Subject: song to honor an 80 year old? From: KT Date: 25 Jul 00 - 06:50 PM A friend is helping to plan a birthday celebration for a man who will be turning 80. Any ideas for a song to honor him or anyone else who's reached a ripe old age? (aside from Happy Birthday, of course.) Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

Subject: RE: Help: song to honor an 80 year old? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 25 Jul 00 - 08:45 PM Áine wrote a great song earlier this year about an old man whose scrapbook got blown away in a Texas tornado - I reckon it'd be spot, because it's got the whole 20th century in a few verses. But I couldn't find it in the Mudcat Songbook, or in a thread.

Subject: RE: Help: song to honor an 80 year old? From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 25 Jul 00 - 09:01 PM To the tune of "Silver Threads Among the Gold": Darling, you are growing older Rocks don't get as old as you! YOu're not quite as old as God is But you're older than primordial stew! Yes, my darling, you will be, will be Older than the rocks and trees Oh, my darling, you will be--eeeee Older than the rocks and trees!
Substitute the real name for "darling" if the rhythm will allow it. |
Subject: RE: Help: song to honor an 80 year old? From: Irish sergeant Date: 25 Jul 00 - 09:57 PM Dave: You have good taste! Those lyrics look vaguely familiar! KT, Galway Bay might be a good one or a montage of Songs from the Big Band era. Your octogenarian would have been borne in 1920 and been dating and as the times showed, going to war to the likes of Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller and Artie Shaw. Or you might pick a song from each decade of his life that means something to him. Hope this helps, Kindest Reguards, Neil |

Subject: RE: Help: song to honor an 80 year old? From: Ebbie Date: 25 Jul 00 - 10:42 PM Personally, at that age- and sooner- I'd like recognition of the fact that my inner essence doesn't age. My parts may be falling off one by one or showing bad wear and tear but that ain't me! KT, how about writing a song for him from that perspective? Ebbie |
Subject: RE: Help: song to honor an 80 year old? From: Mbo Date: 25 Jul 00 - 10:45 PM How about "I Don't Need Your Rockin' Chair" by George Jones. --Matt |
Subject: RE: Help: song to honor an 80 year old? From: Sorcha Date: 25 Jul 00 - 11:01 PM Ebbie, at my "advanced" age (49) I have finally realized that inside every aging body is the 20(sic)yr old we all remember. In the mind, no one is ever "old", even though we all know our chronological age. It was only a year or so ago that I realized I should never try cartwheels/round-offs/flips. But tonight, I did do a pike sit on a trampoline, to show the daughter just how to move your arms. I will probably be sorry tomorrow........ |

Subject: RE: Help: song to honor an 80 year old? From: GUEST,CBJames Date: 26 Jul 00 - 12:02 AM I'd imagine just about anything by Gershwin, Porter, Berlin would probably be recognized and appreciated. Rogers, Hart and Hammerstein too. My Mom died about three years back, aged 82. She and I listened to an awful lot of Broadway Musicals. Oklahoma! had some good songs. Did you think of that sort of thing? |

From: Hollowfox Date: 26 Jul 00 - 04:34 PM Couldn't find them on DT, but you might like "Bring Flowers" by Melvina Reynolds (it advises praising people while they're still alive to enjoy it), and "Take Your Time", sung by Faith Petric, about love (and "winding the clock") through a long, happy marriage. |
