I assume you mean a video tape. When I started learning to square dance (Western style) I bought the beginners' books with photo illustrations. They proved to be practically useless. There are classes many places in the British Isles and the U.S. and Canada. Use a search engine on the web to look for RSCDS (Royal Scottish Country Dance Society). Most chapter's websites have links to other sources of information.

Guest, that's only one type of "Scottish Dancing".

Herge, can you tell us what kind of Scottish Dance you are interested in?
I am also assuming you want a video tape.

The several types/styles of dance I can think of are:

Scottish Country Dance

Highland Dance

Scottish Step-dance

What I need is a video for the country dance set for a celli. I play trad Irish and some Scottish but enjoy the crack involved in Scottish dancing (not the sword type!) Herge

I doubt that you will find a teaching video for Scottish country dancing, since the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society seems to feel strongly that you should learn Scottish country dance from one of their teachers in their classes.

Here is a link to a site that should help you find a RSCDS branch near you. Good luck.

There's a CD from the Riverside Ceilidh Band called 'First Footing'. It has an instruction booklet and also the first part of each tune has a caller so you do the dance with the caller and then the tune goes on without the caller. It's very easy to follow and has some of the more fun dances like Strip the Willow and The Dashing White Sergeant. You can get it from Tayberry.com, I think. They also have dancing videos. Definately worth getting because Scottish country dancing is a riot when you get going and will liven up any party.

Rather to my surprise, there are instructional videos available, some from the RSCDS itself.  Some may be found at  Scotvision.  It's an American site, but once you have the titles, you should be able to find them elsewhere.

Herge, as they have mentioned above, the Scottish Country Dancing people have videos. They also have a LOT of different dances. Just about each tune has a particular routine. I sure don't know how they remember all of them.

Thanks folks this has been a great help. I have been playing Irish music for a while and have been asked for more music that can be danced to - without the trainng of Michael Flaterly!! Scottisg dancing seems such good fun I am hoping to put a few tunes together with a caller and see what happens. Herge
