Subject: Sheet music to Blackest Crow or Time Draws..
From: trein@iglou.com

Hello! I'm looking for the sheet music to an American (I think) traditional waltz called "The Blackest Crow," also known as "The Time Draws Near." Can anyone supply this or suggest sites I might try? Thanks! --Tony (Cincinnati)

Tony,

Doubt if there is any sheet music for The Blackest Crow, but I would suggest you get a copy of an album of Tommy Jarrell (don't remember which one has it, but the folks at County Records in Floyd, Va could tell you). Also I believe Brad Leftwich also recorded it on one of his albums. Check with Merrimac or County on that one. Good luck.

THE TIME DRAWS NEAR

The time draws near, my dearest dear
When you and I must part
And no one knows the inner griefs
Of my poor aching heart
It's what I suffer for your sake
The one I love most dear
I wish that I could go with you
Or you might tarry here

I wish my breast was made of glass
Wherein you might behold
Oh, there you'd find your name lies writ
In letters made of gold
Oh, there you'd find your name lies writ
Believe in what I say
You are the only one I love
Until my dying day

My dear old father's hard to leave
My mother's on my mind
But for your sake, I'd go with you
I'd leave them both behind
But for your sake, I'd go with you
Oh, Mother, fare thee well
For fear I'll never see you no more
While here on earth we dwell

And when you're in some foreign land
Think on your absent friend
And when the wind blows cold and clear
A line or two please send
And when the wind blows cold and clear
Please send it home to me
That I may know by your hand writ
How things have gone with thee

The blackest crow that ever flew
Will surely turn to white
If ever I prove false to you
Bright day will turn to night
Bright day will turn to night, my love
The elements will mourn
If ever I prove false to you
The seas will rage and burn

Tony,

I have been searching everywhere I can think of for the sheet music for 'The Blackest Crow' also. No luck yet. Tim O'brien has an excellent ( best I've heard) rendition of the song on his CD ... 'Songs From The Mountain' from Howdy Skies Records.

Bruce Molsky also does it -- and very well -- (i believe on his CD "Lost Boy" - which is wonderful all around.)

Bruce got it from Tommy Jarrel.

Bruce's website is here

ok, very well is being a bit understated - Bruce does the finest rendition of the song I have ever heard -- and even better live.

I have painstakingly scribed the words to this song by listening to it over and over and over again.

I believe I have the words right...or, at least close enough. Once I figure out the chord progressions, I'll post them here.

THE BLACKEST CROW

As time got near my dearest dear when you and I must part
How little you know of the grief and woe in my poor aching heart
Tis but I'd suffer for your sake believe me dear it's true
I wish that you were staying here or I was going with you.

I wish my breast were made of glass wherein you might behold
Upon my heart your name lies wrote in letters made of gold
In letters made of gold my love believe me when I say
You are the one that I will adore until my dying day.

The blackest crow that ever flew would surely turn to white
If ever I prove false to you bright day will turn to night
Bright day will turn to night my love the yellow birds will mourn
If ever I prove false to you the seas will rage and burn.

I too have listened to this song about a zillion times, and was stumped on the line "tis but I suffer for your sake".

I don't agree with the next to the last line that you've intrepreted. I believe it is "the elements will mourn" instead of yellow birds.

nubbin.

Check out Heidi Talbot...she has a version on her album. I can't remember which one but I love this song. The words are clear on her version.

Heh. Sorry. Chords aren't lined up right, but you get the picture. Different font in this box than when it's posted.
    Is it better now?
