From: Helen Date: 30 May 00 - 04:19 AM Ana, If we did a survey of every Mudcatter I reckon that at least 90% of us would agree with your statement: "Ah.. so much to learn and so little time. If only I could locate an income with out having to go out to work for a time." You are not alone. Helen |

Subject: RE: Mixolydian tunes From: GUEST,Bruce O. Date: 30 May 00 - 03:31 PM Mixolydian is perhaps most easily thought of as major mode, but with the 7th flatted. In my mode number identifier system it is #858, and in file COMBCOD2.TXT on my website you can find 320 of them. |

Subject: RE: Mixolydian tunes From: black walnut Date: 30 May 00 - 04:35 PM anna, mixolydian is probably my favourite mode. it's a joy to listen to, to play in, and it's a wonderful mode to inspire songwriting. it would be nice to get a good long list of tunes and songs that are in this mode. (forgive me, if this has been already done, i'll find it). ~black walnut |

Subject: RE: Mixolydian tunes From: Susan-Marie Date: 30 May 00 - 05:13 PM Ana - Bruce's web site is (a drum role please, this is my first attempt at a workable blue clicky thing: here If I screwed that up, it's located at http://users.erols.com/olsonw/ |
Subject: RE: Mixolydian tunes From: GUEST,Bruce O. Date: 30 May 00 - 05:58 PM Congratulations Susan-Marie. It took me 3 tries before I could make the blue clicky thing work, and I still sometimes forget to put in the http stuff. I was also surprised that that address works. I've always used www.erols.com/olsonw |
Subject: RE: Mixolydian tunes From: Ana Date: 31 May 00 - 04:06 PM Thanks guys. I 've had to stash your site for my weekend cruisings Bruce - looks like a lot of work is captured on it. I haven't quite figured your #858 system, but I'm imagining it will all come clear soon. Thanks too Dan - I'll track the tunes down for a listen. Like Black Walnut, I'd like to hear of others favourites in this mode. Cheers Ana
