Subject: song to honor an 80 year old?
From: KT
Date: 25 Jul 00 - 06:50 PM

A friend is helping to plan a birthday celebration for a man who will be turning 80. Any ideas for a song to honor him or anyone else who's reached a ripe old age? (aside from Happy Birthday, of course.) Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

Re-wite the lyrics to "You're a Grand Old Flag" to read You're a Grand Old Guy. "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow", of course. Ummmmm, maybe, "Please Dont' Talk About Me When I'm Gone"?

There was a recent thread on songs about being old here

It may be of more help than the average catspaw post

Get Up and Go by Pete Seeger is a great one for a senior with a sense of humor. It should be in the database, if not let me know and I'll post lyrics.

Áine wrote a great song earlier this year about an old man whose scrapbook got blown away in a Texas tornado - I reckon it'd be spot, because it's got the whole 20th century in a few verses. But I couldn't find it in the Mudcat Songbook, or in a thread.

To the tune of "Silver Threads Among the Gold":

Darling, you are growing older
Rocks don't get as old as you!
YOu're not quite as old as God is
But you're older than primordial stew!

Yes, my darling, you will be, will be
Older than the rocks and trees
Oh, my darling, you will be--eeeee
Older than the rocks and trees!

Substitute the real name for "darling" if the rhythm will allow it.

Clearly not to be sung to EVERY octogenarian, but if you can predict that it will work with this one, go to it!

Dave: You have good taste! Those lyrics look vaguely familiar! KT, Galway Bay might be a good one or a montage of Songs from the Big Band era. Your octogenarian would have been borne in 1920 and been dating and as the times showed, going to war to the likes of Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller and Artie Shaw. Or you might pick a song from each decade of his life that means something to him. Hope this helps, Kindest Reguards, Neil

Personally, at that age- and sooner- I'd like recognition of the fact that my inner essence doesn't age. My parts may be falling off one by one or showing bad wear and tear but that ain't me! KT, how about writing a song for him from that perspective?

Ebbie, at my "advanced" age (49) I have finally realized that inside every aging body is the 20(sic)yr old we all remember. In the mind, no one is ever "old", even though we all know our chronological age. It was only a year or so ago that I realized I should never try cartwheels/round-offs/flips. But tonight, I did do a pike sit on a trampoline, to show the daughter just how to move your arms. I will probably be sorry tomorrow........

I'd imagine just about anything by Gershwin, Porter, Berlin would probably be recognized and appreciated. Rogers, Hart and Hammerstein too. My Mom died about three years back, aged 82. She and I listened to an awful lot of Broadway Musicals.

Oklahoma! had some good songs. Did you think of that sort of thing?

"Birthday Cake," by Tina Liza Jones. It's a great song about birthdays and friends. You can find it on page 222 of Rise Up Singing (First Edition)

Starts out, "There gonna let second grade out early today, which made little Mikie kinda blue." Ends with "Now it's old man Michael in his rocking chair, enjoying the view."

Chrous: "It makes me think of the good old days, Happy Birthday to you. You sure grew out of your baby ways, Happy Birthday to you. Today's your 90th birthday, we wish you many more. Health and Wealth and friends by the score. So cut the cake and let's eat some more. Happy Birthday to you. Great song for all ages! Jim

WOW!! Thanks for all the great ideas, everyone!! I will pass them on, and have to learn a few of 'em myself. I have the good fortune to be able to sing to lots of folks who are hovering around this age on a regular basis.....and as you say, Sailor Dan, watchin' those eyes light up real bright is a joy!!!!! Come to think of it, if I don't get away from this keyboard, I'll be late!!! I'll sing a few for all of you mudcatters today!!! Thanks again, all!!! KT

Couldn't find them on DT, but you might like "Bring Flowers" by Melvina Reynolds (it advises praising people while they're still alive to enjoy it), and "Take Your Time", sung by Faith Petric, about love (and "winding the clock") through a long, happy marriage.

I can't remember the name of the probably most requested song on Hearme. But it goes "Blah, Blah, Blah..." Somebody help me here. "Old...? If your birthday boy has a sense of humor about growing old, this may be perfect.

Subject: Lyr Add: I'M STILL STANDING (Elton John)
From: Tiger
Date: 26 Jul 00 - 10:08 PM

How can you resist this one?

I'm Still Standing-Elton John

You could never know what it's like.
Your blood like winter freezes just like ice,
And there's a cold lonely light that shines from you.
You'll wind up like the wreck you hide behind that mask you use.

And did you think this fool could never win?
Well look at me, I'm coming back again.
I got a taste of love in a simple way,
And if you need to know while I'm still standing you just fade away.

Don't you know I'm still standing better than I ever did,
Looking like a true survivor, feeling like a little kid?
I'm still standing after all this time,
Picking up the pieces of my life without you on my mind.

I'm still standing, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I'm still standing, yeah, yeah, yeah,

Once I never could hope to win.
You starting down the road leaving me again.
The threats you made were meant to cut me down,
And if our love was just a circus you'd be a clown by now.

87? LL, my Dad is 87. Met a lady on the internet and moved to Florida to live with her a few months ago. Keeps mumbling about the Old Bull and the Young Bull. If this is Dad, Hi! If not, I can recommend a Personals Site.
