Can anyone out there help me?!!

I am trying to find the words and tune to the bawdy version of either "The Jolly Tinker" or "The Irish Tinker" or "The Highland Tinker". I beleive that they may be one and the same song but I think I have the title wrong! and also, what tune should it be sung to?

I have to sing it at a dinner next week so am desperate!!

Free beers to the succesful respondent when you visit Scotland!!

Many Thanks Andrew

Andrew,
enter [jolly tinker] in the upper right search window and you'll get more than one bawdy version, some of them have a tune to play with them.

For starters, try the "Digitrad and Forum Search" box on the main Forum page.  Type in jolly tinker and hit "Go"; you'll find several versions on the Digitrad database, and additional information in discussion threads.  That ought to keep you busy for a while!  If none of that contains exactly what you're looking for, try the other titles; then let us know if you need more help and we'll look further afield.

Malcolm

You haven't said what your audience is likely to expect. If you want thr REALLY bawdy (i.e. obscene) version, the one that starts

Oh, the dirty Hieland Tinker, he came marchin' down the Strand,
Wi his penis our his shouther an' his ballocks in his hand

let me know. The tune to that is sometimes called "The Dirty Wife".

Joe Offer, could you please insert the following at the top of this thread "Please note! Lyrics submitted below contain sexual references and may be offensive to some readers. While this material is typically provided in the genuine interests of collecting folk song materials, please press your BACK button now if these items could possibly offend you".

As a suggestion this warning text(or similar)could appear in the Newcomers FAQ to alert readers who may be sensitive to bawdy songs. This could allow Murray and others to more freely post in future.

Regards, John

you may need to register to use this function.. but registration is free, and you get to use all the fancy whistles and bells.....

Subject: Explicit Lyrics Alert?
From: Joe Offer
Date: 20 Jun 00 - 02:00 AM

Well, John, I appreciate your sentiments, but I'd hate to see us start a practice of posting "explicit lyrics" alerts. This is folk music we've got here, and folk music is full of explicit lyrics. Posting warning labels on all the explicit lyrics we have would be a huge project, although you can find lot of them by searching the database for @bawdy.
What do others think?

I agree, Joe. I can't imagine a degree of moderation here where the content of posts would be judged and labeled. All posters are free to voluntarily post warnings in their own messages, and indications in the names of the threads they create.
