Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Just a bowl of Butter Beans From: paddymac Date: 29 Jun 00 - 02:22 PM Kendall - Add me to the list of those who would love to get those lyrics. I first heard it sung (actually, the only time I've heard it) sitting around the fire at a hunting camp on cool evening, long after the guns were put away and most of us had taken a shine to the 'shine. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Just a bowl of Butter Beans From: BK Date: 01 Jul 00 - 11:14 PM We video'd a group singing this, to the tune we mostly know as "just a closer walk w/thee," so it's likely the same one. We heard it at the Big Muddy Folk Festival in Booneville, MO, done by a group from southeast MO, around "the cape." They always blame it on someone else - I wanna say Doc Watson - but I may be wrong - & they always apologize to the audience, as they really don't want to hurt any feelings. It doesn't really parady the song, just borrows the tune. It's cute; at any rate, my wife & I both like it. The words SHOULD be easy to get off the tape - been meaning to learn it anyway, as well as a lot of other great songs I'm hearing here in MO. So, if I get moment, I'll take 'em down & try to post them here. If no one beats me to it. Cheers, BK |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Just a bowl of Butter Beans From: BK Date: 04 Jul 00 - 10:34 AM Thanx for adding the line breaks, PA. (I was much too tired to get that much out of my remaining brain cells last night) Harpgirl; it wasn't Dave & Cathy, but it was at the "Big Muddy" festival they help run; "big Jim" & 2 of his pals - I hate to admit it but CRS syndrome temporarily blocks me from remembering their group name - from the Cape Girardeau area do this song, & also MC the open mike every year. They also explain that the old hymnals say the tune for "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" is an old folksong melody, so things sometime come full circle.. GREAT little folk festival - worth travelling to. "The Big Muddy Folk Festival" in spring - usually April - every year, in Booneville, Missouri. Bob Dyer, Dave 'n Cathy, Jim from the cape & many volunteers work really hard to make it so, & always have a mix of regional, local & national talent w/something (actually many things) for everyone. This year we had John McCutcheon and Cindy Mangsun & Steve Gillette; they were fantastic.. Y'all come!! Cheers, gotta go to work, BK |

Subject: The Butter Bean Song From: GUEST,Big Byrd Date: 09 Mar 03 - 05:07 PM I'm trying to find words--various versions--to a song I first heard Jimmie Driftwood sing, called "The Butter Bean Song". I've located a version credited to Little Jimmy Dickens, but it differs from Driftwood's version. I know it's been recorded, but I don't know by whom. Any help or guidance? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Just a bowl of Butter Beans From: Joe Offer Date: 09 Mar 03 - 05:30 PM Hi, Big Byrd. I moved you over here to this thread, which I think is about the same song. Also take a look at the Cornbread and Butter Beans thread (click). If you have versions we don't have, please post them. Also post what you know of the Jimmie Driftwood version. that will give us a good start. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Just a bowl of Butter Beans From: GUEST,Big Byrd Date: 09 Mar 03 - 05:49 PM Hey! BK and all the rest. I am the guy who did the song in Boonville at Cathy and Dave's Big Muddy festival! When I learned the song from Jimmie Driftwood there were only three verses he sang. I'm trying to rundown more. The "old Jack" verse and the "natural gas" verse are ones that I have added (along with a couple of others). You have no idea how astounded I am to see you refering to my group (The Shade Tree Folk Company) and remembering our singing of it! |
Subject: ADD: Butter Beans From: GUEST,Q Date: 09 Mar 03 - 06:09 PM Butter Beans (Little Jimmie Dickens) Just a bowl of butter beans Pass the cornbread if you please I don't want no collard greens All I want is a bowl of butter beans. Just a little piece of country ham Pass the butter and the jam Pass the biscuits if you please And some more of the good ol' butter beans. Bread and gravy is all right A turnip sandwich is a delight But my children all still scream For another bowl of butter beans. When they lay my bones to rest Place a rose upon my chest Plant those blooming evergreens But all I want, honey, is a bowl of butter beans. Just a bowl of butter beans Pass the cornbread if you please I don't want no collard greens All I want is a bowl of butter beans. Butter Beans |
Subject: ADD: Just a bowl of Butter Beans From: GUEST,Big Byrd Date: 09 Mar 03 - 06:20 PM For what it's worth, here are the verses I use for the Butter Bean Song---to the tune of "Just a Closer Walk With Thee". The stared verses are the ones I learned from Jimmie Driftwood. He said he got them from a professer in West Virginia. Ch: *Just a bowl of butter beans Pass the cornbread, if you please. I don't want no collard greens, I just want a great big bowl of butterbeans! *Just a slice of country ham; Fried potatoes, strawberry jam. I'm afraid I might bust my jeans If I eat another big bowl of butter beans. *See that pretty girl sittin' over there? She's got ruby red lips and that fine (you pick the color) hair. She's not expecting like she seems; She's just had a great big bowl of butter beans! *See that big, fat, ugly lad? He's made everybody mad. They don't love him, by no means- He's the hog that ate the last of the butter beans! I guess you've heard that old Jack's dead. He froze to death last night in his bed. The covers kept flying off; it seems He'd just had a great big bowl of butter beans! Funnel-shaped clouds fill me with fear, And mushroom-shaped clouds mean Death is near. But the scaryest clouds I've ever seen Are those little brown clouds made by them butter beans! (Insert name) likes turkey, and she likes duck, too. Chicken or pheasant, any bird will do. But if you wanna see her smile, and this is the truth, All you gotta do is give ol' ______ a goose! The energy chrisis has been solved, at last. Everybody's gonna heat using natural gas. We'll capture that gas; boil that steam. Man's greatest discovery is that little old butter bean! An alternate line for the last verse, second line is: We're gonna hook a pipe line up to everybody's yas, yas, yas Enjoy the song! Big Byrd |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Just a bowl of Butter Beans From: GUEST,TJ in San Diego Date: 06 Sep 07 - 04:44 PM I first heard this little ditty at a place called "Mickie Finn's" in San Diego, CA, in about 1968 or '69, by a great local saxophone player (and commercial photographer) with the unlikely name of "Birdie" Carter. When you see him, you know why he has the nickname. I know he had played in New Orleans and other areas, probably picking up the material somewhere along the way. He only did the first verse, as I recall. It's great to see the others. He is still around the area. I'll have to try and learn his source. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Butterbeans / Just a Bowl of Butter Beans From: GUEST Date: 16 Sep 19 - 11:43 AM Elliott Chavers recorded a 1963 R&B/early-rock instrumental called "Butter Beans". The tune is completely unrelated to the "Butter Beans" (or Butterbeans) song with lyrics that everyone has heard. Bob Cain was the first to record the "Butter Beans" song people have heard with the lyrics. He did it in 1965 (and again in 1969). His orig. version credits Charles D. (Charlie) Colvin & Calvin Burns. His later version just credits Charlie Colvin. There is a great video on YouTube that has both of Cain's versions back to back. Little Jimmy Dickens recorded his version in 1966 and it credited Chavers, but that was an error. His label probably saw the earliest release with the same title and went with it. He definitely covered Cain's song written by Colvin. Little David Wilkins recorded his version in 1974 and it credits Colvin. Little David Wilkins recorded a duet version in 1987 with Johnny Russell and it credits Colvin. This song has been covered by many others, including Papa Joe Smiddy. |
