Subject: corrymeela From: GUEST,Camille Date: 06 Jul 00 - 05:53 PM Hi. Does anyone care to share the words and chords to this song...also any info about it. Much appreciate it. I am a banjo player, but thought I would do this on the guitar. THANKS CAMILLE |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: corrymeela From: Turtle Date: 07 Jul 00 - 03:23 PM Well, if it's the one I'm thinking of, it's by Tom Paxton and I have it on a tape at home--I'll check over the weekend and bring the lyrics in on Monday (no Internet at home, alas). I don't have the chords, though--anyone else? The chorus is something like: Oh, Corrymeela, I need to rest myself, I need to discover myself again. Oh, Corrymeela, I need a peaceful vision. Oh let my only decision be to lay down my sorrows. Is that it? As I remember the story, it's about a peace center (Corrymeela) in Ireland that Paxton visited. He told the story in a concert I went to about 15 years ago, and that's about all I remember. Maybe there was something about Catholic and Protestant kids coming together there, like some of the recent peace initiatives bringing together Palestinian and Jewish kids in Israel? Anyway, I'll bring in the lyrics on Monday. |
Subject: Thanks for the info. From: GUEST,Camille Date: 08 Jul 00 - 11:04 AM Turtle... Thanks, I feel I'm connected here. I have been experiencing Mudcat vicariously through my friend and music buddy "Nightowl." I am an ol' timey banjo player starting to hear the stories versus years of playing all the tunes. Having a good time developing the banjo as my accompaniment instrument and getting to sing all sorts of terrific songs I'm now HEARING! Thanks again. The chords, from anyone would be wonderful...I'm sure they will come. Well, off to Summerfest, New Bedford...on foot, as I live in the Historic District. This is a great festival loaded with talent from all over. I LOVE MY TOWN! Add a handful of Tall Ships and a newly assembled Blue Whale and It makes a great vacation spot. By Camille |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: corrymeela From: Turtle Date: 11 Jul 00 - 12:12 PM Hi Camille, Well, I haven't been able to find that Tom Paxton tape over the weekend. I even went to the extreme of listening to some of those old tapes to make sure I knew what was on them--you know, the ones that say "Bartok" and are really Kate Wolf in concert! I know Corrymeela is on his "Even a Grey Day" album which came out in the early 80s. I'll keep looking, but without the tape I'm kind of stuck. Anyone else have access to these lyrics? I'm in kind of the opposite position from you, I guess--have been singing for years & know a lot of songs, and just started playing fiddle and am beginning to learn the tunes. It's a whole other way of looking at the music! Lucky you to be in New Bedford & heading off to Summerfest. How was it? |
Subject: Turtle...RE: Lyr/Chords Req: corrymeela From: GUEST,Camille Date: 12 Jul 00 - 10:50 AM Kate Wolf...be still my heart. Now SHE has shared so many good songs. Thanks for looking for Corrymeela, my search will continue as long as it takes. Right now I am working on The Holy Modal Rounders "Sweet William" as played on banjo so interestingly by Peter Stampfel. After 20 years these characters are together again and performing in the Boston area next week, so I am so curious to see how the years have sculpted them! Summerfest was the success we have all come to expect. There were musicians from all nooks and cranies of the globe. As usual, the highlight was the after hours gathering on Saturday night. John Roberts of JR and Tony Barrand duo fame was playing my banjo and singing great songs in an endless song "duel" with one of our local Scots. What a treat, and only one of so many! We have a large talented music group around this area. Lots of great traditional singers...short on 'ol timey folk though. Very short on fiddlers, to my dismay, as my major passion for southern shit kicking or dancing (depending how sophisticated you consider yourself) music really needs the fiddle! Well, back to work. Thanks again for your efforts. Camille |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: corrymeela From: Turtle Date: 17 Jul 00 - 12:03 PM Hooray! Found the right tape over the weekend, and here's what I've got for the lyrics to Tom Paxton's Corrymeela: Intro: O Ireland, O Corrymeela, O hill of harmony I need your loving people I was angry with myself, I was lost and confused There was no unkind word or bitter thought I hadn't used All the anger I carried was bound to explode I was walking in a rage down a long hard road Chorus: O Corrymeela, I need to rest myself I need to discover myself again O Corrymeela, I need a peaceful vision O let my only decision be to lay down my sorrows I was sure that I was right, but I knew that I was wrong I couldn't feel one way about anything for very long The blame for all my troubles pointed everywhere but me I was as full of hate as anyone you'll ever see Chorus Bridge: Just to feel the anger leaving me Just to feel the burning bitterness die O show me the sea, let its music heal me Show me a field where I can lie I was tearing myself apart, I was my own worst enemy There didn't seem to be an answer to my misery I knew that I was wrong, I was sure that I was right I was cursing the darkness and blowing out the light Chorus On the recording I have, Paxton sings the bridge and the last verse again, and ends with the chorus. Hope this is helpful, Camille. |
