About a year ago my brother put me on to an unusual place to get some very good inexpensive CD's. He told me he picked up the best of Sun Records CD at the local Sunoco gas station for $6.99 Canadian (About $4.70 U.S).

Since then I have browsed through their selections whenever I get gas. This morning I bought Woody Guthrie, Pastures of Plenty. It is a 26 track CD that includes the title track, John Henry, Do Re Mi, Sinking of the Reuben James, Gypsy Davey, Grand Coulee Dam, Pretty Boy Floyd, Philapelphia Lawyer, This Land is Your Land etc. He is joined on a few tracks by the likes of Leadbelly, Sonny Terry and Cisco Houston. The sound quality is quite good.

I have also purchased CD's by Billie Holiday,Louis Armstrong, Johnny Winter and Louis Prima. Some of them aren't the greatest recordings, but each one has a few gems and at $6.99 you can't beat them.

They seem to rotate the inventory regularly. I would recommend keeping an eye ont their selections.

Unfortunately, the East Coast of Canada is a bit shy of Sonoco stations.....any other ideas for us collectors who are broke?

Steve, another place you can find CDs like that is Shoppers Drug Mart. I've picked up quite a few by various blues artists that are pretty good. Watch buying any old R'n'R, though — the tunes are usually out-takes from recording sessions and some of them are pretty awful.

A friend bought an ok-looking cassette from a gas station of some country music. We were on a long overnight drive. After hearing just two of the songs, he wound down the window and threw it out the window. It was APPALLING!

I had a similar experience some years back. i bought a cassette of Peter Sarstedt and it's mainly badly recorded live takes.

Perhaps the bargain gas station purchases are only to be found in the US! Callie

ddw,

I bought a couple of great compilation Bluegrass cassettes at Shoppers Drug Mart a few years ago. I have to go there tonight, I'll look.

I was listening to the Woody CD on the way to work this morning and I'm very surprised at how good the quality is.

I forgot I also bought a Jerry Lee Lewis CD there and it wasn't very good. But I'm pretty happy with the others.

I have purchased everything from the Kingston Trio to Maria Callas at Rest Areas along the Jersey Turnpike. Quality is mixed. One is a bootleg tape of Pavorotti in concert complete with audience coughs and sneezes. But for $4.95 and in the middle of nowhere with 5 hours drive ahead...
