Subject: RE: HTML Practice idiot at work From: Banjer Date: 17 Sep 00 - 07:31 AM It was my understanding that we did not need to use qoutation marks when making links. I have not used them and have had no trouble without them. Joe Offer told me that and, by golly, it worked.
In most cases, you will get away without the use of quotes but it is not standard HTML. Joe now "conforms" and does include the quotes in his examples in the FAQ.

Subject: RE: HTML Practice idiot at work From: CarolC Date: 17 Sep 00 - 07:33 AM Banjer, how did you know I used quotation marks? Are you an elf also? |
Subject: RE: HTML Practice idiot at work From: Jon Freeman Date: 17 Sep 00 - 08:00 AM Carol, anyone can tell that you used quotation marks. If you go to View/ Source (or View/ Page Source in Netscape) you will be able to see all the HTML in this page including your posts. Jon |
Subject: RE: HTML Practice idiot at work From: Banjer Date: 17 Sep 00 - 08:23 AM What Jon says is very true, I however, am an elf! (and besides that the Joe Clone said you missed a qoutation mark) |

Subject: RE: HTML Practice idiot at work From: CarolC Date: 17 Sep 00 - 09:44 PM YES! and YES AGAIN, I SAY! I don't have netscape. I only have AOL which doesn't allow me very much flexibility. I guess I won't be able to view html code. (Unless someone knows how to do this with AOL.) |
Subject: RE: HTML Practice idiot at work From: Jon Freeman Date: 18 Sep 00 - 10:16 AM Carol, does AOL tie you to their own software? Jon |
Subject: RE: HTML Practice idiot at work From: CarolC Date: 18 Sep 00 - 06:42 PM Jon, I'm a bit of a computer dummy, and I'm not sure what your question means. I had to download something into my system from a disk in order to have AOL, but I'm a bit lost as far as what it can do, and how to do it. Carol |
Subject: RE: HTML Practice idiot at work From: Bill D Date: 18 Sep 00 - 10:08 PM I am just looking at this thread in AOL..(which I have had for my son..this is maybe the 3rd time I've used it...It seems you can do VERY little in AOL's window...you have to highlight even a URL in order copy it, and there seems to be NO 'view source'..or font selection, or 'preferences'...etc.......It is truly minimalist..(I guess lots of AOLers don't want to be confused... but you CAN get Netscape to work thru AOL...I just forget how... AOL..the automatic transmission of the WWW...no, the trolly line of the WWW, since it wants to start & stop and run the routes IT wants... |
Subject: RE: HTML Practice idiot at work From: Jon Freeman Date: 18 Sep 00 - 10:47 PM Carol, in layman's terms, I reckon that means you should try to get Netscape working. Maybe Bill will be able to help you on that. Jon |
Subject: RE: HTML Practice idiot at work From: CarolC Date: 19 Sep 00 - 12:23 AM Thanks, Jon. Bill D, if you ever do remember how to get Netscape to work through AOL, I would love to know how. Hoping, of course, that doing so wouldn't crash my computer. It's a wee, delicate thing. Carol |

Subject: RE: HTML Practice idiot at work From: Pene Azul Date: 07 Oct 00 - 04:32 PM Roger, you want _blank there instead of -blank. It's really best not to do that on the Mudcat, though, except in practice threads. Jeff |

Subject: RE: HTML Practice idiot at work From: MudGuard Date: 07 Oct 00 - 06:40 PM Roger, your 4:17 attempt: <h ref instead of <a href blank befor target missing -blank should be _blank only a blank in the anchor no closing for anchor (</a>) your 4:21 attempt #1: first error repaired your 4:21 attempt #2: no change to previous one your 4:23 attempt: first, fourth and fifth error repaired, but quote at end of url missing your 4:26 attempt: second and third error still appear your 4:35 attempt: same errors still appear: <A HREF="http://www.lynda.com/hexv.html"TARGET="-blank">colour chart</a> should be <A HREF="http://www.lynda.com/hexv.html" TARGET="_blank">colour chart</a> There is a difference between targetnames _blank and -blank. _blank is a reserved name which always opens a new window. -blank would open a new window if no window of this name is open already. If you click two links with a target _blank, you have three windows (the one with the links and the two new ones). If you click two links with a target -blank, you have two windows (the one with the links, and one where first the page of the first link is opened, and after that the page of the second link is opened in that same window).
