These may be on the links provided, I didn't read them yet. "Garden, no plants would it grow/Eggplant", and the risque one, no offense intended to anyone, but the wordplay is good (referring to the hen laying eggs in the first verse)--"Rooster, he would not do his job, wouldn't go near a hen, he would not do his job/caught that (wince) gay rooster, right off of his guard/He's laying hens now".

I had a brother, no girls had he.
I had a brother, no girls had he.
My wife said honey, you're brothers funny
Your poor old brother, who had no girls

One day that rooster, got into our yard
He caught my brother, right off his guard.
He's laying chicks now, like he never used ta
Evers since that rooster, got into our yard.

Learned this from a jesuit brother.

Well! Thanks a lot. I can hear the tune plain as day, I even remember some of the words, but I can't remember where or when I ever learned it. Somehow, I think it might have been a pop hit, because I seem to hear it in chorus in my head.

My copy of 'Belafonte Returns to Carnegie Hall' recorded 2 May 1960 credits the song "Chickens" to Hellerman-Corman-Carter.

"My wife said honey, we're losing money..."

Apart from what's in the DT, if you scroogle "no eggs would they lay" (to avoid the other rooster song), you get dozens of versions, many from scouting and campfire song sites. To the original, introduced into the folk repertoire by Bob Gibson back in the 50s, counselors and others have added lots of verses.

Here are three versions more or less at random. The correct title is "They're Layin' Eggs Now," or "Chickens" -- the Rooster Song is usually used for "I had a rooster, my rooster pleased me." Nonetheless, here is

The Rooster Song

(Leader calls) We had some chickens!
(Others answer) We had some chickens!
etc.

We had some chickens
No eggs would they lay
We had some chickens
No eggs would they la-ay

So I said honey
This sure ain't funny
We're loosing money
No eggs would they lay.

Then came that rooster
Right into our yard
He caught them chickens
Right off of their guard

They're laying eggs now
Like they never used to
The day that rooster
Came into our yard

We had some milk cows
No milk would they give
We had some milk cows
No milk would they gi-ive

So I said honey
this sure ain't funny
were loosing money
no milk would they give.

Then came that rooster
Right into our yard
He caught them milk cows
Right off of their guard

They're giving egg nog
Like they never used to
Since the day that rooster
Came into our yard.

We had some elephants
No tusks would they grow
We had some elephants
No tusks would they grow

So I said...

Then came that rooster
Right into our yard
He caught them elephants
Right off of their guard

They're laying eggs now
Of solid ivory
Since the day that rooster
Came into our yard

We had a rooster
Who was awfully gay
We had a rooster
Who was awfully gay

So I said....

Then came that butch rooster
Right into our yard
He caught that gay rooster
Right off of his guard

They're doing things now
That they really shouldn't
Since the day that rooster
Came into our yard!

OK, hadn't heard the elephant or the scientist verses before. Hee.

Here's the verse I've been known to toss in:

We had an old sword, no one would it slay.
We had an old sword, no one would it slay.
My wife said, "Honey, this isn't funny, we're losing money."
We had an old sword, no one would it slay.
One day a rooster came into our yard
And caught that old sword right off its guard.
Now it's EGGS-calibur, just like it used-ter.
Ever since that rooster came into our yard.

The first time I heard a quartet of high-school students
perform this at summer camp,
they too were drawn to the conclusion,
"he's layin' hens, now, just like he useta ... "

but their final verse took a different route
by which to approach that punch-line.

We gotta rooster, who's dog-gone queer;
We gotta rooster, who's dog-gone queer.
Said to my honey, "we're losing money,
'Cos we gotta rooster, who's dog-gone queer."
THEN
came a Psy-chia-trist into our yard,
He caught that rooster right off his guard ... and so to bed.
