This is my favourite summer folk festival and we have attended it for many years plus the Celtic college that precedes it using performers as instructors in the week leaqding up to the festival.

The bad news is that ever accomodation in Goderich will be booked by now. Be prepared to commute from a neighbouring town unless you are very, very lucky!

I forgot to mention that there is the "Celtic College" preceding the festival. The college runs from August 7 to 10 in Goderich. Classes are taught by folks who you would see at the festival in such subject areas as craft art (blacksmithing, celtic design, jewelry, stained glass, stonecarving etc), dance, language, culture, storytelling, instrument repair, bodhran construction, sound, music (20 or so instruments), etc.

For more information see the festival website mentioned above.

Thought you'd like to know. Mooh.

I have just returned online after a week and a half or so of reconfiguring my home office for my new computer. And Joe Offer pm'ed me re: this festival. Unfortunately I am booked that weekend. But I certainly want to make an effort to attend this one next year. What a lineup!! Lunasa alone is worth the trip. Thanks, Joe, for letting me know about it. And Mooh, I hope you will keep us posted on the date of next years event. I will want to get in on this early.

All the best,

Mick

Tell Pierre Shryer, I said Hi!!

Have played more than a few times with the man, and he's not bad at all (MY ASS!!! He's one of Canada's BEST!) He's from a community 45 minutes away from my home town... He'll remember me as "Ricks Buddy"

One year I'm gonna make it to Goderich... It's gotta be better than the Windsor Celtic Festival...

(Big Mick. Sorry you can't make this year's festival! Next year the dates will be August 10, 11, 12, 2001, with the Celtic College starting on the 6th. The following year the dates will be August 9, 10, 11, 2002, with the Celtic College starting on the 5th.)

Other music acts this year include Ad Vielle Qui Pourra, Alastair Brown, Maggie Christl, Clachan, Aoife Clancy, Carreg Lafar, Paperboys, Pulse, Pierre Schryer Band, the ones mentioned in a previous posting and some others.

I quote from the brochure, "Bask in over 25 hours of main stage music, four workshop areas and a daylong participatory dance stage. Stroll among the exquisite craft art and enjoy the beauty of our heavily treed park overlooking Lake Huron. Take time to visit our town, winners of the National Communities In Bloom contest."

The brochure also says "Rain or Shine. Guide dogs only please." We have had some rain previous years, but none that would kill the event. Besides, festival goers usually know to be prepared. The rain we've had this year has left the park's grass and trees in beautiful shape. There's lots to do around the area too, contact Tourism Goderich at tourism@town.goderich.on.ca or 1-800-280-7637 for other activities and sights.

Website: www.celticfestival.on.ca

Peace, Mooh.

CORRECTION!

Ad Vielle Qui Pourra and Clachan will not be performing.

Mont Corbier will be performing.

Also local favourites Homespun, Finola McGinty, and Marianne Hogan, (who have all played most years) will be combined and known this year as "Kerrykeel". Their combined sound is much like the former Homespun but with added vocals.

Peace, Mooh.

The news is that the Celtic College attendance will be a bit higher this year due to mostly word-of-mouth interest. There will some sort of ceileigh tomorrow evening to help kick things off.

Also of interest is the absence of the (quite fabulous) Glenelg Full Moon Dance Band from th festival. They normally play the called dance on the last evening of the festival but, for the first time, they will be absent. Instead, there will be a called dance with an as-yet-to-be-named group of musicians. Very popular and well attended it is.

As always. Mooh.

Update...The Celtic College is going along very well. The evening "mini-concert" yesterday was standing room only for Maggie Christl and the Loretto Reid Band. Set up at the festival site is well underway. The instrument repair shop at the College was very busy when I looked in this afternoon. Weather for the week-end is forecast as seasonal. Mooh.

Regarding after hours jams at local pubs... My husband and I will be arriving sometime Friday. We have our motel reserved. I would love to know exactly what pubs in the area could we expect to hear jamming going on? We are totally unfamiliar with the town and would hate to miss out on being in the right place at the right time.

Is there jamming going on, on the festival grounds?

I went to the festival a couple of years back. A place called "The Livery" was where the organised sessions took place; also other programs. Does anyone know if Eileen McGann will be there again?

Dulcimer42...

I'll be at instrument security at the festival, find me and I'll fill you in (I normally go by the name Mike Crocker).

The Livery is on South Street behind the Bedford Hotel. On Friday I don't think the Livery will be the place (but it won't hurt to look), but check the Bedford/Joe Friday's at the corner of South and the Square. Also check the Park House Hotel which is next to the festival site on West Street before the harbour hill. Tonight, Thursday, the Livery will have its session I believe. When in doubt, ask.

Last night was the Pierre Schryer Band, and others, in a stellar performance before the general sessions began. All week there's been 3 distinct jams within a hundred yards of one another after the Celtic College mini-concerts.

Wish you were here!

Mooh.

Woo Hoo! It's Friday. The Festival starts today. I'll be on my way to Goderich in a couple of hours and will be at the site perhaps this afternoon but tonight and the rest of the weekend for sure. I'll wear my Mudcat t-shirt all day Saturday.

Signing off until Monday....

A great festival as usual. (2 smallish complaints - See Festival Woes thread).

Met Mooh and Pastorpest and chatted with Robin Jones who sometimes posts. I forgot to ask if he has a Mudcat persona.
