I hope I am mistaken, but Barbara (BBC) has left Mudcat and has stated why in the 'Why do people start biased, inflammatory' thread. If you look at the Mudcat Resources link you'll find that her name has been taken away there, too. I think, you should at least read why a long-time contributor has gone.
Since Dan'l, after altogether four posts, when he stated he'd leave (you remember?), got two threads with dozens of pleas to come back devoted to him, I thought I'd let go by the 'over & out' of a long-time contributor not completely without comment.

Barbara, I hope it's not a final break-up, but just a break after which you come back (like, e.g., Bruce, Martin, and Roger did). We need people like you.

Wolfgang

Wolfgang, bbc had planned on handing her resources over and Max had agreed to take over a couple of months ago. Details can be found at http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=20425.

As regards the other bit, bbc knows my feelings which are the same as yours, ie. If she hs decided to leave, I hope it is just for a short break and that she does return.

Wolfgang
Thanks for highlighting this I hadn't noticed yet that Barbara had gone. All I can say is how sorry I am that someone who's been such a strong and active supporter of the 'Cat should feel this way. The amount of work that Barbara put into the 'Cat was obviously done out of a love for the place and it must have taken a fair bit of hurt for her to have chucked it in.
Barbara thanks for all you've done I hope the 'Cat becomes the sort of place you feel you can come back to sometime.
Take care now
Baz

Well, if bbc has decided bbc to drop out for a while, I'll miss her.

She has been a very helpful part of the Mudcat. Not just for the resources she has organised and shepherded - which I am glad to see will continue, as "Mudcat Resources" under Quick Links, since we badly need them.

On top of that she has said a lot of things that it was important someone said. And even when I've found myself disagreeing with over some particular thing - and that always happens in any sort of exchange of views - she has always been measured and civil in how she expressed herself, and respectful of other people's points of view. That is a quality we should always aim to keep in our exchanges, in whatever style we choose, and too often we don't. That is the kind of thing that hurts the Mudcat, especially if it drives good people away.

Anyway, I hope bbc will be back again, maybe after coming up for air for a bit.

Barbara has stated publicly (here) and privately (to many members) that her disappointment with Mudcat stems almost entirely with her lack of interest in much of it's current content. Seems fair enough. Different strokes, right?

I know she takes great pride in having started the "resources" section, but some might remember that at the beginning, many members found 'that', not to their liking, and I'm sure a few left. They probably thought that pictures and personal e-mails meant that this site was getting less "folky" and too "personal". Once again...fair enough.

It's simply "change" and it's unavoidable.

When I first joined about two years ago, a question or post on rock bands would have gotten it's share of snotty rejoiners, but now, a thread on "favourite records" will be virtually ALL rock or at the least highly commercial 'folk'. That's certainly "change".

"Thoughts of the day", "Quotes of the day", "Healing Circles", "Cyber Taverns", "Creative communal story telling", etc. These have all happened in the last couple of years, and my guess is, drove many away....and encouraged many to join.

The amount of personal information given by many in either happy or stressful times has been staggering. Shows an amazing level of trust (or reckless desperation). A few have gotten burned for this, but the vast majority have not. Amazing!

And through it all....despite everything....through defections and bored flamers, through celebrations of good times,........YOU CAN STILL ASK A QUESTION, AND GET AN ANSWER! If it's about folk music, it'll take a little longer, but you'll get it. ('cept when I needed a Panamanian folk song!)

Rather than do the "pleeeeeese come back..."thing, I'd just like to thank Barbara for her efforts. Duane and David too.

Rick

I'm with Rick on this one. Barbara has made a choice that she felt necessary, and rather than mourn the loss, I prefer to think of it as her doing what is necessary to be happy again. Rather than beg for return, I think the more eloquent tribute is just to look at this site, and what it has become with her contributions.

A question I've asked myself a few times about this and other groups I read is "do I get enough enjoyment from this group to justify the negatives?" It appears that for the moment, BBC did not. People change, and groups change, though. Here's to hoping that one or the other allows her to come back...

What Rick said.

I like Bbc a lot, and would miss her...in fact I have been missing her posts since last summer. But,people will come and go here as the tenor of the Forum changes. There are many times when I have no interest in the current threads, but that usually doesn't last. I think Bbc is objecting to the proliferation of non-music posts, but at least in the first few Tavern threads, she was one of the most active participants in them. So perhaps her mindset, rather than the Forum, has undergone the greatest change.

Lonesome EJ: I wouldn't want to speak for Barbara, but I think you may have misread the primary reason for bbc's departure. I believe she left because a few contributors (don't know how much money but lots of words) left their manners someplace else when posting replies to various threads. Barbara made a great contribution to the Mudcat (including money) and I will truly miss her.

