From: katlaughing

It is the Twilight Hour

It is the twilight hour, Leonora, Leonora
It is the twilight hour, Leonora, Leonora
Along the western sky
The clouds of sunset lie
And I hear the pine grove sigh, Leonora, Leonora
I hear the pine grove sigh, Leonora, Leonora.

It is the twilight hour, Leonora, Leonora
It is the twilight hour, Leonora, Leonora
The purple eve is come, Leonora;
The last blush of the day
From the lake has fled away,
And the mountain tops are grey, Leonora.

It is the twilight hour, Leonora, Leonora
It is the twilight hour, Leonora, Leonora
O leave thy household task, Leonora;
Come, where the woodbine twines
Her odor,-breathing (sic) vines,
The star of evening shines, Leonora.

It is the twilight hour, Leonora, Leonora
It is the twilight hour, Leonora, Leonora
The song,-birds (sic) are all mute, Leonora;
But dearer far to me
Than note of bird can be,
Is a song of love from thee, Leonora.

From an 1854 edition of the "Christian Parlour Book: devoted to Science, Literature and Religion", published by James H. Pratt & Co. No.116 Nassau Street, NY.

I will get a midi done and sent in a few days. There are several more songs in this book. I will enter the lyrics as I have time, then the midis.

Sorry, forgot to add the music was written by Asahel Abbot. It does not give an author for the lyrics, just says "words selected."

Subject: Lyr Add: TEMPERANCE HYMN
From: katlaughing
Date: 29 Jul 00 - 11:22 PM

Okay, Joe, if I understood you correctly, you want all the lyrics from this book, in this thread, right? Okay, here is another, although it has no tune listed in the book. (I'll bet my grandma sang this one...she was a proud member of the Christian Women's Temperance Union.)Also, I didn't find anything like it in the DT, so here it is:

The following hymn appeared first in the Parish Hymns, a collection which has come into extensive use in Presbyterian and Congregational churches, for evening meetings:

Temperance Hymn

Mourn for the thousands slain --
The youthful and the strong;
Mourn for the wine-cup's fatal reign,
And the deluded throng.

Mourn for the tarnished gem --
For Reason's light divine
Quenched from the soul's bright diadem,
Where God had bid it shine.

Mourn for the ruined soul --
Eternal life and light,
Lost by the fiery, maddening bowl,
And turned to hopeless night.

Mourn for the lost -- but pray,
Pray to our God above,
To break the fell destroyer's sway,
And show His saving love.

Thanks, Alan! That was fast! The phrasing on this song is kind of tricky. If anyone is interested, I do have it in Noteworthy Composer, with the first verse, and would be happy to email the file.

Thanks, again,

kat

Subject: Lyr Add: IT IS THE TWILIGHT HOUR (Epes Sargent)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 09 Dec 10 - 07:53 AM

This was printed as a poem, not a song, in Godey's Lady's Book, Volume 24 (Philadelphia: Louis A. Godey, January, 1842), page 23:

IT IS THE TWILIGHT HOUR
By Epes Sargent.

It is the twilight hour,
    Leonore!
Along the western sky,
The clouds of sunset lie,
And I hear the pine-grove sigh,
    Leonore!

The purple eve is come,
    Leonore!
The last blush of the day
From the lake has fled away,
And the mountain-tops are gray,
    Leonore!

Oh! leave thy household task,
    Leonore!
Come where the woodbine twines
Its odour-breathing vines;
The star of evening shines,
    Leonore!

The song-birds are all mute,
    Leonore!
But dearer far to me,
Than note of bird can be,
Is a song of love from thee,
    Leonore!
