Could you give us the first few lines so as to make it a bit easier on us
I take it that the song is called 'An Cailín deas'
Could it be 'An cailín deas crúite na mBó'

Need more info

B.

Search for 'das' and 'dhas' for about half a dozen tunes which fit that title in the Irish tune index on my website. www.erols.com/olsonw [Including "The pretty girl milking the cow", as suggested above.]

I think this is " An Cailin deas" about the pretty girl milking her cow etc.

There's loads of "Cailín Deas.." songs.

She'll turn up eventually

If it is, '...crúite na mBó", I can scan it and send it off to her, but it would be nice to know for certain.

Search the forum on 'Pretty Maid' for an old thread on "Pretty girl milking the cow".

Thanks for the suggestions, all, but we're not talking about the same song. I called it Irish because it has Irish subject matter, but that may be misleading.

I acquired the words in Shropshire about 20 years ago, from a chap called Ron Nurse. Here is the first verse:

One evening fair to take the air As the summer sun went down The moon in all her beuaty rare The stars began to crown By Clontarf's bay I made my way When a female form did pass More bright by far than the evening star And I called her the Colleen Das

The maiden claims to be the only daughter of Erin's king Brian in a later verse.

Does anyone recognise it?

Tina

If this is what you're looking for, here's a verse in .aiff format.

Thanks for the link: that's certainly the words I've got, but your second link also points to the words, rather than a tune.

And I don't recognise the .aiff extension: what format is that, and what will I need to play it?

My husband sorted out the link, and found the tune, which is pretty much the one I remember. Our browser already had a plug-in for the .aiff file type, so that was easy.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Next thing is to search Nathan Rose's site to see if there's any history for the song...