Rick's right though. This place is going to be an ever changing place and if at anypoint a member feels a rest is called for then I say R.I.P.

I'm a new kid on the block so I don't know Barbara or any of you - but I want all of you to know what a wonderful resource you have created. Thank you. In my short experience I have only found courtesy and helpfulness at this site from people who share a love of music that has made me feel like part of a very special community.

Doug, I re-read the "Why Do Some People..." thread and would agree that I have misinterpreted bbc's reasons, as she appears to be principally objecting to the provocative nature of some thread titles, and not the non-musical subject of them.

Also, I am very grateful for the resources and the knowledge that can be found here. For someone who has discovered the magic of folk music all by his lonesome, this place has opened my eyes and my ears by degrees I did not think possible. Thank you all.

I'm with Rick on this one -- Thank you bbc, for all the hard work and dedication to the Mudcat. For those of you who maintain websites, you know how time consuming it can be, and have probably worn down a few teeth from grinding them in frustration. bbc deserves a well-earned salute from all of us fellow webkeepers for a job more than well done. Let us all hope that she finds the road smooth before her and a friendly welcome at the end.

In the past I have likened the forum to a session. I have further made the point that given the informal nature of such things, you can try to influence them towards to the aspects that you like and away from those you do not. If you reach the point where to you, the negative out weighs the positive, despite your efforts, the only thing open to you is to leave.

This has very recently happened to me with a session and in the past with the forum. When I did return to The Mudcat, amongst others, bbc was one of the first to welcome me home

.

I look forward to the day when I can say welcome home to her.

In my short time here, I've enjoyed how the 'Cat mimics the cyclical nature of life. The ebb and flow of people and community has been a real treat. Barbara is one of the kindest, compassionate and knowledgeable people in this forum, and I'll be glad when her flow brings her back to us.

Thank you for your kind, supportive words. I had thought, a week ago, that I was making a complete break w/ Mudcat. Over a period of months, I had become increasingly frustrated w/ the tone of the Discussion Forum. I was afraid that, if I stayed, I would start expressing myself negatively toward the members who frustrated me & I didn't want to do that. As Áine so kindly stated, maintaining a website takes time & it locked me into Mudcat in a very personal way. I needed to disengage to regain some balance in my thinking. Since I tranferred the site to Max last Saturday (Thanks for the compliment of undertaking it, in addition to all you do, Max!), I am feeling some better. I expect that I will mostly lurk for some period of time. I have never had a lot to contribute, musically, to the Mudcat. Because of that, I looked for a way I could contribute. As Rick stated, some supported that and some didn't. Who knows, perhaps getting to know each other better through the resources site has contributed to the current light, chatty tone. If so, to those of you who preferred what we had in the past, I sincerely apologize for my part. I will take some time for other things & will post if I feel I have something valid to contribute. My only wish for the Forum is that others might do the same--consider the validity of what you are about to express before you hit the "submit message" button.

best, always,

bbc

Nice to hear your voice again, bbc.

I don't think personal pictures and email addresses and locations and bios do anything but add favourably to the forum. (I never got around to sending in a photo, but it was on my 'to do' list.)

I'm going to copy/paste something I just wrote on a B.S. thread. I think it is relevant to this thread as well:

....................................
Quote from AliUK: "the forum is for people with like minded tastes to get together and shoot the breeze, it just so happens that we like folk and blues too".

Don't you see, friends, that this is where the struggle lies? There is a very big difference between "...dedicated to folk and blues" and "just so happens that we like folk and blues too".

B.S. threads can be fun, and can be a way of getting to know each other as whole people.

But, just THINK about it. If "shooting the breeze" is your PRIMARY goal here, then you might be hurting the forum as much as a flamer. If you're bored, try reading and posting to a non-B.S. threads. There's a whole lot of worthwhile stuff going on in there.

Gee, bbc,

What a flow of emotions you generated for me. You were a central figure in my positive experience at the Getaway and I always enjoyed your heart-felt postings. And just who would be pouring the foul black stuff at the tavern, anywho? Then the good news that you will stick around and watch. I don't get here often anymore (I hope to remedy that in a month or two). I would have been saddened to think that I might never hear from a good friend again. Say Hi to Duane and David for me.

BBC -- you have been one of the major lights in the great constellation of the Cat. It was your work that first showed the face of the Mudcat community as a deeper and more vital force than just lyrics and fretting threads. It brought the Cat to life. In that respect you have done a greatly good thing as far as I am concerned and you will always be appreciated for it.

You are a kind lady of patience and I will alway be thankful for the wonderful things you have done for us Mudcatters.

Wishing you all the best in whatever you do bbc.
