Hi,

There is a song about a fox hunt in which every stanza ends with "galloping, galloping, galloping by." The last two (or so) lines go something like: "Would I be telling the way he went - galloping, galloping, galloping by - No, not I."

Does anyone know song title and/or author and/or lyrics? The song is quoted in the kids book from 1957 "Miracles on Maple Hill" by Virginia Sorensen, but the book does not credit the song.

I did a Hotbot search of the Web and found thirty pages that had the phrase "galloping, galloping, galloping." I checked the pages that seemed likely, but none had the poem. I wouldn't have thought "galloping, galloping, galloping" would be such a common phrase, but there was headless horseman stuff in there, and a poem by Erica Jong, and a rhyme for bouncing babies on your knee (complete with a caution that you shouldn't bounce baby too roughly).

I've done a bunch of web-surfing/searching too, but haven't found anything with those lines. Lots of other "FOX" poems/songs, though...*sigh*

What is so frustrating is that I *KNOW* this song/poem exists!

Hi, booklover - can you give us any more? Is this a children's poem, for adults, or what? Can you give us a first line? I have lots of poetry anthologies, and a first line (and more, if you have it) might help me find the poem.

I won't be able to lay my hands on a copy of that book until next Tuesday, but If you haven't gotten an answer by then, don't give up hope. The song didn't deal with George Washington, did it? I remember hearing one in elementary school (and seeing it in one of the school songbooks) that started off "Young Washington had never heard of a motor-car or a train/He wouldn't have understood a owrd about an air-o-plain./ But galloping, galloping, how he went galloping..."

Unfortunately, that is all I have. It is a kids poem/song. It is about a fox hunt, where hunters are chasing a fox, the kid sees the fox go by, and he won't tell the hunters where it went.

I'm searching for this to help a librarian who is trying to help a patron. The patron remembers the poem/song from school in the 20s. (Hmmmmm...Now I read that again and realize the poem/song must be older than I thought 1920s or earlier, not 1950s)! I remembered that lines from the poem/song were in the book "Miracles on Maple Hill" by Virginia Sorensen. The book does not quote the entire poem/song, nor does it credit the title or author. ARGH!!

I don't have the book here, (my copy is in storage) or I'd quote you exactly what lines I have.

I was able to get more on the poem/song. Here is how it is quoted in "Miracles on Maple Hill" with accompanying story lines:

Beginning on page 80:

Then, she thought, if Daddy would sing the one about the hunters and the wonderful kind boy who wouldn't tell them where the fox went, Joe would understand what she was going to say when she went upstairs. He couldn't help but understand, after that song.

"Well all right. Just those two then," Daddy said. "You know, Lee, I'm getting so I can do the hunting song pretty song pretty well again."

And he really could. The first verse about the hunters coming and the horns blowing and the scarlet coats went really fast. Marly opened the door to the stairs so Joe would be sure to hear.

"'Say there, youngster,' the huntsmen cry,
'Say, have you seen the fox go by?
Galloping, galloping, galloping, galloping,
Galloping, galloping over the hill?'"

"Now," Marly thought, and opened the door a little wider. This was the verse for Joe to hear.

"But would I be telling them? No, not I!
That I saw the fox go wearily by?
Wearily panting, worn and spent,
Would I be telling the way he went,
Galloping . . . galloping . . . galloping . . ."

Daddy was wonderful, the way he made the words sound slow and tired as if the poor fox was ready to drop. Then suddenly he shouted the last two words: "No! Not I!"

Well, Booklover, I've checked eavry resourcs I could think of, but didn't have any luck. What you've provided may be enough to trigger somebody's memory. If you don't get a response, try refreshing the thread in a couple of weeks - use the "filter" on the forummenu page and look for a thread with "fox" in the title.

Hi--I'm interested in finding the tune for this song. I see no one was able to track it down in the year 2000, but maybe someone else will be able to.

Per Google Books, it has been printed in The Rasp, published by the (U.S.) Cavalry School in 1928, but only a snippet is available online.

Guest, could you tell us more about the song, such as where you found or learned it? Do you know the tune?

Julie Andrews recorded the song on an album titled The Lass With the Delicate Air. I found the album on Spotify, and I'm enjoying it. Not one I've heard before, and I've had a crush on Julie Andrews since I was eleven.

A few changes/corrections to the version posted by GUEST above. I have it on a vinyl album of Julie Andrews' favorite songs! I don't think she had the same title though, she may have called it "The Fox Hunt" or some such. It's been a few years since I listened to it. Here's how I remember it:

Wow! I did a websearch for these words, as I couldn't remember the first verse - and I do know the tune, as my father, who was a marvelous singer, used to sing this. I may even have played the piano part with him. So - I do know the tune. If anyone is interested, I could try to find a way to transmit it!

This sounds an unlikely story. Foxhounds chase on scent and not sight as do Beagles. It was probably written by some townie who didn't know any better, bless her/his little cotton socks!
