Here's a link to a story in today's Guardian - the idea being that Elvis's family sems to have come from the Presili Mountains in Wales; and it points out that the name Elvis is from a saint from the Irish Province of Munster (Up Tipp!) who baptised St David.

Just thought you'd like to know these things.

According to the Shropshire Star, Mid-Wales edition, the chapel of St Elvis (I'm not kidding) is somewhere in the Welsh mountains.
The Star is not renowned for it's accuracy. Hwyl Bron.
We'll keep a welcome in the hillside,
We'll keep a welcome in the vales,
This land you left will still be singing,
When you come home again to Wales.

I think the real problem here is the similarity between Wales and whales. As Elvis was often compared to a whale in later life, perhaps this caused some confusion in a news story somewhere or another. Have there been any beachings on Puffin Island?

Just trying to track down Elvis Jon.

Actually, I had just read a boatload of info on Anglesey a few weeks back. We located a set of training wheels that a fellow there makes but doesn't export to the states. He has a Special Needs son and developed them for his bicycle. Karen and I found them on the net but then were saddened to see he doesn't export the type we wanted. I stuck a note here on Mudcat and within 25 minutes, Gervase in London had called on them and got an order underway so that Gervase could send them to us. Oughta' be here pretty soon I think.

Anyway.....In the process we got to looking up other area info and lots of pics. We've never been there, but it looks wonderful and if we ever do make it, believe me, I'll let you know!!!

I've been getting a "boatload" of error messages tonight too, glad to know it's not my computer or my personal electromagnetic field or something. I had ancestors from Anglesey, but none of them was Elvis Presley. When I was in Llanberis, I saw a plaque with some information about Thomas Jefferson's family being from there; am I remembering right? (OK, I admit that might not be as exciting as Elvis. . .) No you're right...its not........But Jefferson did have sex with Elvis' great-great grandmother's cousin, 3 times removed when she was between marriages, her first husband having died of potato poisoning. She later wed an itinerant buttonhole maker from Albania with a passion for singing operatic lyrics to Icelandic folk tunes.

I'm afraid Billy the Bus is right - Elvis was a New Zealander - in fact if you all get out your atlases right now you will see that the islands of New Zealand (find Australia then go right a bit) are in the shape of the King in His most classic pose, the Northland peninsula being His extended right arm and the East Cape of the North Island being His head bowed down in a humble but triumphant acknowledgement of tumultuous applause.

Well at least you all damn well know where we are now!!!!

Elvis is alive and well, and working on the home baking section of Tesco's Extra in Cardiff. (a supermarket for the non UK people)

S'true, honest it is.

Well, it was 2am, and I was two southern comforts too many worse for the wear.

Here´s the truth (according to Albert Goldman). The Presleys came from Anglo-Irish stock and emigrated to America in 1740. Elvis is apparently an old english name and was the middle name of his father Vernon. So there you have it - the king was IRISH!!!

I came from South Wales - there was a fairly common surname 'Pressley' there, they presumably came from the presseli mountains of Pembrokeshire where the Stonehenge Bluestones came from. Maybe they were blue suede stones?

Hmm...and from someone (Goldman perhaps) I recall that the PRESSley pronunciation was a way of indicating a higher rung on the social ladder than PREZley (probably but not exclusively a racial differentiation--I don't understand the cues dialect gives southerners about each other).
