I missed it too, so what was/is the news? I did assume it was the Mike T, not the Ian T. Isn't that a sad note on life? Yes, Mike is an animal, but we all are animals; Mike is just an un-domesticated one. Sort of like Big Cats. Cute as kits, but never turn your back.

Bob; you've not been listening; whatever mike-the-animal might have been doing, Ian has been putting out some absolutely (IMHO) fabulous stuff, such as "Fifty Years Ago," & "Navajo Rug," both of which were recorded by Tom Mays (Great albums! & probably others). My Canadian contacts say his newer stuff is even better yet; Check it out.

Cheers, BK

Bob:

Sad to say, musical "CAREERS" have NOTHING to do w/good songs. They are far more complex (devious? labrynthine?) than that. Gordon Lightfoot's CARREER also seems to have peaked. I'm still going to see Gord in a few months.

Meanwhile, literally back at the ranch in some cases, in the healthy-and-growing world of Cowboy Poetry & Song, Ian Tyson's recognition, fame & respect is growing.

Seriously; have you LISTENED to his new material? (& I NEVER buy stocks, so that's OK & there ain't never been no acountin' for an individual's tastes; if you think - after a careful listenin' - that his newer stuff's crap, it's ok; lot's of folks think it's outstanding. it's OK, there's room for all of us.)

Cheers, BK

hey i wouldnt say nothing bad about ian tyson if i hadnt heard what he has done and ok lets substitute the word songwriting for career his songwriting is not what it was in the sixties i mean it just isnt but if you still like it that is good but he was writing classics back in his heyday um unless you consider his new cowboy stuff better

Ya, I like it. A lot. So does my wife. At least as much as his old stuff, & that's sayin' a lot. But I also never really liked the stereotypical folk-superstar Bob Dylan very much - liked a few of his songs, but liked Ian & Sylvia, Lightfoot, Tom Paxton, etc. much more, so again, personal taste...

But I certainly do think Tyson's new stuff is great & would highly reccomend his new work to fellow 'catters.

Cheers, BK

I lost all repect for Ian Tyson when he bit the ear of Evander Holyshit, and I vowed I would never listen to another one of his records again. And Why they even let him into Scotland where they worship Wild Bill Elliott and Derroll Evans is beyond me. All the best. Seamus

MAD Mike Tyson is set to be banned from boxing in Britain after going berserk in the ring.

The convicted rapist was out of control during and after his 38-second fight fiasco against American Lou Savarese.

At one point, he launched a sickening tirade against British world heavyweight champ Lennox Lewis . . . threatening to rip out his heart AND eat his children.>P> Tyson horrified officials when he continued to pummel hapless Savarese as referee John Coyle went to stop the farce.

Ref Coyle ended up on the canvas at Hampden Park, Glasgow, as raging Tyson hit him with his arm as he tried to get at his defenceless opponent.

Tyson's animal-like behaviour was taken as a further sign that his mental condition has become dangerously unstable.

Now shocked British Boxing Board of Control chiefs are set to call an emergency meeting. Fearing for the image of the sport, they are ready to bar Tyson from appearing here again.

Tyson, 33, had come to Britain in the hope of reviving his flagging career because he is a reviled figure in America. But now his hopes of a string of easy pay-days here are in ruins.

Ex-British champ Julius Francis, who Tyson defeated in January, said: "Mike should be stripped of his licence." Lewis's manager Frank Maloney said: "Put him in hospital."

Commentator Jim Watt, a former world champ, said: "There's no place in boxing for Tyson.

" And fellow pundit and ex-pro Barry McGuigan said: "Tyson should have been disqualified for hitting the ref - he's a devil."

Tyson's troubled week-long stay in Britain began with an unseemly row with his main ally, millionaire promoter Frank Warren.

It is claimed the two men blamed each other for an unpaid bill of £630,000 for gems which Tyson had snapped up on his January visit to Britain.

Warren, who lay low after being allegedly hurt in a fracas, turned up for the fight.

The boxer had seemed in a dark mood in the build-up to the fight. There were strong rumours he was on anti-depressant tablets and was in no physical or mental condition to step into the ring.

Fans, who paid up to £500 for a ticket, booed after the fight

NICE GUY EH. ljc

To tell you the truth, I wouldn't want to go anywhere near Mike Tyson. In wrestling, we're taught to always be in control. People get hurt when we make mistakes. Mike Tyson seems to always lose control. It would be very scary for a wrestler to be in with him.

I saw all of those things in one half-hour TV show on WWF wrestling. But that's not a real sport like boxing, is it?

On Ian ------ I wasn't born till 1967 so maybe I missed what bob jr says is Ian's career peak. I didn't discover him till about 1992 whenever I got into cowboy music, which really is my first and truest love, unfortunately there ain't much demand for cowboy music in Tennessee. Anyway I finally got to see Ian last year at the now-closed Caffe Milano, and he was just SPLENDID, I tell you, SPLENDID. I absolutely LOVE the songs on the Lost Herd album. So I will not take any Ian-dissing lying down. If you don't like what he's doing now, that's your business but don't go discouraging others who might really enjoy his work. And as an aside, I also love Tom Russell, who writes a lot of songs with Ian.

On Mike ----- he's an idiot. Here in Tennessee we might say he's "no 'count." Perhaps he's been knocked in the head one too many times. In that case, he needs a doctor. I have to agree, though, that he probably shouldn't be in the boxing ring anymore. The hospital is probably where he needs to be.

I think we should let him continue. No man ever need be a total failure, he can always serve as a bad example. People like him could kill boxing for good. Would anyone really weep? I sure as hell wouldn't. It's barbaric and crooked. reasons enough to ban it once and for all. But, then I'm not a sports fan. I do have some voyeuristic tendencies, but it aint to watch silly shit like which bunch of glandular cases wins or loses some ball kicking/throwing/hitting thing. I played baseball as a kid, also did some boxing as a young adult, but, hell, I grew up!!

Mike Tyson continues to be the biggest embarrassment in the history of sport (with Dennis Rodman a distant second). I used to be a big fan of boxing, but Mike and Don King could ruin what was once one of the finest sports going.

Had he bit someone's ear when he was on the street he would have gone straight back to the clink as it would have been a violation of his parole. It's shame that he has almost ruined the heavyweight division as I think that both Holyfield and Lewis are class acts, even though I'm upset at Lewis for turning his back on Canada, the country he was raised in and where he learned to box.

Well done the people of Scotland however, for failing to turn up in their droves. The fight lost an estmated one milion pounds for its promoter. The main objection that was raised in Scotland was that any other convicted rapist would nt be allowed to enter into the UK, but an exception was made in Tyson's case, beause of who he was. love, john P.S. I always liked "You were on my mind" but that was probably Sylvia?
