...from the Ruby Pickens Tartt folk song collection:

I aint gonna lay my religion down

No, no,no,no, my Lord
I ain't gonna lay my 'ligion down.
No,no,no,no, my Lord,
I ain't gonna lay my 'ligion down.

Well, de tallest tree in er Paradise,
I ain't gonna lay my 'ligion down.
Well, de Christian call it dat treee of life,
I ain't gonna lay my 'ligion down.

chorus

I wonder what Satin grumberlin' 'bout,
I ain't gonna lay my 'ligion down.
Well, he's chained in Hell, en he can't come out,
I ain't gonna lay my 'ligion down.

If ' ligion was a thing money could buy,
I ain't gonna lay my 'ligion down.
Well, de rich, would live, en de po' would die,
I ain't gonna lay my 'ligion down.

Ef de rich don't pray, to Hell dey'll go,
I ain't gonna lay my 'ligion down.

Want to know de reason I walk so bold?
I ain't gonna lay my 'ligion down.
Well, I got Jesus all in my soul,
I ain't gonna lay my 'ligion down.

Yo, Willi O... I really must go back to work....

....well, harpgirl...folk music has celebrated freedom in the unites states for many years, hasn't it? What better freedom than religious, or free speech? although I am not in favor of the right to bear arms...harpgirl

Hi Art, I thought this Ruby Pickens Tartt collection song was a good one to provide, given our latest spirited discussion of religion. But as you can see, no one took the bait...

...glad you did Susan. I am going to learn some of these wonderful songs and sing them with Dr. Sound. Of course, some are derivative of well known hymns which many of us already know!

For anyone like me who finds this forum years after its creation. This version from the 1920s has entirely different lyrics.
