Looking for words to "Brooklyn Love Song" - a humorous ballad done best in a Brooklyn exagerated accent. I heard it on a Collins tape (never released) in the 60s.

Please respond to dr-mike@pacbell.net

"Brooklyn Love Song" was recorded by Red Nichols and His Five Pennies, with vocalist Dottie O'Brien. It appears on the album "Happy Jazz", Magic CD 84, 1998.

"My Brooklyn Love Song" was recorded by Marion Hutton with Tex Beneke and the Glenn Miller Orchestra, and released in 1948. It appears on the various artists compilation "Manhattan Serenades: Classic Songs of New York", Jass CD 641, 1993.

It was used in the 1948 film, "If You Knew Susie," starring Phil Brown, Eddie Cantor, Douglas Fowley, and Allyn Joslyn.

That's all the info I was able to find.

Still no lyrics, but a bit more information:

MY BROOKLYN LOVE SONG
Words and music by George Tibbles and Ramez ("Ramey") Idriss
Triangle Music Corp., 1947

From the film "If You Knew Susie" (1948)
Sung and danced by Margaret Kerry and Dickie Humphreys

Also sung by Arthur Godfrey on the album "TV Calendar Show/Visit to New York" (2 LPs reissued as one CD) Collectibles Records, 2006.

You can see the cover of the sheet music, but not the whole song, at the web site of the Brooklyn Public Library.

This is from a sample at Allmusic.com of Arthur Godfrey's singing:

...wise an' dish me up a kiss or two, hey? (Yeah, hey!)
If a tree can grow in Brooklyn, so can you, hey? (Yeah, hey!)
You're lousin' up my Brooklyn love song. (....)

Get a load o' romance. T'row the scen'ry a glance.
Dere's a moon, dere's a river, golly gee!
While we're makin' our plans....

IF you write to the librarian and ask real pretty, they will probably inform you how to get a copy of the song. They may even direct you to the music publisher so you can buy the sheet music.

Here's one version (as with many jazz songs, lyrics are often tweaked)...

Verse:

Why is he recalcitrant in Flatbush?
Why is he so timid and so shy?
Why is he reluctant in Canarsie?
And why in Coney won't he even try?

Brooklyn Bridge is falling down
But he won't make the mating sound...

Chorus:

Its spring hey and the birds are chirping high up in the tree hey
Between them birds and all them noisy little bees hey
They're messing up my brooklyn love song

Get wise hey come on and dish me up a little kiss or two hey
If a tree can grow in brooklyn so can you hey
Stop messin' up my brooklyn love song

Get a load of romance, give the scenery a glance
There's a moon, there's a river, golly gee
While you're holdin' my hand and the scenery is grand
We can watch the barges throw the garbage out to the sea

Look-y here hey lovers sittin' on the stoop they're pitching woo hey
Lucky you you've got the stoop right here with you hey
Stop messin' up my brooklyn love song

Marion Hutton recorded "My Brooklyn Love Song" in 1948 on 78 rpm Record MGM 10160. The flip side by Marion was "Little White Mouse"

I appreciate her songs.

Margaret Kerry.
I sang and danced to this song in the film, "If You Knew Susie." My partner was Dick Humphreys. The film starred Eddie Cantor and Joan Davis ...
I was supposed to be 13 because Joan Davis didn't want to have a daughter older than that however I graduated High School while doing that picture. The great Nick Castle set the routine where Dick and danced on two table tops, I was told that we were introducing the song.
I still entertain .. sing and tap dance ... because I am the the original reference model of Walt Disney's Tinker Bell for the film Peter Pan ... and the sequals. I'm traveling to Mt.Airy's 27 year of Mayberry Days (Andy Griffith Show) Ihought I might resurrect Brooklyn Love Song for the tap dance at the end of my hour show. Loved ready your stories ... Blessings from Tinker Bell and me
